KLM gives sick children an unforgettable day

Saturday March 7, KLM welcomed 60 sick and disabled children and their companions for a special and festive day in collaboration with the Hoogvliegers Foundation. The highlight of the program was a special sightseeing flight over the Netherlands in an Embraer 195-E2, one of the newest and most fuel-efficient aircraft in the KLM fleet, operated by KLM Cityhopper.
 

A day without worries
The children were given a festive welcome at Schiphol Airport at 11:30 a.m. by dozens of KLM employees who volunteered their time to make this day possible. After the reception, the children went through customs to gate B35, where they were introduced to KLM pilots and cabin attendants and the ambassadors of the Hoogvliegers Foundation, including astronaut André Kuipers and radio DJs Coen Swijnenberg and Wouter van der Goes.
At 2 p.m., the special flight took off over the Netherlands, flying over Zeeland and the Efteling theme park, among other places. On board, a team of KLM employees and medical staff were on hand to ensure everyone had a safe and special experience. After returning, the children had the opportunity to take a look in the cockpit and ask the pilots, flight attendants, Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, and Customs officers all their questions.

It's very special for us to help these children forget their illness for a while and let them experience what it's like to be part of our crew for a day!”

Structural involvement with vulnerable children
KLM has been committed to the welfare of vulnerable children for more than 25 years. In addition to the Hoogvliegers Foundation, the airline also works with Wings of Support and Make-A-Wish, among others. Many KLM employees volunteer their time to these initiatives. Passengers can also donate miles through Flying Blue to charities that focus on children in vulnerable situations.

About the Hoogvliegers Foundation
The Hoogvliegers Foundation allows children aged 6 to 17 who are ill or have a disability to be a ‘pilot’ for a day. The organization arranges flights from various airports in the Netherlands every year. Since its inception, more than 14,000 children have been able to enjoy this experience. KLM has been working closely with the foundation since 2008.
