KLM and UNICEF Join Hands for Children's Rights

Summary

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and UNICEF Netherlands have signed a three-year partnership to raise awareness for children’s rights in air transport and to bring improvements where possible.

By joining hands with UNICEF Netherlands, we can take things a step further. Not only for KLM, but for the entire air transport sector. I am proud that KLM can also play a pioneering role in this regard, teaming up with UNICEF Netherlands to work on achieving children’s rights and using this as a basis to develop principles for the air transport industry.
Camiel Eurlings, KLM President & CEO
UNICEF Netherlands is delighted that KLM is willing to champion children’s rights in the air transport industry. This not only extends to child labour and child sex tourism, but also includes ‘child-friendly’ labour conditions for parents, marketing that respects children, and campaigns inspiring staff to support children. KLM could also contribute in the event of humanitarian disasters. For instance, by bringing relief goods to children in disaster-stricken areas.
Jan Bouke Wijbrandi, director of UNICEF Netherlands

In 2012, UNICEF co-signed ten guiding principles regarding corporations and children. These Children’s Rights & Business Principles, originating from the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights, will serve as a guideline for KLM. The airline will strive to ensure that all of its processes and activities, as well as those of its partners and suppliers, uphold and support children’s rights. The next step will be to ensure that these principles are further disseminated in the air transport industry. The aim is to assist companies in adopting measures in the workplace, market and broader society that will help to uphold and support children’s rights. KLM is the first airline to fully embrace and implement these Children’s Rights & Business Principles.

This unique global partnership with UNICEF, the children’s organisation of the United Nations, is closely allied with KLM’s ambition to contribute to a better society. This is also reflected by the KLM AirCares programme that has contributed to numerous educational and environmental projects in recent years.

The efforts of AIR FRANCE KLM have been acknowledged by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, which has ranked the airline as sector leader for nine consecutive years, acknowledging its programme to protect the environment and improve social conditions.

Over KLM
