Cabin crew union VNC sign CLA with KLM Cityhopper

The members of the cabin crew union VNC have voted to agree in principle with the proposed new collective labour agreement (CLA) for KLC cabin personnel. KLM Cityhopper is delighted that we can now start work with the VNC to implement this CLA.

FNV Cabin Crew has notified KLM that 56% of its membership base voted against the agreement in principle.

Previously, the biggest trade union, VNC, which represents more than 70% of all cabin crew, did vote in favour of the new collective labour agreement. A limited majority of FNV Cabin Crew’s membership base, which represents around 15% of all cabin crew, has now voted against the agreement. FNV Cabin Crew has informed KLM that it will now discuss the outcome. KLM will do the same. KLM nonetheless hopes that FNV Cabin Crew will sign the collective labour agreement, thus concluding a particularly difficult period.

VNC union and KLM agree on cabin crew labour contract

Yesterday, the members’ council of the VNC trade union for cabin crew ratified the agreement in principle of a new collective labour agreement (CLA) for KLM cabin crew, which will remain in effect until June 2019. Owing to adjusted working procedures and more efficient division of labour on board, the crew complement on intercontinental flights can be reduced by one. (This is explicitly different from the “minus-1 CA” measure referred to by the FNV trade union.) The new agreement, supplementing the earlier productivity improvement of 2015 CLA for cabin crew, will ensure that cabin crew contribute to Perform 2020 objectives just as their colleagues on the ground and in the cockpit have already done.

The agreement provides a firm foundation on which we can join hands in building a healthy future for KLM, which is good for staff as well as passengers.

We hope that FNV members will also embrace the plan, considering that the new agreement with the VNC has close similarities to the demands previously expressed by the FNV Cabine trade union.

KLM cabin crew strike called off

KLM is pleased that FNV Cabin Crew has decided to suspend the intended industrial action on Monday, 8 January and to present the agreement in principle reached last Friday with the VNC trade union for cabin crew to its membership base.Flight operations on Monday will be carried out in line with the regular schedule, which is good news for our KLM customers.

In KLM's opinion, the proposal is balanced, offering advantages for everyone while at the same time requiring everyone to contribute. KLM expects this to conclude the long period of uncertainty for its cabin crew members and for KLM.

KLM and the VNC have reached an agreement in principle

KLM is pleased to have reached an agreememt in priciple with the largest Cabin trade union the VNC on the details of the new collective labour agreement (CLA). Together, KLM and the VNC worked hard to arrive at a balanced package. The VNC will now present the agreement in principle with a positive advise to its council of members. Around 70% of KLM cabin crew are members of the VNC.

KLM has also shared the results of negotiations with the FNV Cabine trade union for cabin crew. KLM has urged FNV Cabine to call off the strike scheduled for coming Monday, allowing them to share the negotiated agreements with its members, so that FNV Cabine and the VNC can jointly formalise a collective labour agreement with KLM.

KLM's response to VNC's call for work stoppage

KLM finds the VNC cabin crew union’s call for a work stoppage this coming Friday both incomprehensible and unwise. KLM has urged VNC to call off the intended industrial actions. The Membership Council of the VNC is contesting a final proposal containing a structural wage increase for the first time in many years, more prospects for cabin crew, measures intended to relieve work pressure and a greatly improved profit-sharing scheme. VNC has submitted the proposal to its Membership Council. The FNV cabin crew union has decided to put the proposal before its membership base for consideration. The outcome in this case is expected at the beginning of next week. KLM urges VNC to call off the intended industrial actions in the interests of our customers and also because of the huge operational challenges facing KLM due to weather conditions these days.

In relation to the anticipated work stoppage, KLM is doing everything possible to minimise potential disruptions for customers and staff. It is not yet clear whether there is broad-based support for the actions, but it is possible that they will result in delays. KLM recommends that its customers keep a close eye on the flight information on the KLM website.

Cabin crew unions VNC and FNV suspend work stoppages

The cabin crew unions VNC and FNV have informed KLM that they will suspend the work stoppages announced for today. This means KLM will operate its regular schedule today, with the exception of the three flights that were cancelled as a precaution yesterday.

The two unions took this decision based on negotiations that took place during the past 24 hours, resulting in a new integral proposal from KLM addressing pension schemes, the “minus-1 CA” measure, and the resumption of labour contract negotiations.

KLM welcomes the VNC’s decision to suspend protest action and return to the negotiating table. FNV will consider KLM’s proposal and has suspended protest action pending its conclusion.

KLM takes measures to restrict delays

KLM wants to minimise inconvenience to passengers ensuing from the 60-minute work stoppages announced by the FNV and VNC cabin crew unions. KLM therefore today decided to cancel three flights scheduled to take place on Saturday: KL0687 to Mexico, KL1835 to Berlin, and KL1011 to London. The passengers in question have been informed and rebooked to other flights. This will enable KLM to accommodate the anticipated delays in the best possible way.

KLM also expects that it can keep delays to a minimum by adjusting various procedures, such as boarding.

However, the financial impact will be substantial, amounting to an estimated EUR 6-7 million on Saturday alone.

Consultation

KLM remains open to consultation and will continue to explore available options to resume negotiations. It is important to find a way out of this situation, to prevent further damage to our company and inconvenience to our passengers.
