From 31 March 2019, KLM will begin operating flights between Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Boston on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The Airbus A330-300 flights will have 30 seats in World Business Class, 40 seats in Economy Comfort Class and 222 seats in Economy Class. From 1 July 2019, a fourth weekly flight will be operated on Mondays. The departure and arrival times are as follows:

• KL0617 departs from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol at 17.00 CET, arriving in Boston at 18.30 local time.

• KL0618 departs from Boston at 22.00 local time, arriving at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol the following day at 10.35 CET.

Boston lies 300 kilometres north of New York and is the largest city in the state of Massachusetts. Renowned as the home of Harvard University, Boston is one of the oldest and richest cities in the United States with an economy that revolves around financial services, insurance, education, and high-tech manufacturing and research. The city’s Museum of Fine Arts opened in 1876 and now boasts no fewer than 450,000 works of art, making it one of the world’s most comprehensive museums.

The order sought to temporarily ban the entry of nationals from 6 countries (Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen) into the USA. The Supreme Court’s decision imposes this restriction of access on anyone who “does not have a sufficient connection to a person or entity in the USA”.

This decision will enter into force on Thursday 29th June (10:30 EST). It has been decided that access restrictions will be determined on a case-by-case basis by the US administration, in line with visa requests made by the travelers concerned. 

• Provided that nationals of the countries concerned have obtained the necessary travel documents, they’ll be authorized to travel to the USA.
• The provisions currently in force (Secure Flight, ESTA) for flights to the USA, have not been modified in any way. There is therefore no reason to make any changes to commercial and operational procedures at this stage.
• We anticipate little if any impact on the aviation industry. Airlines should do as they always do – ensure that travelers from these 6 countries are properly documented for entry into the United States. If the travelers are properly documented, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will process them at U.S. ports of entry. The Department of State will process requests for visas from travelers of the six countries on a case-by-case basis.

Like all other airlines, KLM has to comply with the entrance requirements that countries set for travellers. Airlines are not permitted to carry passengers who do not meet those entrance requirements. In this, KLM complies with the aviation authorities’ international agreements.

KLM regrets the inconvenience caused to its passengers who were confronted with this sudden change of circumstances. Although the fact that these passengers were unable to fly to the USA lies entirely outside KLM’s sphere of influence, we decided to offer these passengers a voucher equivalent in value to the flight they were unable to take to the USA. KLM thereby hopes to alleviate to some degree the inconvenience caused by the decision taken by the American authorities.

KLM now informs affected passengers prior to departure. Passengers who were already on their way to Schiphol have been offered a free flight back to where they departed from. No KLM passenger has got stuck anywhere.
