This makes KLM and Transavia the first airlines in the world to share data on unruly passengers. The two airlines are also calling on politicians and policymakers in the Netherlands and abroad to make it possible to share such data with other airlines.

Extending a Transavia ban to KLM and vice versa widens the scope of the no-fly measure. It means that passengers on KLM or Transavia flights who are placed on the No Fly List are less likely to jeopardise flight safety on flights operated by the other airlines. The aim is to improve flight safety, with the mutual ban also serving as a deterrent.

Rise in complaints about unacceptable behaviour
Unacceptable behaviour during flights is a growing problem. The number of complaints about unruly passengers increased during the pandemic. KLM currently records an average of five complaints leading to a ban every month, while Transavia bans at least one passenger a month. Although the number of complaints declined after the corona pandemic, airlines are seeing another surge. Unruly behaviour at high altitudes can have a major impact on passengers and crew.

Complex regulations
KLM and Transavia have examined in-depth how they can best share No Fly Lists with each other. It took a long time because, although the two airlines are members of the same group, they found themselves dealing with complex and sometimes confusing regulations. Even so, they have managed to align their policies and processes so that they can share banned-passenger data while respecting existing privacy rules. The new measure is only the first step towards sharing No Fly List data. The challenge now is to take this a step further in the Netherlands and, perhaps, across Europe.

Calling on politicians and authorities
The growing number of incidents combined with their severity and impact have prompted Transavia and KLM to explore whether airlines can share more data among themselves to promote flight safety. They have begun by calling on politicians and authorities to create more legal and other options for airlines to share No Fly List data, at least within national borders.

In time, such efforts should focus on developing a set of international rules and on harmonisation. After all, the issue of unacceptable passenger behaviour transcends airlines and national borders and is critical to improving safety in the air. Unfortunately, legislation is lacking in many countries or the regulations are so fragmented that it is impossible to share data in a manner that promotes flight safety.

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

In addition, KLM will offer its customers the option of purchasing an extra amount of sustainable fuel. In this manner, KLM aims to stimulate the market for SAF. The face of travel is set to change in the future and SAF will play an essential role in this regard. In addition to fleet renewal and further innovation within the company and sector, KLM is committed to bringing about an energy transition.

Thanks to our customers who participate in the Corporate and Cargo SAF Programme, KLM already has a relatively substantial share of the global SAF market today. Yet with a share of 0.18% in 2019, it is still less than 1% of our total fuel consumption. We realize that the 0.5% standard admixture on passenger tickets is a very small step, but an important one in the right direction and we hope other airlines will follow soon. We will have to work with all parties around us and come up with rock-solid solutions and innovations to further open the market for SAF.

Reduce of CO2 emissions by at least 75%
The CO2 emissions of SAF that KLM currently purchases are at least 75% lower than those of fossil kerosene. That is why, in the short term, SAF is the most important means of drastically reducing CO2 emissions, thus contributing to making aviation more sustainable. The costs for the sustainable fuel variant are at least four times higher and production is lagging behind. By increasing demand, KLM hopes to further develop the market for SAF so that supply is scaled up and sustainable fuel ultimately becomes cheaper.

SAF ambitions
Effective 1 January 2022, France will introduce a compulsory SAF admixture percentage. This is not yet compulsory in the Netherlands. Within Europe, there is a proposal to achieve a compulsory SAF proportion of 2% by 2025 for all flights within and from Europe. KLM and its partners in the Clean Skies for Tomorrow coalition previously announced that it is their ambition to achieve a worldwide SAF proportion of 10% in 2030. To this end, KLM has now decided to start adding more SAF voluntarily.
In addition, Air France-KLM, KLM and Air France have committed themselves to the CO2 reduction trajectory drawn up for the aviation sector by the Science Based Targets initiative. This will ensure that KLM’s objectives are in line with the targets of the UN Climate Agreement signed in Paris (net zero in 2050). Increased utilisation of SAF is a key factor in achieving these targets.

Standard admixture added to ticket price
The 0.5% SAF proportion will supplement the SAF that is already being blended for customers who have joined KLM’s Corporate and Cargo SAF programmes. A surcharge for the additional SAF will be added to the ticket price. This means KLM passengers will automatically contribute to the purchase of sustainable fuel. The surcharge will vary from 1 to 12 euros per ticket, depending on the distance flown and the seat booked (economy or business).
KLM will use this contribution to finance a standard 0.5% SAF admixture on all flights from Amsterdam.

CO2ZERO service expanded with SAF option
For individual passengers who wish to further reduce the footprint of their flight, we have expanded our CO2ZERO service with an option to purchase an additional quantity of SAF. This option will be available in addition to our existing compensation alternative to support a reforestation project with Gold Standard certification. Reforestation is a way in which CO2 emissions can be compensated outside the aviation industry. With the additional purchase of SAF, a passenger contributes to less use of fossil kerosene, and thus to a direct reduction of CO2 emissions as a result of flying. Again, KLM will use the entire amount raised to purchase SAF to boost global SAF production.

Purchase of SAF
In 2011, KLM conducted the world’s first commercial flight on blended biofuel. In February 2021 we operated a commercial flight with an admixture of sustainable synthetic fuel. For SAF, KLM focuses on all technologies side by side: based on used cooking oil, forestry residues and sustainable synthetic fuel. KLM is currently purchasing relatively large volumes of SAF and has signed various purchase agreements with suppliers. This will guarantee the standard 0.5% admixture for flights departing from Amsterdam and will enable KLM to meet additional demand generated by passengers via the CO2ZERO programme, as well as demand generated by partners in KLM’s Corporate SAF Programme and the Air France-KLM-Martinair Cargo SAF Programme, thereby contributing to KLM’s efforts to achieve its CO2 reduction targets.

SAF,sustainabile aviation fuel,klm,Transavia

So this step too. We are extremely grateful to Mattijs for the important contribution he has made to our company over the past six years."

Pieter Elbers, president and CEO of KLM, former Supervisory Board member of Transavia: "We regret that Mattijs is leaving the KLM Group. Under the leadership of Mattijs, Transavia has in recent years developed strongly into a financially sound company with an important role and deepened cooperation with the KLM Group. Of course we respect his choice and wish Mattijs success."

So far this was an internal AF/KL governance and structure dialogue which ‎became public by the publication in La Tribune on November 4th and thereafter De Telegraaf November 5th.

</pp:summary>

The further development of Transavia in the Low Cost segment is one of the pillars in the AF/KL strategy Perform2020. The ambition is to develop the activities under Transavia brand, both from the Netherlands, France and other European countries, improving efficiencies and creating new opportunities in the low cost European market.

When Transavia France (TO) was founded in 2007, the shareholder structure was one of 40% Transavia Netherlands (HV) and 60% Air France.‎ This enabled Transavia France (TO) to make a successful and smooth start and capitalize on the existing platform of Transavia Netherlands within the AF/KL Group. As to simplify and further streamline the shareholder structure the rearrangement of the 40% shares in TO by HV within the AF/KL Group has been proposed. The necessary steps and approvals within the various corporate bodies for this have almost been completed after which it can be executed.

A possible next step, currently under review, is a further minority rearrangement of the HV shares in the AF/KL Group (KLM holds at present 100% of the HV shares). For this ‎possible next step, the various checks and evaluations are being made at present. ‎Also consultation with the various stakeholders is yet to be done.‎ These evaluations and consultations will be properly done first in the coming months.

Transavia,shareholder,airfrance,klm,news
