This milestone brings large-scale SAF production in the Netherlands a step closer and marks a significant advance in accelerating aviation’s sustainability transition. Starting in 2028, the plant will produce 100,000 tons of alternative fuel per year.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p style="margin-left:0px;">KLM has been investing in cleaner, quieter, and more fuel-efficient flight for years. As a co-founder and shareholder of SkyNRG, KLM has played an active role in the development of the SAF market and this project since its inception in 2009, with the Delfzijl facility announced in 2019. We were the first airline in the world to provide a long-term offtake guarantee, which was instrumental in securing the financing and construction of this plant.</p><p style="margin-left:0px;">Alongside fleet renewal, SAF is one of the most effective measures for substantially reducing our CO₂ emissions. And while SAF emits a similar amount of CO₂ during flight as conventional fuel, its overall lifecycle CO₂ impact, from production to combustion, is at least 65% lower than that of kerosene.</p><p style="margin-left:0px;"><strong>Marjan Rintel, CEO KLM</strong><br /><i>“We are proud of our partnership with SkyNRG, where, both as co-founder and investor, we have laid the foundation for the first dedicated SAF factory in the Netherlands. We are committed to purchasing 75,000 tons of SAF per year, which is roughly 2% of our total fuel consumption. With this factory, we are taking a concrete step towards accelerating SAF production in the Netherlands, reinforcing our leading international position in this field.</i></p><p style="margin-left:0px;"><i>Securing the necessary permits and financing for the factory was a lengthy and challenging process. This highlights the need for an active government that invests and collaborates with the sector, so we can collectively achieve the national ambition of reaching 14% SAF blending by 2030.”</i></p><p style="margin-left:0px;"><strong>Maarten van Dijk, CEO SkyNRG</strong><br /><i>“KLM’s partnership has been at the core of this project. What we’re achieving here demonstrates that airlines and industry can jointly take responsibility for making aviation more sustainable. With the start of construction, we are proving that investments in SAF can be realized in Europe.”</i></p><p style="margin-left:0px;">This factory is an important step forward, but more is needed to rapidly scale up SAF production, making it more widely available and affordable. It is therefore encouraging that the new coalition agreement focuses on expanding alternative aviation fuels and stimulating SAF production in the Netherlands. KLM calls on the government to invest together in the acceleration and scaling up of SAF, for example, through a national SAF fund as recommended in the Wennink report ‘The Route to Future Prosperity.’ This project shows it’s possible, but it also underscores the need for more such initiatives to actually achieve the 14% blending target.</p><p style="margin-left:0px;">Market research conducted by Markteffect on behalf of KLM shows broad public support for an active role by the government: 87% of Dutch respondents believe that air travel tax revenue should be used to make flying cleaner. Only by working together can the government and industry truly accelerate aviation’s sustainability transition and ensure sufficient, affordable SAF is available for the entire sector.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[SAF,SkyNRG,sustainability]]></category>

                        <title>KLM wins awards at The Aviation Challenge</title>

This challenge encourages airlines worldwide to conduct their regular operations with as little impact on the environment as possible, while testing innovative solutions that contribute to making aviation more sustainable. Twenty-two airlines participated this year.</strong></p><p>The flight to Nairobi with which KLM participated in The Aviation Challenge achieved the lowest CO₂ emissions ever, at 35g CO₂/RTK. This was achieved by flying entirely on SAF (through the <span>mass balance method)&nbsp;</span>and making a number of operational adjustments. This earned KLM a Special Recognition award. KLM also received a Special Recognition award for sharing knowledge with Kenya Airways.</p><p>In addition, KLM received an award for the Best Showcase Flight with the video Intern On A Mission, for the inspiring image KLM gave of the flight to Rome with an Airbus 321N.</p><p>Finally, KLM Cityhopper (KLC) won the prestigious Pioneer of the Year award for its 100% SAF ticket project, which ran in 2025 on the Amsterdam – London City Airport and Amsterdam – Hamburg routes. KLC temporarily increased the SAF percentage to 100 percent on the two test routes. The additional SAF contribution went entirely towards the purchase of SAF. In this way, KLC investigated passengers' willingness to pay extra for SAF if it is included in the ticket price as standard.</p><p><strong>About The Aviation Challenge</strong></p><p>More than eighty flights were carried out between September 26 and October 26 as part of The Aviation Challenge. During these flights, airlines tested operational improvements and innovative solutions that contribute to reducing CO2 emissions from aviation. Examples include route optimization, innovative maintenance measures, weight savings, and the use of SAF.</p><p>On average, these flights achieved 13.5 percent lower CO2 emissions than the regular operations of the participating airlines and were 12 percent below the sector average.&nbsp;</p><p>KLM recognizes its impact on the environment and climate and understands that there are limits to what our planet can withstand. Action is needed to continue operating within these limits. An additional advantage: the electric catering trucks are significantly quieter than the current trucks. This is pleasant for both the KCS drivers and other employees on the platform.</p><p><strong>Intensive testing</strong><br>KCS has asked two suppliers of airport equipment, DOLL® and Mallaghan, to each develop an electric catering truck, and car company Volvo built the chassis. In the coming period, KCS will extensively test these two prototypes. The performance of the trucks, the impact on the catering process and user-friendliness will be evaluated.                         <title>Intercontinental KLM Flight for The Aviation Challenge to Singapore</title>

This challenge is initiated by SkyTeam and dares airlines to conduct their operations as efficiently and with as little environmental impact as possible. The results of these tests are shared among the participating airlines, with the aim of sharing knowledge and helping the airlines carry out their activities with a lower environmental impact.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>KLM acknowledges its impact on the environment and climate and sees that there are limits to what our planet can handle. Action is needed to operate within these limits. By testing various innovations during flight operations and on board, KLM evaluates their outcomes with the goal of scaling them up and implementing them as standard practices.</p><p><strong>Before the flight</strong><br>Both during preparation and during the flight, KLM tested various initiatives. In terms of cargo transport, KLM hopes to eventually replace all cargo pallets with lightweight cardboard alternatives. This change saves 150kg of material per flight needed for cargo transport. KLM hopes to save nearly 0.05% CO2 (6 kilotons) annually through this measure (Scope 1 and 3). Additionally, as many electric ground processes as possible are used, and the aircraft is towed to the runway, saving 400 kg of fuel. This tests how it works to tow an aircraft further towards the runway in an operational environment so that the engines can start later.</p><p>Optimization of loading weight can also help reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. By distributing the weight on board as optimally as possible, a small lift under the nose is created, resulting in less air resistance and thus a more efficient flight.</p><p>Passengers in World Business Class are asked to pre-order their meals. This helps KLM to take exactly the amount of food needed for the flight on board, reducing food waste. Passengers are also encouraged to pack lightly.</p><p>KLM has also started advising passengers not to print their boarding passes. This has led to an 84% reduction in printed boarding passes since May 2024.</p><p><strong>Onboard initiatives</strong><br>During the flight, lighter tableware is used in World Business Class, a result of the Challenge in 2022. This saves 5 kg per flight, resulting in an annual saving of 150 tons of CO2 emissions for the entire KLM fleet. Additionally, World Business Class passengers receive a lighter 3D-printed KLM house instead of the regular porcelain KLM houses.</p><p>Passengers can also purchase alternative fuel (SAF) onboard the flight, which is normally only available beforehand. The SAF purchased additionally is not on the flight to Singapore but will be used by KLM later. The cabin crew wears a new uniform made from more sustainable fabric from recycled PET and with more stretch, providing more comfort while working on board. The cabin crew also wears the previously implemented KLM sneakers from Filling Pieces.</p><p><strong>The Aviation Challenge</strong><br>The Aviation Challenge is inspired by the historic World’s Greatest Air Race, which ran from London to Melbourne in 1934. The race aimed to make the world more accessible and connect people. Today, the challenges for aviation are no longer in bridging distances but in making operations more sustainable. For instance, the implementation of a new climb procedure, OptiClimb, can save 1% fuel on KLM Cityhopper flights. This procedure advises pilots on the most efficient climb speeds based on weight, weather conditions, aircraft type, and route. This procedure is implemented on all KLM Cityhopper flights next week. Additionally, efforts are made to conduct ground processes at the airport—both at Schiphol and Valencia—using as much electric equipment as possible.&nbsp;<br><br>Onboard, several changes are made, both noticeable and unnoticeable to passengers. Calculations ensure the aircraft is loaded with the minimum possible weight, and food waste is collected separately. Wine is carried in 'Wine Tubes' instead of small bottles, reducing both weight and waste. The trolleys are also updated to separately collect and process all waste. Porcelain is replaced onboard, and the Business Class cup is made from recycled agricultural waste. KLM's inflight magazine, Holland Herald, is available digitally via onboard WiFi. Lastly, the crew received uniforms made from a new, more sustainable fabric and wears the previously introduced KLM sneakers by Filling Pieces.&nbsp;<br><br>As an airline, KLM aims to involve its passengers in the transition as well. Passengers who purchase alternative fuel (SAF) are given priority boarding, right after SkyPriority passengers. Tap water is made more accessible at Schiphol with water points, allowing passengers to fill reusable bottles provided by Dopper, reducing the need for plastic water bottles. Passengers are also encouraged to pack light before the flight.&nbsp;<br><br>The idea for The Aviation Challenge originated from a group of enthusiastic KLM colleagues. They were inspired by the historic London-Melbourne race in 1934, which aimed to connect the world and bring people together. Today's aviation challenges are not about bridging distances but about sustainability.                         <title>First Airbus A321neo joins KLM’s fleet: a milestone in cleaner, quieter, more efficient flight operations</title>

From mid‑September, the A321neo will begin serving several European destinations.</strong></span></p><p><span><strong>New engine option</strong></span><br>The “neo” stands for new engine option: the aircraft are equipped with new engines that emit less CO2 than their predecessors. Measured per passenger tonne kilometre, the A321neo is around 21% more fuel efficient than the Boeing 737 aircraft it replaces. Additionally, the aircraft reduces noise impact – essentially halving its noise footprint – causing far less disturbance to residents.</p><p><span><strong>More comfort and convenience</strong></span><br><span>Passengers on the A321neo experience more comfort thanks to wider seats, larger tables and more spacious luggage bins. Each seat is equipped with a USB-C port and a holder for a mobile or tablet. The aircraft also offers more convenience for the crew, including a wider aisle and easy-to-open luggage bins. The interior has been designed to enhance the KLM experience, with more recognisable details and mood lighting that adapts to each stage of the journey.</span></p><p><span><strong>Butterfly names</strong></span><br><span>The A321neo will start operating services to Copenhagen, Berlin and Stockholm from mid-September, followed by Paris, Prague and Vienna. KLM will be taking up three more new A321neo aircraft in its fleet this year. With this new aircraft series, KLM continues its tradition of giving aircraft unique names. Different themes have featured over the past 104 years, from names of members of the Royal Family to bridges, aviation pioneers and national parks. CEO Marjan Rintel: “This time, KLM employees were allowed to choose the theme. ‘Butterflies’ emerged as the winning theme, which ties in nicely with the transformation we’re embarking on with the new fleet. The names of the first four A321neo aircraft will be Swallowtail (</span><i><span>Koninginnepage</span></i><span>), Peach Blossom (</span><i><span>Braamvlinder</span></i><span>), Common Brimstone (</span><i><span>Citroenvlinder</span></i><span>) and Clouded Magpie (</span><i><span>Porseleinvlinder</span></i><span>).”</span></p><p><span><strong>Fleet renewal</strong></span><br><span>KLM will be investing seven billion euros in its fleet renewal programme over the next few years, which accounts for a substantial share of its total investment portfolio. On European routes, KLM will be replacing its older Boeing 737s with Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft. At KLM Cityhopper, new E2 models will join the Embraer 175 and 190 aircraft. For intercontinental flights, KLM will be adding five new Boeing 787-10s, followed by the Airbus A350 replacing the older 777s and A330s. During this phase, the airport, together with KLM Cityhopper and KLM Ground services, is testing a fixed, pre-programmed route to and from the apron. Part of the plan involves achieving more sustainable and emission-free ground operations. Royal Schiphol Group expects that by 2050 all vehicles will have been replaced by a fleet of autonomous, zero-emission vehicles and that all associated processes will be automated. Furthermore, the demonstration project will accelerate the development of concepts of operations for hydrogen aircraft across the EU.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>KLM aims to be a more sustainable airline. Supporting advanced technologies such as hydrogen and electric aviation is one of three pillars to help the aviation sector decarbonise. The maintenance divisions of KLM and Air France have already been working with ZeroAvia to build the knowledgebase for effective MRO operations for hydrogen fuel cell planes.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0in;"><span>ZeroAvia has already extensively tested a prototype of its first ZA600-engine aboard a Dornier 228 aircraft at its UK base. The company has also performed advanced ground tests in the US and UK for the key building block technologies for the ZA2000 system, including cryogenic tanks or LH2 and proprietary high-temperature PEM fuel cell and electric propulsion systems. Our balanced and effective adjustments obviate the need for capacity restrictions and reduction of secondary runway use, which meets the preconditions of the Balanced Approach.</span></p><p style="text-align:left;" align="left"><span>NLR’s calculations assessing the ministry’s plans confirm that KLM’s plan goes above and beyond the government’s noise reduction target. The diagram below shows what percentage of noise reduction can be achieved for local residents by November 2026, without cutting back on aircraft movements at Schiphol.</span></p><p style="text-align:left;" align="left"><span><strong>Balanced and effective</strong></span><br><span>KLM’s primary concern is that the principles of the Balanced Approach procedure are properly applied. This implies that measures should be balanced and effective.</span></p><ul><li><span><u>Balanced</u>: the proposal should comply with the requirements of the Balanced Approach, be handled with all due care and developed on the basis of objective, factual and legal principles</span></li><li><span><u>Effective</u>: the measures should be proportionate, cost-effective and feasible, and the effects of the measures should be properly mapped</span></li></ul><p style="text-align:left;" align="left"><span>Furthermore, a realistic timeline is needed to ensure that the quietest aircraft are deployed at night. The same goes in setting a clear starting point for the Balanced Approach, in which standard and accepted calculation methods are used to assess the actual magnitude of noise impact.</span></p><p style="text-align:left;" align="left"><span>All of the stakeholders submitted their visions this week. The next step is for the ministry to read and assess these visions in order to revise their package of measures. KLM remains committed to arrive at a balanced and effective package of measures to reduce noise impact. We are an international trading nation and KLM wants to keep connecting the Netherlands with the rest of the world, in balance with the environment.&nbsp;A similar ambition is acknowledged in the new government’s coalition agreement.</span></p><p><span>Our industry-wide plan “Cleaner, quieter and more fuel-efficient” shows that we can achieve the government's noise reduction target without drastically reducing the number of flight movements at Schiphol. This revised package includes various elements of our plan, including our proposals for tariff differentiation, higher airport fees for noisy aircraft, and fleet renewal with quieter aircraft.</span></p><p><span>Unfortunately, the package also includes measures that are harmful and not proportionate. This includes the proposed blanket ban on certain aircraft types from 2025, without giving our industry time to seek suitable alternatives. This would have major consequences for our cargo operation, where we ordered new, quieter aircraft two years ago, which are only expected to be delivered in 2026.</span></p><p><span>This means there’s a focus on shrinkage, instead of seeking a balanced approach to reducing noise impact. This ignores potential consequences such as countermeasures for Dutch airlines abroad, legal feasibility, and damage to the Netherlands as a trading nation.</span></p><p><span>It is of great importance that we carefully pursue a balanced approach that complies with European guidelines and that we jointly seek a good solution that is in the best interests of the communities surrounding Schiphol and that acknowledges the importance of air transport for the Netherlands. European regulations state that shrinkage should never be an end in itself, we must continue to focus on noise reduction. KLM is in favour of integrated implementation of the industry-wide plan “Cleaner, quieter and more fuel-efficient”, which will ensure that the government's noise reduction target is achieved within the designated period, without undue damage to our industry and the local business climate.</span></p><p><span>We will carefully examine the proposed measures in this revised package before presenting our vision in more detail.</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[statements,statement,citizenship,geluid,sustainability,schiphol]]></category>

                        <title>KLM deploys artificial intelligence to combat food waste</title>

AI programs enable the company to better predict how many passengers who have booked will actually board a flight. This allows the exact number of required meals to be calculated and KLM achieves up to 63% less food waste based on the expected number of passengers per flight. On an annual basis, this amounts to a saving of more than 100,000 kg of meals.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span>KLM is working on using artificial intelligence to determine the number of meals on board to help combat food waste. Not all bookings made result in a passenger on board a KLM aircraft. Depending on the class, between 3 and 5% of booked passengers do not show up (on time) for the flight.</span></p><p><span>The latest AI model (TRAYS) is the first model specifically developed for KLM’s catering activities. The AI model predicts the number of passengers on board based on historical data. The Meals On Board System (MOBS) receives the expected passenger numbers per flight with separate forecasts for Business, Premium Comfort and Economy classes. The prediction using the AI model starts 17 days before departure and continues until 20 minutes before the flight departs. This means the most accurate possible number of passengers is predicted for the entire catering process from purchasing to loading, thus preventing a surplus of meals.</span></p><p><span>The AI model TRAYS was launched at the end of last year by Kickstart AI. The initiative assembled talent from leading companies, including KLM, bol, Ahold Delhaize, NS and ING, to work on the development of this model.</span></p><p><span>A three-month analysis shows that 63% less food is wasted compared to catering for every booked passenger. The largest improvement can be seen on intercontinental KLM flights from Schiphol, where 2.5 fewer meals (1.3 kg) need to be thrown away per flight. On an annual basis, this amounts to a saving of 111,000 kg in meals across all KLM flights that are catered from Schiphol.</span></p><p><span>KLM is also working on the application of artificial intelligence in other parts of its business operations. For instance, AI is important in making aircraft maintenance smarter. In addition, AI programs are used to simulate predicted bad weather days, making it clear in advance which schedule would be best to allow flights to continue as much as possible. Together with the baggage handlers, they will shape the future of this type of work. Even with the application of digital innovations, the future of this work will still revolve around the balance between humans and machines. The baggage handlers therefore have an essential role to play: their observations, wishes and experiences hold sway.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>“We need to learn from the experts in the workplace what is important to them in their work and what they would like to see done differently”, says Professor Abbink. “The members of our research team have different backgrounds, which enables us to try to expose each other’s blind spots, so that we can learn more together than we would individually. That is essential to be able to explore different possible solutions with and for the experts: technical, social or organisational.”</span><br><br><span>Harm Josephi, Vice President of Baggage Services at KLM adds: “KLM and Schiphol have long been leading the way all over the world in terms of reducing physical strain in baggage handling. But there’s always room for improvement. By working together with Schiphol and Delft University of Technology, we are taking new steps to make working in baggage areas physically less demanding. This collaboration will facilitate improvements that can eventually be implemented at airports around the world. That’s something we can be proud of in the Netherlands.”</span></p><p><span>“Every workplace in the baggage handling hall will have a properly functioning lifting aid by April 2024, which must be used by all employees. At the same time, we are also working on the next step for the period after this: automation of physical work. Even in an automated baggage handling hall, employees will still have an important role. We are shaping the future of work and how the role of people will change in it. The study will help us shape that together with employees”, according to Dennis van Kleef, who is responsible for baggage at Royal Schiphol Group.</span></p><p><span><strong>Broad perspectives</strong></span><br><span>The researchers from various universities who are coming together in TU Delft FRAIM have diverse backgrounds in design, psychology, organisational change, robotics and logistics. This broad perspective allows them to assess the impact of technical innovations early, accelerated by innovation expertise from TU Delft's field lab RoboHouse. The fact that this research is not done in a lab, but rather in the baggage halls with the people who work there, ensures crucial cooperation between baggage workers and researchers, and therefore realistic, actionable outcomes. Schiphol, KLM and TU Delft believe that this approach will really move things forward.</span></p><p><span>The study will have been successful when a new way of working is developed together with baggage hall employees. If all goes well, the collaboration will become a long-term partnership to make this groundbreaking way of working a reality.</span></p><p><span>The study being done by TU Delft is part of the plan that all parties involved in baggage handling at Schiphol have presented to lighten the work in the baggage halls. The parties involved will be following through with these plans. An important part of this relates to its commitment to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 3 emissions by 30% per revenue tonne kilometre (RTK) by 2030 compared to 2019. Together with Air France-KLM and Air France, this target was submitted and recently approved by SBTi’s Target Validation Team. SBTi has determined that it complies with the well-below 2°C trajectory set for the airline industry, as determined by the Paris Agreement signed in 2015.</span></p><p><span>KLM is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its activities as far as possible. The following three pillars are important to this approach:</span></p><ul><li><span>A plan to modernise and renew the Air France and KLM fleets with the latest generation of aircraft emitting 20% to 25% less CO<sub>2</sub> compared to their predecessors. With the objective of 64% of new generation aircraft in the fleet by 2028, Air France-KLM currently invests over €2 billion annually in the acquisition of Airbus A220s, Airbus A320s and A321neo aircraft, Airbus A350s, Boeing 787s and Embraer 195‑E2s, which are amongst the most efficient aircraft in their respective categories.</span></li><li><span>The use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This non-fossil-based fuel can be produced from industrial or domestic waste, which contributes to a more circular economy, and the SAF sourced by Air France-KLM does not compete with the food chain for people and/or animals. Two off-take agreements were signed in November 2022 to secure 3% of the 10% of our SAF objective by 2030.</span></li><li><span>The improvement of operational efficiency by favouring more direct routes and introducing procedures that reduce fuel consumption (single-engine taxi, continuous descent).</span></li></ul><p><span style="background-color:white;">Additionally, KLM cooperates with a wide variety of sector partners. We are committed to developing innovative solutions for aircraft design and maintenance, engines and synthetic fuels. Aside from the target that has now earned SBTi validation, KLM is also committed to achieving other objectives intended to reduce our environmental impact.</span></p><p><span><strong>SBTi – a scientific approach in compliance with the Paris Agreement&nbsp;</strong></span></p><p><span>The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emission reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. The initiative is a partnership between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The two agreements will cover a third of our needs until 2030 and the first deliveries are expected in 2023.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span><strong>Commitment to different alternative fuels</strong></span></p><p><span>Over and above reducing fuel consumption and as a drop-in fuel, SAF is a solution to reduce CO<sub>2</sub> emissions generated by the airline industry in the short to medium term, without the need for modifications to existing infrastructure and equipment. It has the potential to reduce CO<sub>2</sub> emissions in pure form by an average of 80% (compared to fossil fuel), depending on the combination of technology and raw materials chosen, and as long as strict sustainability criteria are met.</span></p><p><span>Air France-KLM has established a strict procurement policy whereby it commits to only purchasing sustainable fuels that do not compete with the production and supply of food for humans or animals, are certified under RSB or ISCC+ and have not been produced from palm oil.</span></p><p><span>SAF is not yet widely available. </span><span style="background-color:white;"><span>KLM is committed to scaling up the production and use of SAF to achieve greater sustainability in the future. Based on scientifically substantiated targets to reduce CO<sub>2</sub> emissions and working in consultation, a corresponding path will be established and validated.&nbsp;Pieter Elbers, CEO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines: &ldquo;The earth has clear limits as to how we use our resources and the volume of emissions we generate. In recent years, we have worked hard at a national, European and global level to cooperate, innovate and define agreements. Initiatives including fleet renewal, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and further operational innovation and efficiency will enable us to achieve the targets.&rdquo; (<em>see&nbsp;enclosed "KLM's pathway towards the Paris climate goals"</em>)</span></span></p><p><span><span><strong>Fly Responsibly</strong></span></span></p><p><span><span>In 2019, KLM introduced its <a href="https://flyresponsibly.klm.com/gb_en#home">Fly Responsibly</a> sustainability initiative, directed at transforming KLM into a more sustainable airline. In addition to fleet renewal, scaling-up production and use of SAF form the cornerstone of KLM&rsquo;s approach. Cooperation and supportive policies are needed to create a level playing field upon which SAF will become the standard. Elbers: &ldquo;A successful, ambitious climate policy hinges on cooperating well with industry parties, knowledge institutions and governments. Together, we must reach solid agreements that truly support the energy transition.&rdquo;</span></span></p><p><span><span>Despite the huge impact of Covid-19, sustainability has remained a top priority for KLM. In 2021, KLM added the first of 25 new Embraer 195-E2 aircraft to its fleet. This aircraft emits 31% less CO2 per passenger than its predecessor. KLM also took part in trials involving sustainable taxiing and operated the world&rsquo;s first commercial flight powered by a fuel mixture containing synthetic kerosene.</span></span></p><p><span><span><span><strong><span><span>How does SBTi work?</span></span></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span>SBTi is a partnership between four NGOs and knowledge institutions: the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), World Resources Institute (WRI), UN Global Compact and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). SBTi helps private-sector organisations to set climate targets in line with the Paris Climate Agreement, based on what science tells them is necessary to honour the agreement, and to give short and medium-term targets concrete shape. Working with SBTi will enable KLM to gradually reduce its CO<sub>2</sub> emissions per passenger-kilometre. A number of these proposals will affect KLM directly and the airline industry as a whole.</span></em></span></span></p>
]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span><span><span style="color:black">KLM supports the EU&rsquo;s goal of becoming the first continent to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 wholeheartedly. We therefore welcome the Fitfor55 package as part of the European Green Deal. Our full support can be relied upon for measures in this package that will truly help the airline industry to become more sustainable.</span></span></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span><span><span style="color:black">The challenge we are facing is global, making unambiguous policy at a global level essential. A European Union that sets the tone with good European policies using strong instruments to improve sustainability is important for furthering this transition. It is vital that everyone participates and that a level playing field is maintained globally. We must become more sustainable, while ensuring that we can continue to compete with the rest of the world.</span></span></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span><span><span style="color:black">The European airline industry presented its own ambitious roadmap in February of this year, entitled</span> <a href="http://www.destination2050.eu/" style="color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline">Destination 2050</a><span class="MsoHyperlink" style="color:#0563c1"><u><span><span>.</span></span></u></span><span class="MsoHyperlink"> It was written by the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) and SEO Amsterdam Economics and contains concrete steps and recommendations for achieving net-zero</span> CO<sub>2</sub> emissions by 2050 for all flights departing from European airports. </span></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span class="MsoHyperlink">We are delighted that many of the proposals the European Commission presented today correspond well with the vision we presented in Destination 2050. We support measures for upscaling the production and use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), which emit up to 85% less</span> CO<sub>2</sub> than regular kerosene. In addition, we advocate for indisputable sustainability criteria for such alternatives. A Single European Sky is also essential alongside this package of measures, because ensuring airlines can take the most direct routes in Europe could reduce CO<sub>2</sub> emissions in Europe by up to 10%.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span><span>Such measures are effective in helping the airline industry to become more sustainable. Introducing general levies, such as a European kerosene tax, will not achieve this, because they do not directly lead to a reduction in CO<sub>2</sub> emissions and moreover the revenues raised are not invested in boosting sustainability in the industry. Kerosene tax may well have the opposite effect, leading to aircraft flying longer routes to circumvent the tax and thereby increasing emissions.</span></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span><span>We need to implement those measures that will actually efficiently and effectively reduce CO<sub>2</sub> emissions. EU policy must support the airline industry&rsquo;s efforts to become more sustainable. The funding will support the consortium to continue their study on an integrated Fischer-Tropsch SAF production facility using forestry residues. The envisioned facility has the potential to be an important step forward in making aviation more sustainable. The Swedish Energy Agency awards the consortium with a grant of 5.1 million SEK (+/-EUR 500.000) to fund the project.</b></span></span></p>
]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span>This first-of-its-kind Fischer-Tropsch SAF production facility integrated with existing bio-based energy production has the potential to produce high quality sustainable fuels and reduce GHG emissions in the aviation sector. The realisation of the plant could serve as a proof of concept for many future plants. By 2026, the plant could be operational with a production volume of 16 kilo tonnes SAF annually.</span></span></p><p><span><span><b>Dutch-Swedish consortium covering the whole value chain</b></span></span></p><p><span><span>The consortium, which represents the whole value chain of the production, joins forces in order to increase the availability of SAF in Sweden and North Europe. To meet future demand partners will research all engineering, technical, business and sustainability angles of the project. <span>NGOs, the Swedish government,</span> S&ouml;dra<span>, certification systems, academics and SkyNRG&rsquo;s Sustainability Board are being involved to set the right sustainability framework for this project. Sustainability factors considered in the study include the carbon balance and the biodiversity of the forest as well as potential displacement effects of utilising forestry residues for SAF production.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><b>SAF not widely available</b></span></span></p><p><span><span>The current generation of aircraft engines require liquid fuels. These aircraft cannot switch to alternative energy sources such as hydrogen or electricity in the short term, and neither can airport infrastructure. SAF, as a &lsquo;drop-in fuel&rsquo; is the solution to drastically reduce CO<sub>2</sub> emissions in aviation in the short to medium term, with no modifications to infrastructure or equipment required.&nbsp;</span></span><span><span>SAF is not widely available yet. It has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by 75 to almost 100 percent in its neat form, depending on the combination of technology pathway and feedstock, and as long as stringent sustainability criteria are met.</span></span></p><p><span><span><b>KLM Royal Dutch Airlines: focus on alternative technologies</b></span></span></p><p><span><span>Karel Bockstael, VP Sustainability at KLM, an ambitious and pioneering airline in making the operation and the aviation sector more sustainable: <i>&ldquo;To be able to become more sustainable in the future, KLM is focusing on scaling up production and use of SAF. For more SAF, we must focus on all technologies side by side and encourage the initial upscaling of production facilities. The application we support in Sweden is an important next step in the development. Current technologies based on used cooking oils will reach its limit due to scarcity, and the development of sustainable synthetic SAF has financial and technological challenges to overcome.&nbsp;The technology we will be deploying in Sweden is based on Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, and produces jet fuel based on forestry residues. There is a lot of this residue available in Sweden and the rest of Europe, making it a promising project.&rdquo;</i></span></span></p><p><span><span><b>S&ouml;dra: small-scale family forestry of 53,000 forest owners</b></span></span></p><p><span><span>Lotta Lyr&aring;, President and CEO of S&ouml;dra, an international forest industry group and the largest forest-owner association in Sweden with a membership of 53,000 forest owners: <i>&ldquo;</i><i>S&ouml;dra is devoted to maximize the use of every tree that comes from our 53,000 member&rsquo;s forests in Southern Sweden. Using every part &ndash; like residues &ndash; is key in our ambition to show the way to a fossil-free society and contribute to the climate transition. Making high quality Sustainable Aviation Fuel from forest residues not suitable for buildings or other materials is a way of doing so and help de-carbonize aviation.                         <guid>https://news.klm.com/sustainability-report-air-france-klm-2020-now-available/</guid><pp:caseid>460118</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<h2><span><span><b><span><span><span>Highlights of KLM&rsquo;s sustainability activities 2020</span></span></span></b></span></span>&nbsp;</h2><p><span><span><b><span><span><span>(see also attachment: KLM Sustainability at a glance 2020)</span></span></span></b></span></span></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><span><span><b><span><span><span>Fly Responsibly: reducing, replacing and compensating</span></span></span></b>&nbsp;</span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Compared to 2005, KLM has reduced its total CO<sub>2</sub> emissions by an absolute four per cent and 31 per cent per passenger, per kilometer as of 2019. It must be noted of course that KLM&rsquo;s production in 2020 deviated significantly from previous years as a result of which this year&rsquo;s CO<sub>2</sub> emission figures cannot be compared easily with other years and targets. For 2030, the goal is to reduce these levels by 15 and 50 per cent respectively. To this end, KLM continued to invest in more fuel-efficient aircraft with a lower noise footprint. Meanwhile, KLM&rsquo;s CO2ZERO program enables passengers to compensate their CO<sub>2</sub> emissions and in 2020, some 51,053 ton was offset this way. In 2020, Transavia partnered with KLM on CO2ZERO. KLM, which in 2011 was the world&rsquo;s first airline to carry out a commercial flight partly fueled by Sustainable Aircraft Fuel (SAF), committed itself to use 14 per cent SAF of the total volume used in the Netherlands by 2030. The customer proposition was broadened by expanding the corporate biofuel program to cargo customers and Air France decided to adopt KLM&rsquo;s corporate biofuel program in 2021.</span>&nbsp;</span></span></p><p><span><span><b><span><span><span>Ground operations and replacing short distance flights by train</span></span></span></b>&nbsp;</span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span>KLM&rsquo;s ambition is to have zero emissions from ground operations by 2030. Therefore, KLM has invested in the electrification of ground equipment. Some 62 per cent of KLM&rsquo;s ground equipment is now electric. Tests have been conducted at Schiphol with the use of electric taxi equipment. KLM is in favour of a European network of high-speed trains replacing short distance flights. In early 2020, KLM replaced one of&nbsp;its five daily flights to Brussels with a journey on the Thalys. KLM is actively investigating with the Dutch rail company (NS), Schiphol Airport and the Dutch Government how to replace more short flights by trains. KLM expanded its notion of sustainability to not only encompass environmental goals, but to include the role it has in serving society, enabling economic activity and being one of the largest private employers in the Netherlands.</span></span></span>&nbsp;</span></span></p><p><span><span><b><span><span><span>First flight of Flying V scale model</span></span></span></b>&nbsp;</span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span>KLM already worked with academic institutions, airline partners and the government on several initiatives to reduce CO<sub>2</sub> emissions. Strategies for achieving this include fleet renewal, the use of SAFs, optimising flight paths and procedures, the aim for emission-free airports and the adoption of the train for short distances. With the help of KLM, the Delft University of Technology made the maiden flight of its revolutionary Flying V model aircraft. KLM contributed to the action program Hybrid Electric Flight, which was submitted to the Dutch parliament. More waste and weight reduction initiatives have been worked on with external partners like the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.</span></span></span>&nbsp;</span></span></p><p><span><span><b><span><span><span>KLM aims at a complete sustainable transformation</span></span></span></b>&nbsp;</span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span>KLM expanded its notion of sustainability to not only encompass environmental goals, but to include the role it has in serving society, enabling economic activity and being one of the largest private employers in the Netherlands. This deepening and broadening of KLM&rsquo;s sustainability ambitions aligns well with KLM&rsquo;s restructuring plan &lsquo;Building Back Better&rsquo;. Within this context, KLM developed a vision of how sustainability applies to the people-side of the business, by means of a ten-year roadmap that will improve staff engagement, diversity and inclusion, community engagement and human rights across the supply chain. Engagement for sustainability has increased in 2020. Sustainability was integrated into KLM&rsquo;s Compass, which outlines the values, principles and behaviors of staff. A sustainability ecosystem of people involved in the subject was set up across the company, including Transavia, Cargo and E&M. The new aircraft type is both quieter and more economical than its predecessor the Embraer 190. The 195-E2 uses 9% less fuel per flight and therefore emits 31% less CO<sub>2</sub> per passenger in comparison with the E-190. This new type is also 63% quieter than the Embraer 190. Fleet renewal forms an important part of KLM&rsquo;s approach towards making its operations more sustainable. Seven new aircraft of this type will be joining the KLM Cityhopper fleet this year. KLM has ordered a total of 25.</span></span></b></span></span></span></span></p>
]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The latest addition to the fleet will be taken into operation on 1 March for destinations within the European network. The aircraft can carry 132 passengers, making it the biggest in the KLM Cityhopper fleet, which now consists of 32 Embraer 190s and 17 Embraer 175s. ]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span><span><span><span>The Netherlands is one of the leading countries in Europe that aim to boost the development and application of sustainable aviation fuels to make aviation more sustainable. The Netherlands wants to stimulate the development and application of sustainable aviation fuels (biofuels and synthetic kerosene) so European airlines will be able to fly entirely on sustainable fuel by 2050. The Dutch government supports various initiatives to stimulate production and use and thereby make it commercially viable. The construction of the first European factory for sustainable biokerosene in Delfzijl, The Netherlands, for which SkyNRG is collaborating with KLM, Schiphol Airport and SHV Energy, is one example.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><b><span><span>500 liters delivered, refueled and used</span></span></b></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>As announced during the conference, the first commercial passenger flight from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Madrid last month, was carried out on an admixture of 500 liters of sustainable synthetic kerosene. Shell produced the synthetic kerosene in its research center in Amsterdam based on CO<sub>2</sub>, water and renewable energy from sun and wind from Dutch soil.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><b><span><span>New initiatives and startups</span></span></b></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>During the conference, the stage was set for various new initiatives and startups. For example, the start-up Synkero announced that it is collaborating with Port of Amsterdam, Schiphol, KLM and SkyNRG on the realization of a commercial synthetic sustainable kerosene factory in the Amsterdam port. The project seeks to link with sustainable initiatives in the North Sea Canal area, such as the establishment of a 100 megawatt hydrogen plant where up to 15,000 tons of green hydrogen can be produced with sustainable electricity.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>Another initiative is the construction of a demonstration factory for sustainable kerosene using captured CO<sub>2</sub> from the air as a raw material in Rotterdam. The Zenid initiative, in which Uniper, Rotterdam The Hague Airport, Climeworks, SkyNRG and Rotterdam The Hague Innovation Airport are participating, uses a combination of innovative technologies to focus on CO<sub>2</sub>-neutral aviation with sustainable synthetic kerosene.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>Several European politicians, including Commissioner Timmermans, the German transport minister Scheuer and his French colleague Djebbari, underlined the importance of developing sustainably produced aviation fuels to reduce CO<sub>2</sub> emissions and give aviation a good future.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>Various European member states have indicated during the conference that they want to work on this. In a joint statement, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Germany, Finland, Luxembourg and Spain indicate that recovery from the current crisis due to the pandemic must go hand in hand with accelerating the sustainability of the aviation sector in order to achieve climate goals and call on the European Commission to come up with a European blending obligation. When KLM launched Fly Responsibly last year, we committed to creating a more sustainable future for the airline industry. But, we can only make real progress if the entire sector works together, not only in the Netherlands, but across Europe and the world. The construction of a SAF factory, participation in the Action Agenda for Rail and Air Transport (Actieagenda Trein en Luchtvaart) and the coalition Clean Skies for Tomorrow are good examples of existing initiatives.<br />

Our ambitions and efforts to become more sustainable are by no means diminished by Covid-19. Rather, we are accelerating our efforts in this area. Our fleet renewal programme continues and we have scaled-up our ambitions with regard to cutting emissions and increasing the use of sustainable fuel. KLM is extremely proud of this position, which indicates how successful KLM is at working to make airlines and the aviation sector more sustainable. Below is a summary of the most important activities KLM undertook in 2019. (The full list can be found in the appendix "2019 at a Glance").</p><p><strong><u>Fly Responsibly</u></strong></p><p>In June 2019, KLM launched <a href="https://flyresponsibly.klm.com/gb_en#home">Fly Responsibly</a> as part of its ongoing commitment to ensure a more sustainable future for aviation. Fly Responsibly encompasses everything KLM is doing, and is going to do, to make its activities more sustainable and is predicated on three strategic pillars: Reduce, Replace, Compensate. In an open letter published worldwide in 2019, KLM invited stakeholders across the aviation industry to join forces to develop sustainable solutions for the sector. Under the banner Fly Responsibly, KLM invited &ndash; and continues to invite &ndash; other airlines, partners, customers and employees to use KLM's sustainability projects and resources, and to share their insights and experiences with KLM in return.</p><p><strong><u>Reducing carbon emissions, SAF and compensation</u></strong></p><p>The KLM Group has cut its total carbon emissions by 4% since 2005 and by 31% per passenger kilometer&nbsp;(compared to 2005). The targets for 2030 stand at -15% and -50% respectively. Fleet renewal has contributed substantially to this result. In 2019, KLM took delivery of eight new, quieter and more fuel-efficient aircraft, including the Dreamliner 787-10.</p><p>KLM is also continuing to invest in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Last year KLM purchased 6911 tonnes of SAF and announced that it would be building the Netherlands' <a href="https://news.klm.com/klm-skynrg-and-shv-energy-announce-project-first-european-plant-for-sustainable-aviation-fuel/">first SAF production plant</a> in partnership with SkyNRG. This will enable KLM to increase its use of sustainable fuel in the near future. New partners also joined KLM's Corporate Biofuel Programme: Microsoft, SHV Energy and Neste.</p><p>KLM has also taken further steps to reduce carbon emissions on the ground. It aims to achieve a carbon-neutral ground operation by around 2030. Last year, KLM reduced its ground operations' carbon emissions by 50%, compared to the previous year (2018). This was achieved by buying in green energy and deploying electric ground equipment.</p><p>175,000 passengers' travel was carbon neutral last year, thanks to KLM's compensation programme <a href="https://www.klm.com/travel/nl_en/plan_and_book/special_offers/carbon_dioxide_zero/index.htm">CO2ZERO</a>. This scheme enabled 680 hectares of tropical forest to be planted in Panama.</p><p><strong><u>Reducing waste volume</u></strong></p><p>KLM has already achieved a 19% reduction in non-recyclable waste, which it aims to cut further to 50% by 2030 (compared to 2011). This will be achieved by producing less waste overall and by increasing the proportion that can be recycled. KLM is also investing in other innovative ideas, such as recycling different kinds of catering items within a closed system and recycling PET bottles into <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D_QtBWzk9M">3D-printer</a> filament to make aircraft repair and maintenance tools.</p><p><strong><u>Flying V</u></strong></p><p>KLM has also contributed to research into an innovative aircraft design, called <a href="https://news.klm.com/klm-and-tu-delft-join-forces-to-make-aviation-more-sustainable/">Flying V</a>, at Delft University of Technology. This concept represents an entirely new approach to aircraft design, which will make long-haul flight operations much more sustainable in future.</p><p><strong><u>Replacing short-haul flights</u></strong></p><p>Thalys, NS and KLM last year joined forces for the action plan Smart and Sustainable, to prepare to replace short-haul flights with international rail links. The first daily service that KLM intended to remove from its flight schedule and replace with a train service was Amsterdam-Brussels. The trial is being carried out with a Taxibot. This is a hybrid towing vehicle which, unlike the normal pushback trucks, is licenced to tow full aircraft to near the start of the runway, without the aircraft having to start its engines. This is expected to reduce fuel consumption during taxiing by 50% to 85%. Schiphol Airport has made the Taxibot available to KLM, Transavia and Corendon to enable them to carry out joint research into more sustainable ways to taxi.</p><p>During today's test, an empty KLM Boeing 737 was towed to the runway by the Taxibot. "It's important to find out how far we can cut CO<sub>2</sub> emissions by using the Taxibot," explained KLM's project manager, Jeroen Jaartsveld. "We'd also like to know how long it takes to taxi with the Taxibot, what effect this has on aircraft engine maintenance, and how we might introduce sustainable taxiing with Taxibots on a large scale into Schiphol's daily operations."</p><p><strong>Fly Responsibly</strong></p><p>KLM's sustainability initiative, Fly Responsibly, launched last year, included a commitment to reducing carbon emissions caused by taxiing. ]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>Worldwide, more than 150,000 seafarers have been waiting for a solution for months now. The Dutch shipowners account for around 12,000 seafarers. Sea transport serves as the logistical backbone of world trade, with no less than 90% of all goods being shipped by sea. Seafarers being able to travel to and from these ocean-going vessels is essential for the safety of these vessels at sea.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The coronavirus pandemic has led to severe travel restrictions, which also vary from country to country. Cancelled flights were a further consequence. Within a short space of time it became virtually impossible for seafarers to travel home from ocean-going vessels and vice versa,&rdquo; says KVNR CEO Annet Koster. &ldquo;We are very grateful to KLM for having embraced this initiative and for the fact that the air bridges are now a reality. This is a welcome development for seafarers, their families and shipowners alike.&rdquo;</p>

<p>KLM will begin implementing the plan &ndash; drawn up jointly with KVNR and Boers Crew Services &ndash; to once again facilitate crew replenishment. The (Dutch) shipowners have the greatest need for air bridges between Amsterdam, which is close to many major seaports in Northwest Europe, and the Philippines, Russia, Ukraine, Indonesia and Poland, where most seafarers reside.</p>

<p>KLM is already operating flights between Amsterdam and Warsaw, and is currently in consultation with the Russian and Ukrainian governments and aviation authorities to obtain permission to operate flights to Kiev and St. Petersburg. As of 25 May, KLM will be operating four flights a week between Amsterdam and Manila, stopping over in Bangkok.</p>

The containers, lids and glasses were collected earlier this month off four Vancouver Amsterdam flights. They have now been cleaned and are after recycling being reused on this flight.</strong>&nbsp;</p>

The sustainable fuel is produced by </strong><a href="https://www.neste.com/en"><strong>Neste </strong></a><strong>from used cooking oil and will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80 % compared to fossil kerosene. This purchase is the next step in the use of sustainable fuel as it is the first time the fuel will be supplied using the existing infrastructure at Schiphol. Furthermore, Neste is joining KLM’s Corporate BioFuel Programme. In doing so, Neste will reduce the CO2 emissions of its own business travel on KLM flights by 100%.</strong></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><strong>A sustainable first at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport</strong></p><p>The quantity of SAF will be blended with fossil fuel and is entirely certified according to the conventional specification for aviation fuel (ASTM), meeting the same quality and safety requirements. The blend will be supplied to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and is being treated completely as a drop-in fuel using the existing conventional fuel infrastructure, pipeline, and storage and hydrant system. In this way, sustainable aviation fuel contributes to reducing CO2 emissions from flights taking off from Amsterdam through CO2 footprint reductions in the supply chain.</p><p>KLM only sources sustainable aviation fuels based on waste and residue feedstocks that significantly reduce the CO2 footprint and do not have a negative impact on food production or the environment. The sustainability of the chain is ensured through certification by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification Plus (ISCC+) and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB).</p><p>This volume is additional to the existing supply from Los Angeles to bridge the period towards the opening of the SAF production plant which is to be built in Delfzijl, Netherlands in 2022. This plant which is being developed by support of KLM along with industry partners will supply 75,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel a year to KLM.</p><p><strong>Instant emission reduction with sustainable aviation fuel</strong></p><p>Neste’s sustainable aviation fuel is produced from renewable waste and residue raw materials. Over the lifecycle including the impact of logistics, sustainable aviation fuel has up to 80% smaller carbon footprint compared to fossil jet fuel. It is fully compatible with the existing jet engine technology and fuel distribution infrastructure when blended with fossil jet fuel. In the US and Europe, the company’s renewable jet fuel annual capacity is currently 100,000 tons. With further production expansion on the way, Neste will have the capacity to produce over 1 million tonnes of renewable jet fuel globally by 2022.</p><p><strong>Unique cooperation</strong></p><p>Neste is joining KLM’s Corporate BioFuel Programme. The KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme enables companies and organisations to ensure that sustainable aviation fuel is used for all or a portion of their air travel. Participants pay a surcharge that covers the difference in price between sustainable aviation fuel and regular kerosene. In so doing, they set an example and actively contribute to make air transport more sustainable. In June, KLM Cityhopper announced its intention to buy 35 Embraer 195-E2s, but this order comprised a fixed order for 15 aircraft plus an option for another 20. The fixed part of this order has therefore been raised by six. The first Embraer 195-E2 will be delivered in the first quarter of 2021.</p>

<p><strong>Better customer experience</strong></p>

<p>The new aircraft will be equipped with new Recaro seats, which are ergonomically designed and leave space for more legroom. They are lighter than the current seats. This is beneficial for fuel consumption and will reduce CO<sub>2</sub> emissions. The Business Class seats have adjustable back and headrests. All seats will have a USB port and there will be Wi-Fi on board. The Recaro seats are already in use aboard KLM&rsquo;s newest Boeing 737s. The cabin has atmospheric lighting and the newly designed overhead compartments offer more space for carry-on baggage. By adding a third cabin attendant aboard these flights, KLM expects to optimise the travel experience for its customers.</p>

<p><strong>Sustainability</strong></p>

<p>Although the new Embraers offer greater capacity, they are more sustainable and silent than their predecessors. The E195-E2 burns 9% less fuel per flight and emits 31% less CO<sub>2</sub> per passenger than the E190. The Embraer 195-E2 is also 48% more silent than the Embraer 190. The replacement of older aircraft with newer types is in line with KLM&rsquo;s initiative Fly Responsibly.</p>

<p>With Fly Responsibly, KLM has committed itself to creating a more sustainable future for the airline industry. In so doing, SHV Energy will reduce its headquarters&rsquo; CO2 emissions by 50%. Additionally, the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) has extended its participation in KCBP for a further two-year period. TU Delft first joined the programme on 1 July 2017.</p>
]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><strong>About the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme</strong></p>

<p>The KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme (KCBP) makes it possible for companies to power a share of their flights using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The participants pay a surcharge that covers the difference in price between SAF and traditional jet fuel. In turn, the surcharges are used to purchase SAF.</p>

<p><strong>But why is the programme so important?</strong></p>

<p>Due to insufficient production capacity and concomitant availability of sustainable feedstock, SAF is in short supply. Using SAF could reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 85%. KLM is convinced that SAF is important in the short and medium term in order to achieve the airline industry&rsquo;s envisaged reduction in CO2 emissions. For this reason, KLM, SkyNRG and SHV Energy announced in May this year that they would be joining forces to build the first European SAF production plant in Delfzijl in the Netherlands. By 2022, the plant will be producing 100,000 tonnes of SAF and, as a by-product, 15,000 tonnes of bioLPG a year.</p>

Empty bottles are collected at the end of every flight and transformed into filament, the material used in 3D printers. This process means an empty water bottle can end up as part of a 3D-printed piece of equipment that saves Engineering & Maintenance time and money.</strong></p>
]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>In the same way normal printers use ink, 3D printers need filament to print with. KLM used to buy this material from external suppliers. But now empty PET bottles from its flights are delivered to a recycling company in exchange for high-quality plastic pellets, which are the main material in filament. The tonnes of plastic bottles that are taken off aircraft at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol every year are recycled into this filament.</p><p><strong>3D printers at E&M</strong></p><p>KLM Engineering & Maintenance has been using 3D printers for quite some time in ways that speed up repair and maintenance processes. For example, special plugs have been developed to ensure that rim holes don't get painted over when the wheels on Boeing 737s are painted.</p><p>Protective tape is no longer used at Engine Services during the maintenance of turbine blades. It has been replaced by a 3D-printed cover. And the tool Engine Services designed for removing overhead baggage bins on board the Boeing 787 means this task can now be carried out by one mechanic instead of two.</p><p>KLM heeft als doel om in 2030 het restafval met 50 procent te verminderen ten opzichte van 2011, door in totaal minder afval te produceren en het deel dat gerecycled kan worden te verhogen. Because KLM now supplies PET bottles as a raw material, the cost of this filament has dropped from EUR 60/kg to just EUR 17/kg. By working with the recycling company Morssinkhof Rymoplast and the filament manufacturer Reflow, KLM is now able not only to be innovative in its use of 3D printing, but also to make the process circular.</p><p><strong>Reduce waste</strong></p><p>KLM aims to reduce the volume of its waste by 50% in 2030, compared to 2011 levels. This will be achieved by producing less waste overall and increasing the amount that can be recycled. In 2018, KLM reduced waste by 9% and 28% of what remained was recycled.</p>]]></description><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

KLM and ADE will compensate CO<sub>2</sub> for visitors who flew in on KLM flights.</p>

ADE and KLM felt they should respond accordingly and joined hands to mitigate the ecological impact of the event. Visitors who purchased a combined ADE entry ticket and KLM air ticket, will have their CO<sub>2</sub> emissions compensated via the CO2ZERO programme. This cooperation between KLM and ADE fits perfectly in KLM's Fly Responsibly initiative.</p>

<p><strong>CO2ZERO compensation service</strong></p>

<p>KLM&rsquo;s CO2ZERO compensation service enables passengers to compensate for their flight-related carbon emissions. Passengers who choose to compensate contribute to the &ldquo;CO2OL Tropical Mix&rdquo; reforestation initiative in Panama. This project carries the Gold Standard Global Goals certificate. The project combines the protection of biodiversity and ecosystem restoration with sustainable timber production and small-scale sustainable cacao plantations. Besides the numerous environmental benefits, the project&rsquo;s activities integrate capacity building and create long-term employment with a sustainable source of income for the local population.</p>

Founded in 1919, KLM is the first commercial airline that is still flying under its original name to reach this milestone in the world. A true pioneer in aviation, KLM is celebrating its centenary with a film that looks back at some of its remarkable history, while showing progress throughout the last ten decades. Underlining the evolution of aviation - and also that of society as a whole.&nbsp;Since KLM&rsquo;s first commercial flight right up until today, the company has set its sight on progress.</p>

<p>Throughout the years, KLM has brought the wonder of air travel to generations. The new film tells the story of three generations of the same family who worked with KLM from the early days to the present, serving and caring for passengers. The first two featured women are inspired to fly and become flight attendants. However, the film closes with the granddaughter of the original woman, who ends up in the cockpit, taking off, as captain of KLM&rsquo;s newest airplane, the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner.</p>

<p><strong>Recreating history</strong></p>

<p>The film tracks KLM&rsquo;s evolution from 1919 to the present day and features classic airplanes such as the Fokker F.II in 1934, the Douglas DC-4 in 1949, Boeing 747 in 1975 and ending with the brand-new Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner. All brought to life with the authentic uniforms, props and details from each decade.</p>

<p>The picture-perfect period detail was created by using some of the original airplanes, building historically accurate sets and by blending archive footage with cutting edge film techniques. The film is conceived and created by KLM&rsquo;s creative partner, DDB Unlimited.&nbsp;The team at DDB Unlimited worked closely with historians working at the KLM Heritage Centre to ensure historical accuracy - paying minute attention to detail.</p>

<p><strong>Fly Responsibly</strong></p>

<p>One of the other ways that KLM is marking its centenary is by looking to the future. KLM has stepped forward to ask the aviation industry as a whole to join forces to create a more sustainable future for aviation.</p>

Building on KLM’s Corporate BioFuel Program, Microsoft will purchase an amount of SAF equivalent to all flights taken by Microsoft employees between the USA and Netherlands (and vice versa) on KLM and Delta Airlines.</p><p>In addition, Microsoft and KLM intend to explore areas of cooperation that would further improve sustainability and reduce emissions associated with air travel. With &ldquo;Fly Responsibly&rdquo;, KLM therefore invites consumers to compensate for their share of CO<sub>2</sub> emissions from their flight. Companies are invited to compensate for business travel by way of the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme. One very recent example of our efforts to Fly Responsibly was announced yesterday: from 29 March 2020, we will replace one of our daily flights between Amsterdam and Brussels with seat capacity aboard the high-speed Thalys train.</p>

<p><strong>Recent investments in sustainability</strong></p>

<p>KLM has invested in sustainable aviation fuel since 2009, but our pledge to procure 75,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel makes us the world&rsquo;s first airline to purchase biofuel on such a major scale. From 2022, this sustainable aviation fuel will be produced at the first European factory for sustainable aviation fuel, which will be built in Delftzijl.</p>

<p>We are also working with the Delft University of Technology to develop an aircraft that flies more economically due to its V shape, in which the cabin for passengers and crew, as well as the cargo hold and fuel tanks are all largely integrated into the wings of the aircraft. In October 2019, a flying scale model of this aircraft as well as a life-sized section of the cabin interior will be presented to the public during the KLM Experience Days at Schiphol.</p>

In recent months, KLM, Thalys and NS Dutch Railways have developed a long-term plan to reduce the number of flights between Brussels and Schiphol. The basic premise being that the product should match its current appeal to customers.</strong></p><p>KLM has regularly indicated that it is in favour of replacing short-haul flights with rail services, as long as trains fully match the speed, reliability and comfort that air travel offers passengers. The decision to reduce flight frequency from five to four flights a day on the Brussels-Schiphol route, in combination with the improved Air&Rail product aboard the Thalys, is a first step. KLM intends to gradually cut back the number of flights between Brussels and Schiphol. The Brussels-Schiphol route is used by passengers who catch connecting flights to intercontinental destinations at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.</p><p><strong>“Fly Responsibly” and slot restrictions</strong></p><p>This step is part of KLM’s commitment to “Fly Responsibly”, which aims to create a sustainable future for air transport, but it also reflects our commitment to the sector plan <a href="https://www.klmtakescare.com/sites/default/files/Smart%20and%20Sustainable_final.pdf">Smart and Sustainable</a>. Next to that, KLM is faced with slot restrictions at Schiphol. By replacing short-haul flights with rail services, scarce slots can be used for services to long-haul destinations. Rail services will maintain feeder traffic to Schiphol, while network quality improves thanks to the more varied range of available destinations.</p><p><strong>Improvement of the Air&Rail product</strong></p><p>Air&Rail is easy to book via KLM.com and travel agents. <p dir="ltr"><span><span>From hats to pleated skirts and from women&rsquo;s trousers to gloves &ndash; the KLM uniform has seen many faces since 1935. &ldquo;But it has always been elegant and stylish,&rdquo; says Cliff Muskiet, KLM purser and initiator of the airborne fashion show. This was clearly seen during the catwalk in the sky, when crew members showed off uniforms from 1957 to the present day. While the show mainly featured KLM clothing, there were also examples from KLC and NLM, all from Cliff&rsquo;s private collection. Cliff Muskiet is a true enthusiast, with a collection of 1,577 different uniforms in plastic boxes, stored at home, containing uniforms from 563 airlines.</span></span></p>

<p dir="ltr"><strong><span><span>Start the show</span></span></strong></p>

<p dir="ltr"><span><span>The passengers were informed about the unique fashion show at the start of the flight and they responded enthusiastically. Muskiet: &ldquo;At a certain point, the voice of our senior purser resounded through the cabin. He also works for a radio station and therefore had the perfect voice to accompany the models and tell the passengers about the history of the uniforms. Of course, safety on board came first throughout the event.&rdquo;</span></span></p>

<p dir="ltr"><span><span>Muskiet also chose all the garments for the show. &ldquo;It seemed like a great idea in the run-up to our 100</span><span><span>th</span></span> <span>anniversary to give our passengers an opportunity to see KLM&rsquo;s different uniforms over the years. But, in this case, worn by our own colleagues of course! Changing and taking care of the make-up was very exciting, given the limited amount of space available on board. All things considered, everything went on very well.&rdquo;</span></span></p>

<p dir="ltr"><strong><span><span>From Nina Ricci to Mart Visser</span></span></strong></p>

<p dir="ltr"><span><span>The fashion show in the sky tied in nicely with the World Fashion Week that kicks off next week in New York. But it also speaks for itself because there is much to tell about the history of the KLM uniforms. &ldquo;Few people know that we have only been wearing the current &ndash; and very recognisable &ndash; blue colour since 1971,&rdquo; says Cliff Muskiet. &ldquo;And famous designers such as Nina Ricci and Mart Visser have often worked on them. It&rsquo;s great that crew and passengers responded so enthusiastically. It was certainly a special event in the run-up to KLM&rsquo;s 100</span><span><span>th</span></span> <span>anniversary!&rdquo;</span></span></p>

]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>This applies to promotional tickets booked at World Deal Week fares as well as all other tickets. In other words, KLM will double any contribution made by anyone booking a ticket via KLM.nl or via a travel agent between 29 August and 16 September who compensates his or her share of CO2 emissions through the CO2ZERO compensation programme.</p>

<p>In order to draw passengers&rsquo; attention to the option of CO2 compensation, World Deal Week advertisements publicising a specific destination will also state the amount for compensation.</p>

<p>If, for example, you fly from Amsterdam to Johannesburg and want to compensate your share of the CO2 emissions, you will pay &euro;12. A flight from Amsterdam to Vienna would amount to &euro;2, while a flight from Amsterdam to Shanghai would clock up &euro;11 in compensation. As mentioned, KLM will invest the same amount on top of that throughout the promotional period.</p><p>The possibility of compensating for their share of CO2 emissions is also brought to the attention of passengers during the booking process. Tour operators and travel agents are also asked to bring the CO2 campaign to the attention of passengers. Passengers and travel agents can use My Trip to arrange CO2 compensation, even after the booking has been made.</p><p><strong>CO2ZERO</strong></p><p>KLM launched the CO2ZERO compensation programme in 2008. Since October 2017, KLM has been investing the compensation in a reforestation project in Panama known as the CO2OL Tropical Mix. This project involves converting former meadowlands into new forests. The project, which is certified according to the Global Goals&rsquo; Gold Standard, combines the conservation of biodiversity and the restoration of ecosystems with sustainable timber production (FSC certified) and sustainable cocoa production (UTZ certified). In addition, it generates local employment opportunities.</p><p><strong>Fly Responsibly</strong></p><p>With Fly Responsibly, KLM is committed to creating a more sustainable future for aviation. It includes everything KLM already does &ndash; and will do &ndash; to improve the sustainability of its operations. But real progress will only be achieved if the entire sector works together. <p><strong>Investing in CO2 reduction</strong></p>

<p>The project combines reforestation activities with cocoa production and forms part of KLM&rsquo;s<a href="https://klmtakescare.com/en/content/co2zero-s-facts-and-figures"> CO2ZERO </a>service. For the past ten years, this service has enabled passengers to compensate for their CO2 emissions by investing in a CO2 reduction project. In addition to CO2 storage, the CO<sub>2</sub>OL Tropical Mix project also provides for the small-scale, sustainable production of cocoa and wood, creating more jobs for the local population.</p>

<p><strong>UTZ-certified chocolate</strong></p>

<p>The CO<sub>2</sub>OL Tropical Mix farms in Bocas del Toro planted the cocoa trees in 2010. Now, almost ten years later, the cocoa fields of the project stretch out across the lower hills of the cocoa town in Panama. The chocolate derived from this project is UTZ certified, thanks to &ndash;among other things- sustainable management techniques, including planting shade trees and using multiple cacao species.</p>

<p><strong>From Panama to Belgium to WBC</strong></p>

<p>The chocolate company Barry Callebaut imports the cocoa from Bocas del Toro and turns it into different chocolate pastes in Belgium. The Dutch chocolatier Visser then heats, cools, shapes and packs the chocolate. It was greeted at Schiphol with a water salute.</p>

<p>KLM is the first European airline to operate this more sustainable and economical aircraft. The Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner has the same efficient engines as the 787-9. The combination of these engines with the use of lighter materials in the 787-10 means it produces lower carbon emissions and less noise.</p>

<p>The 787-10's design is highly sophisticated, with large windows and a spacious interior providing much more room and comfort.</p>

<p>This first KLM 787-10 Dreamliner will be deployed from 2 July on KLM services to Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam. KLM plans to have 15 Boeing 787-10s in its fleet by 2022.</p>

]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>The aviation industry accounts for 2 to 3 percent of the man-made CO2 emissions in the world. Due to growing population, trade and wealth, this percentage may increase in the future. For the last 14&nbsp;years already, the Air France-KLM Group has secured a top-3 position in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. In its pursuit to maintain this position, KLM has taken measures in the field of fleet renewal, development of its own carbon-offsetting scheme and more recently expressed its commitment to the development of the first <a href="https://news.klm.com/klm-skynrg-and-shv-energy-announce-project-first-european-plant-for-sustainable-aviation-fuel/">sustainable aviation fuel plant</a>&nbsp;and an innovative flight concept called the <a href="https://news.klm.com/klm-and-tu-delft-join-forces-to-make-aviation-more-sustainable/">Flying-V</a>.                         <title>KLM and TU Delft join forces to make aviation more sustainable</title>

                        <guid>https://news.klm.com/klm-and-tu-delft-join-forces-to-make-aviation-more-sustainable/</guid><pp:caseid>337740</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><strong>KLM President & CEO Pieter Elbers and Dean of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) Professor Henri Werij today signed a new cooperative agreement to work together on making aviation more sustainable at the IATA Annual General Meeting in Seoul. KLM will be contributing towards TU Delft&rsquo;s research into an innovative flight concept known as the &ldquo;Flying-V&rdquo;, which embraces an entirely different approach to aircraft design, in anticipation and support of sustainable long-distance flight in the future.</strong></p><p><span>The aircraft was originally conceptualised as a potential aircraft design for the future, but can be compared to today&rsquo;s most advanced aircraft, the Airbus A350. Although the plane is not as long as the A350, it does have the same wingspan. This will enable the Flying-V to use existing infrastructure at airports, such as gates and runways, without difficulty and the aircraft will also fit into the same hangar as the A350. What&rsquo;s more, the Flying-V will carry the same number of passengers &ndash; 314 in the standard configuration &ndash; and the same volume of cargo, 160m<sup>3.</sup> The Flying-V will be smaller than the A350, giving it less aerodynamic resistance.</span></p><p><span>The aircraft&rsquo;s v-shaped design will integrate the passenger cabin, the cargo hold and the fuel tanks in the wings. Its improved aerodynamic shape and reduced weight will mean it uses 20% less fuel than the Airbus A350, today&rsquo;s most advanced aircraft. A flying scale model and a full-size section of the interior of the Flying-V will be officially presented at the KLM Experience Days at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in October on the occasion of KLM&rsquo;s 100<sup>th</sup> anniversary.</span></p><p><strong><span>Improved passenger experience</span></strong></p><p><span>The Flying-V also provides researchers a unique opportunity to improve passenger experience in aircraft, from the seating layout in the wings, to the design of the seats and bathrooms. Everything has to be as lightweight as possible in order to maximise the efficiency gain the new aircraft shape provides. Passenger comfort is also taken into account.</span></p><p><strong>Fuel versus electric propulsion</strong></p><p>The Flying-V is propelled by the most fuel-efficient turbofan engines that currently exist. In its present design it still flies on kerosene, but it can easily be adapted to make use of innovations in the propulsion system &ndash; by using electrically-boosted turbofans for example.</p>]]></description><pp:quotes><pp:quote>

]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>These are some of the results achieved by KLM in 2018:</p>

<p><strong>1,318 tonnes of sustainable biofuel purchased</strong><br />
All of KLM&rsquo;s flights from Angeles to Amsterdam have been partly fuelled using biofuel since 2016. This means that up to and including 2018, around 1,500 flights have been powered by a biofuel mix. In May 2018, KLM launched its most sustainable route V&auml;xj&ouml;. For this purpose, 5% biofuel was purchased and the remaining CO2 emissions compensated. At this point in time, KLM is the only European airline operating intercontinental flights using sustainable biofuel. And, as announced on the 27<sup>th</sup> of May, KLM, SkyNRG and SHV Energy have joined forces to establish the<a href="https://nieuws.klm.com/klm-skynrg-en-shv-energy-lanceren-project-voor-eerste-europese-fabriek-voor-duurzame-kerosine/"> first European production facility for sustainable aircraft fuel </a>(SAF).</p>

<p><strong>17% fewer CO2 emissions</strong><br />
In 2018, CO2 emissions per passenger were reduced by 17.3% compared to 2011. The target for 2020 is to reduce our CO2 emissions per passenger by 20% compared to 2011. KLM distinguishes three pillars to reduce its CO2 flight footprint:</p>

<ul>
<li>reduce fuel consumption;</li>
<li>replace fossil fuel and compensate for CO2 emissions;</li>
<li>fleet renewal. At present, fleet renewal is contributing most: new aircraft are more fuel-efficient and therefore emit less CO2.</li>
</ul>

<p>Coupled with measures adopted by KLM to promote more efficient flight operations, the new aircraft generate fuel savings of between 35% and 40%. We will be taking another significant step towards achieving our target with our current order of new Dreamliners.</p>

<p><strong>9.4 million sustainable sandwiches served on board European flights</strong><br />
KLM aims to offer sustainable catering products by making product choices with integrity. We choose products that have the least possible impact on the environment, support fair trade and are produced in an animal-friendly manner. Our catering policy applies to all flights operated out of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Wherever possible, our catering also includes sustainable products from our destinations.</p>

<p><strong>18% reduction in CO2 emissions from ground processes</strong><br />
By 2020, KLM aims to reduce CO2 emissions from ground processes by 20% compared to 2011. This reduction will be achieved by using less electricity, gas and fuel. By the end of 2018, CO2 emissions from operational processes on the ground had been reduced by 18% compared to 2011. One of the areas we are focusing on relates to the further replacement of vehicles for ground handling with electrical alternatives. At present, 49% of KLM&rsquo;s ground handling equipment is electric and 12% hybrid.</p>

<p>We are also continually on the lookout for opportunities to simply use less energy. As such, gas and electricity consumption has fallen by 19% since 2011.</p>

<p><strong>Around 312 hectares of tropical forest created by close to 90,000 passengers through CO2ZERO</strong><br />
In 2018, close to 90,000 passengers flew CO2 neutral thanks to KLM&rsquo;s CO2ZERO compensation service. This represents an increase of almost 50% compared to 2017. The contribution generated by CO2ZERO is invested in a reforestation project in Panama called CO2OL Tropical Mix. This project has been recognised with a Gold Standard for the Global Goals certificate, taking former meadowlands and transforming them into new mixed forests and subsequently maintaining them. The project has both a positive impact on the environment and creates jobs.</p>

<p><strong>9% less waste compared to 2011</strong><br />
In 2018, the volume of waste was reduced by 9% and 28% was recycled. Waste on board was reduced by 19% per passenger. Due to strict legislation governing food safety, we can recycle practic<strong>all</strong>y nothing on intercontinental flights, while 73% of waste from ground operations is recycled! By 2030, KLM aims to reduce the volume of waste by 50% compared to 2011.</p>

<p><strong>New sustainability ambitions formulated for 2030</strong></p>

<p>KLM is well on the way to achieving its 2020 targets and is already looking further ahead. Towards 2030, the KLM Group aims to reduce its total CO2 emissions by 15% compared to 2005. That is a reduction of 50% CO2 per passenger-kilometer compared to 2005. We also set the ambition to realize a CO2 neutral ground operation and to reduce the residual waste by 50% compared to 2011.</p>
