KLM resumes flying over Iran and Iraq

Safety is awarded the highest priority at KLM. KLM uses a security management system to analyse risks and thus determine safe flight paths. Substantiated by such analyses, it is once again safe to fly over Iran and Iraq. This decision is also based on the information shared within the Dutch group of experts that unites all Dutch airlines, the intelligence services, the NCTV counter-terrorism unit, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. The British and German governments have also issued a notice to airmen (NOTAM), stating that commercial airlines can once again fly safely over Iran and Iraq. Furthermore, on 16 January 2020, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued a notification that it would be safe to fly above Iran at an altitude of more than 25,000 feet (7,620 metres).

KLM’s new flight safety film features Delftware animation

Delftware craftsmanship
KLM’s new flight safety film features more than 1,000 tiles, specially drawn, animated and painted with the utmost precision for this specific purpose. The entire script was first translated into handmade Delftware drawings, which were then painted onto the tiles. Stop-motion video animation was then used to film KLM’s flight safety instructions for passengers, tile by tile.

Dutch design
Just like the new flight safety film, KLM’s new Economy Class catering concept “Tasty Blue” was also inspired by Delftware design. The trolleys, placemats, cutlery sleeves, paper boxes and cups all feature Delftware details or elements. This ties in perfectly with KLM’s Delftware miniature houses, which have been presented to World Business Class passengers since the 1950s. The World Business Class tableware and new interior of the fleet were also created by Dutch designers. In addition, KLM has a long tradition of serving its World Business Class passengers meals created by leading Dutch chefs. In so doing, KLM reaffirms its pride in its Dutch roots and international allure.

The flight safety film and as well as the “making of” can be viewed at klm.com/flightsafety. The film and the Delftware tiles will also be on display at the Dutch Design week in Eindhoven from 17 to 25 October.

The safety instructions are updated in line with the latest rules and regulations.

Statement Safety Information Bulletin EASA 9 October

In it, EASA informed (*) national aviation authorities and airlines about military activity in the airspace above the Caspian Sea, Iran and Iraq. The Safety Information Bulletin also reported that the military equipment is being deployed below the flight paths used by commercial airlines. Consequently, EASA did not make any specific recommendations in this bulletin.

Safety is KLM’s chief priority. KLM is continually monitoring the situation in the area. The current military activity does not present an increased risk for KLM operations in the area. KLM has therefore decided not to adjust operations. Naturally, KLM will closely monitor the situation.

KLM does not currently fly over Iraq and Syria and only at a safe altitude over Iran.
