This challenge is initiated by SkyTeam and dares airlines to conduct their operations as efficiently and with as little environmental impact as possible. The results of these tests are shared among the participating airlines, with the aim of sharing knowledge and helping the airlines carry out their activities with a lower environmental impact.
</pp:summary>

KLM acknowledges its impact on the environment and climate and sees that there are limits to what our planet can handle. Action is needed to operate within these limits. By testing various innovations during flight operations and on board, KLM evaluates their outcomes with the goal of scaling them up and implementing them as standard practices.

Before the flight
Both during preparation and during the flight, KLM tested various initiatives. In terms of cargo transport, KLM hopes to eventually replace all cargo pallets with lightweight cardboard alternatives. This change saves 150kg of material per flight needed for cargo transport. KLM hopes to save nearly 0.05% CO2 (6 kilotons) annually through this measure (Scope 1 and 3). Additionally, as many electric ground processes as possible are used, and the aircraft is towed to the runway, saving 400 kg of fuel. This tests how it works to tow an aircraft further towards the runway in an operational environment so that the engines can start later.

Optimization of loading weight can also help reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. By distributing the weight on board as optimally as possible, a small lift under the nose is created, resulting in less air resistance and thus a more efficient flight.

Passengers in World Business Class are asked to pre-order their meals. This helps KLM to take exactly the amount of food needed for the flight on board, reducing food waste. Passengers are also encouraged to pack lightly.

KLM has also started advising passengers not to print their boarding passes. This has led to an 84% reduction in printed boarding passes since May 2024.

Onboard initiatives
During the flight, lighter tableware is used in World Business Class, a result of the Challenge in 2022. This saves 5 kg per flight, resulting in an annual saving of 150 tons of CO2 emissions for the entire KLM fleet. Additionally, World Business Class passengers receive a lighter 3D-printed KLM house instead of the regular porcelain KLM houses.

Passengers can also purchase alternative fuel (SAF) onboard the flight, which is normally only available beforehand. The SAF purchased additionally is not on the flight to Singapore but will be used by KLM later. The cabin crew wears a new uniform made from more sustainable fabric from recycled PET and with more stretch, providing more comfort while working on board. The cabin crew also wears the previously implemented KLM sneakers from Filling Pieces.

The Aviation Challenge
The Aviation Challenge is inspired by the historic World’s Greatest Air Race, which ran from London to Melbourne in 1934. The race aimed to make the world more accessible and connect people. Today, the challenges for aviation are no longer in bridging distances but in making operations more sustainable. SkyTeam challenges the participating airlines to conduct regular, commercial flights with as little environmental impact as possible.

Press Release,Aviation Challenge,sustainability

The eighteen guests received a trial electric flying lesson aboard a Pipistrel Velis Electro, supervised by instructors from the E-Flight Academy. The 18 training flights, which operated between Lelystad Airport and Schiphol-Oost over the course of two days, offered KLM unique insight into the entire system of electric flight logistics and the challenges it presents. “To make air transport more sustainable, we have to test new technologies and innovations in practice. The things we do today on a small scale with the resources we have now, may prove to be important drivers of scalability in these applications in the future,” said Jolanda Stevens, program manager for Zero Emission Aviation at KLM.
</pp:summary>

This initiative came from the Electric Flying Connection (EFC) in collaboration with instructors from E-Flight Academy. “This unique event aims to give all relevant stakeholders an opportunity to experience electric flight and what this innovation could mean for them in practical terms. We are pleased that KLM has joined us in taking this step. We already have plans for future, Benelux-wide editions of this event,” said Jurjen de Jong, chairman of EFC.

Schiphol was a logical starting point because it is KLM’s home base. As the range of the Pipistrel is limited, only four destination airports were possible options. Lelystad Airport was chosen because it is easily accessible, with excellent recharging facilities, top-notch runways, and a fully functioning air traffic control centre.

Insight into logistics and infrastructure

KLM has partnered with EFC and the E-Flight Academy to acquire knowledge about electric flight and to ascertain what impact this technology will have on KLM’s logistics and infrastructure needs. Jolanda Stevens: “Electric flight will also affect flight handling. Electric aircraft have to be recharged, which takes time, and we will need to cooperate with Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Air Traffic Control the Netherlands to ensure that this mode of flying is not only safe, but also provided with the correct power supply. This two-day event has helped us gain more insight into such matters."

Zero Emission Aviation: backing various technologies simultaneously

The Pipistrel Velis Electro is the world’s first and only certified electric aircraft. The two-seater plane has a flight range of 50 minutes (plus 10 minutes reserve). This means it will not play a part in serving KLM’s network of destinations. However, KLM is researching how electric flight may be incorporated into future operations. Various market experts predict that by 2035 there may be an electric aircraft that can carry 50 to 100 passengers, with a range of 90 minutes (i.e. 400-750 kilometres). The batteries required for such flights are heavy, which is why it would be unrealistic to develop larger aircraft for longer routes, such as between Amsterdam and New York. Stevens: “Looking at the future of zero-emission flights, KLM is backing different technologies and innovations simultaneously. With our sector partners at home and abroad, we’re researching flights powered by electricity, hydrogen and hybrid forms, and assessing how these developments can be accelerated.”

KLM’s climate strategy

The responsibilities attached to operating an airline are immense. To reduce our impact on the environment, we need to ensure that future operations are cleaner, quieter, and more fuel-efficient. The route to Zero Emission Aviation is an essential element of our climate strategy. A great deal of work still needs to be done to ensure the success of new technologies, with every piece of the puzzle falling into place. This includes new aircraft, different infrastructure, changes to the way airspace is used, adjustments to airline operations, and, at the heart of it all, the availability of green energy. Intensive cooperation between the players in the value chain is vital, making this an interesting journey with many obstacles and uncertainties. Nevertheless, KLM is doing its utmost to reduce CO2 emissions with measures that are currently available, which include upscaling the production and use of sustainable aviation fuel and reducing fuel consumption through fleet renewal and increased operational efficiency. We must also continue to improve the integration of different modes of transport, such as air-rail.

About the Electric Flying Connection

The Electric Flying Connection (EFC) is a trade association for electric flight and already has more than 50 members, representing a wide array of companies in the electric flight ecosystem, including airlines (such as KLM), manufacturers of electric aircraft, and aircraft components, flight academies, organizations developing recharging infrastructure, airports and more. The main objective of the EFC is to forge connections between the right, relevant players within the value chain, with a view to advancing the sustainability of air transport.

Pictures: Arnoud Raeven

klm,EFC,Pipistrel Velis Electro,Zero Emission Aviation,Press Release,electric flying,geluid

KLM has recognised a growing demand for this option among certain customers and believes that its introduction is in line with efforts to become more inclusive and to deliver a more personalised customer experience.

KLM has initially introduced this new feature for customers in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States. Customers booking their tickets in these countries can now specify that they identify as non-binary. Customers may also ask to forgo the courtesy title altogether and be addressed by name only. If a courtesy title cannot be omitted entirely, the letter “X” will be used in the salutation for these customers. Only adults will have the option of choosing the gender-neutral form of address.

This is only one of a number of steps KLM is taking to move towards a more personalised and gender-neutral approach to customers. For example, customers who have a KLM account or who are members of the Flying Blue loyalty programme can already choose a gender-neutral form of address. Alternative forms of address are being used in other settings as well. Some time ago, KLM started using “passengers” instead of “ladies and gentlemen” in its inflight announcements, for instance. Other processes, including check-in, will be adapted later this year.

By making these changes, KLM is aligning with the experience of passengers booking through partner airlines, such as US-based Delta Air Lines and UK-based Virgin Atlantic, which introduced alternative forms of address in their booking procedures last year. Such changes are also consistent with the policies of the IATA, the global airline industry association.

KLM believes in the power of diversity and inclusion. Our customers come from every corner of the earth and from diverse cultural backgrounds, giving them differing perspectives and requirements. It is very important to KLM that each and every customer feels personally valued and respected. Introducing gender-neutral forms of address should help achieve this and deliver the ideal customer experience to which KLM aspires.

© KLM/Arnoud Raeven

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

This year’s miniature is a replica of a house in a very special location: the Ecury family home on Aruba. The island will be marking a centenary of aviation next year and the Ecury House – now part of the National Archaeological Museum of Aruba – is close to the site where the first aircraft landed. Moreover, the Ecury family played a significant role in the development of aviation on the island. KLM first flew to Aruba almost ninety years ago and made the island its operational hub for scheduled services across the Caribbean. KLM began operating scheduled services between Amsterdam and Aruba in 1974 and now operates daily flights between the two.

KLM President & CEO Marjan Rintel is on Aruba and will present the latest Delftware miniature to Agustin Vrolijk, Acting Governor of Aruba, and the Ecury family, tonight at 20:00 local time.

Agustin Vrolijk, acting Governor of Aruba: I congratulate KLM on its hundred-third anniversary. We are extremely proud of our cultural heritage and are therefore very honored that this iconic mansion, the Ecury complex, has been chosen as KLM's next miniature house. We are deeply honored that Aruba's cultural heritage will now travel to all KLM destinations worldwide.

Marjan Rintel, CEO and President of KLM: “I don't know whether the founders of KLM could have imagined back in 1919 that we would still be celebrating the airline’s anniversary 103 years later. This year we are doing so on lovely Aruba, a KLM destination for almost fifty years, where we are kicking off celebrations today marking a centenary of aviation on the island. KLM has had many ups and downs over the past century, but we’ve always marked our anniversary on 7 October, because we want to keep celebrating that KLM is a wonderful company that connects the Netherlands with the world. We should be proud of that.”

The Ecury House
The house is located in Oranjestad and was built in 1929, close to the site where the first aircraft landed on the island almost 100 years ago. It was the home of the esteemed Ecury family, prominent in society and business. Son Nicasio “Dundun” Ecury built his business empire from here and played an important role in the development of aviation on the island. His son, Boy Ecury, studied in the Netherlands and became a resistance hero during the Second World War. He was betrayed and executed in 1944.

The Ecury House has been part of the National Archaeological Museum of Aruba since 2009 and forms the heart of the museum. It was built in 1929 and features a facade with classical elements, Caribbean gingerbread detailing and local decorative elements. This imposing and harmonious ensemble is a unique creation by the architect Dada Picus.

1934: KLM lands on Aruba for the first time
In December 1934, a triple-engine KLM Fokker F-XVIII, christened “the Snip”, flew from Amsterdam to Curaçao in seven days, stopping in Marseille, Alicante, Casablanca, Porto Praia, Paramaribo and La Guaria. This was KLM's very first transatlantic flight and it was only possible because of the various stopovers, modifications to the aircraft's cabin and the absence of passengers. The purpose of the flight was to station an aircraft in the Antilles. The Snip touched down on Aruba for the first time on 23 December. Scheduled service between Curaçao and Aruba began on 19 January 1935, which was the first flight operated by KLM’s West-Indian Branch (WIB). KLM began operating scheduled direct service between Amsterdam and Aruba on 11 February 1974.

Centenary of aviation on Aruba
Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the first flight’s arrival on Aruba. Since then, the airline industry has connected Aruba – also known as “One Happy Island” – with the rest of the world and fuelled its local economy, which now revolves largely around tourism. Aruba Airport welcomes around 2.5 million passengers annually and has grown significantly over time.

About the KLM Delftware miniature houses
Since the 1950s, KLM has been presenting Delftware miniature houses filled with Bols Dutch genever to World Business Class passengers on intercontinental flights. The miniatures are replicas of historic buildings in the Netherlands and abroad and are sought-after collectors' items. Since 1994, KLM has added a new miniature to its collection every year on the anniversary of its founding, 7 October.

This is the second time in KLM's history that a Delftware miniature is based on a building outside the Netherlands. On KLM's 85th anniversary, the airline presented a replica of the distinctive Penha Building in Curaçao.

Evelyn Wever-Croes, prime minister of Aruba: “At Schelpstraat No. 42, there is a house with the year “Año 1929” on the façade. The rear of this house borders on the Noordstraat (now known as John G. Emanstraat). When this house was build in the 1929, its the owners, the Ecury family, could not have guessed that one of the 13 children born there would end up becoming a war hero, far from home. Even before it was restored to its former glory, the Ecury House was always iconic. One always admired it in passing. Everyone knew the house. We, the younger generation, feel a bond with the history of this house, because we know the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the original occupants. The Ecury House forms a single entity with the adjacent Cas di Mamachi, which dates from 1911. However, the Ecury House, with its impressive façade and colonnade, is visually dominant. It casts an indelible image on one’s retina.”

Ronella Croes, CEO, Aruba Tourism Authority: “We are immensely proud that KLM has based its latest miniature house on a building on Aruba, more so because the Ecury family home was chosen. Doing so acknowledges the productive relationship we have had with KLM for many decades, as well as our shared history. Thanks in part to KLM, international tourism is thriving here, allowing us to build invaluable relationships. Choosing the Ecury family home as the model for its Delftware miniature house also spotlights our cultural heritage and brings it to the attention of a wider public. We hope this will encourage current and potential travellers to come to Aruba and explore our unique Caribbean culture.”

Joost Meijs, CEO, Queen Beatrix International Airport Aruba: “I couldn’t imagine a better way to kick off next year’s anniversary, celebrating 100 years of aviation on Aruba, than with this gift from KLM; adding an Aruban house to their collection of Delftware miniatures. This miniature marks KLM's 103rd anniversary and is a great prelude to the centenary celebrations in 2023, which will involve the entire community. We are very proud that KLM has chosen the Ecury House, one of Aruba's most cherished heritage sites. It will add an Aruban flavour to KLM's collection of miniature houses, safeguard and promote the importance of our cultural heritage, and help us achieve our cultural aim of sustainable development on the island.”

Anne Witsenburg, Director, Monuments Fund of Aruba: “It has long been the wish of Monuments Fund Aruba that KLM would model one of its miniatures on a building in Aruba. We feel deeply honoured that it has chosen such a fine historic landmark to showcase in this special way. The house has features of many different styles of architecture, including that of the Netherlands. KLM’s 103rd miniature house highlights the ties within the Kingdom and our shared past. We have studied the history of aviation on Aruba and recognise that it has brought us freedom and economic progress. We are grateful that KLM provides us with a daily physical connection with the Netherlands and that it has made our wish come true.”

Press Release,Aruba,klm,Huisje 103,Ecury huis,persbericht,house 103

KLM to launch new Economy Class service

At the start of an intercontinental flight, Economy Class passengers will receive a bottle of water, a refreshing towel and earphones, which means they can immediately get set for their journey. After this welcome service, passengers will be offered an extended choice of meals on flights out of Amsterdam.

</pp:summary>

On intercontinental daytime flights out of Amsterdam, the new meal service will include a choice of warm dishes, a large, well-filled salad, and a dessert. On medium-range and longer intercontinental flights the selection of snacks will be further extended with ice-creams, sweets, and savoury snacks. Passengers will also be welcome to collect these snacks in the galley.

Service schedule on intercontinental flights
The new service will be introduced on the following nine destinations on 1 July 2018: Bonaire (via Aruba), Entebbe (via Kigali), Fortaleza, Osaka, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Seoul, Rio de Janeiro and Houston. From the start of our winter schedule on 28 October, the service will be available on all our intercontinental flights. The flights are subdivided into daytime and night-time flights, but also into three different distance zones, namely:

Short-range intercontinental flights;

Medium-range intercontinental flights;

Long-range intercontinental flights.

The overall service will be adjusted per zone, so that it best coincides with the biorhythms of passengers. Passengers will, as always, be served a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages aboard every flight.

Why this new Economy Class service?
The new collective labour agreement for our cabin crew includes a clause that one less crewmember will be assigned on many intercontinental flights. Consequently, a more efficient Economy Class service is required. By better utilising the space on meal trays, trolleys can be stocked with more trays, ensuring that passengers are served more quickly. The new service is also more in line with passengers’ wishes, in that the amount of food and drinks served remains the same, while the quality of the service improves.

Sustainable catering
KLM strives to ensure that its inflight catering is as sustainable as possible. On all flights, UTZ-certified or Fairtrade chocolate and coffee is served. On all flights out of Amsterdam, KLM exclusively serves chicken and egg products that are certified and have been produced in an animal-friendly manner. For these efforts, KLM has won the Good Egg Award and the Good Chicken Award. Wherever possible, sustainable catering is provided on flights to Amsterdam as well.

The new intercontinental Economy Class concept has also been devised with sustainability in mind. The new trays and cutlery are lighter than before, which helps to reduce CO2 emissions. In addition, the paper placemat on the tray has been removed, which means millions fewer sheets of paper are required annually.

klm,economy class,Maaltijdservice,Press Release,new,Customer Satisfaction,Quality,Intercontinental Flights

This means KLM not only purchases sustainable biojet fuel for the route, it also compensates the total remaining carbon dioxide emissions of all flights through KLM's CO2ZERO service.

</pp:summary>

Biojet fuel on the Växjö route
KLM has been using sustainable biojet fuel since 2009 and uses it in part for all flights from Los Angeles because it is the only place with a refinery. To make flights to Växjö as sustainable as possible, KLM is investing in 120,000 litres of biojet fuel per year to the new Swedish destination. KLM guarantees that it will purchase 5% biojet fuel based on all flights to and from Växjö. By expanding the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme in Sweden, local companies will be able to invest in sustainable biojet fuel.

Sustainable biojet fuel contributes significantly to making aviation more sustainable, but is still two to three times more expensive than fossil fuel. Södra, Sweden’s largest cooperative of forest owners, based in Växjö, will be the first non-Dutch partner in the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme. Together with Södra and the City of Växjö, KLM and SkyNRG will also investigate the feasibility of producing biojet fuel in the region around Växjö.

CO2 compensation on the Växjö route
As it is not yet possible to fly entirely on sustainable biojet fuel, KLM and Växjö Småland Airport are joining forces to pay jointly for the total CO2 compensation for flights to and from Växjö. The money will go to the reforestation initiative CO2OL Tropical Mix in Panama, a ‘Gold Standard for the Global Goals’ project. The project converts degraded meadows into mixed forests by planting a mix of native tree species and some exotic species. In addition, the project’s activities create long-term employment thereby providing a sustainable source of income for the local population.

Växjö
Växjö is the capital of the Kronoberg region located in the south of Sweden. The city has an entrepreneurial climate and a renowned university. It is surrounded by beautiful nature, offers a wide range of outdoor activities, and has an excellent gastronomic reputation.

This makes Växjö – our most sustainable destination – a valuable addition to the KLM network. This strengthens KLM’s position as the most important European carrier operating in the Brazilian market, for both business travel and leisure. In addition to daily services to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, this thrice weekly service to Fortaleza brings to 17 KLM’s total weekly frequency to Brazil. Fortaleza is strategically placed as an entry point to Europe and important regions in Brazil.
<pp:caseid>271596</pp:caseid><pp:summary>
Today, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines welcomed its twelfth Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, with the registration PH-BHO, at Schiphol Airport. This morning the aircraft arrived from Seattle (USA). It will bear the name Orchidee – Dutch for “Orchid.”

</pp:summary>

KLM’s Dreamliners are named after flowers or flowering plants, a typical Dutch export product which suits KLM well. Other B787s have received names such as Zonnebloem (Sunflower), Anjer (Carnation), Dahlia, Lavendel (Lavender), and Margriet (Daisy). The eleventh Dreamliner, delivered last January, bears the name Morgenster (Morning Star).

KLM invests in fleet renewal
Once again in 2018, KLM will continue to invest in the renewal of its fleet to meet its customers’ needs and wishes. The Orchidee is the second Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to arrive in 2018. KLM will take possession of its next Dreamliner in August.

The Boeing 787 creates less ambient noise, consumes less fuel, and gives off fewer carbon dioxide emissions. It brings us ever closer to our aim to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% in 2020 compared to 2011. The Dreamliner is built mainly of carbon fibre composite which can be cut easily, so the manufacturing process creates less waste.

It also offers numerous advantages in terms of passenger comfort. The increased cabin air pressure helps passengers to arrive at their destination feeling well rested. And all passengers have access to WiFi during the flight.

klm,boeing,dreamliner,Arrival,Orchidee,schiphol,Press Release,fleet,Orchid,persbericht

These new aircraft offer passengers greater comfort and more space, thereby helping to create memorable travel experiences.

The Embraer aircraft also perfectly coincide with KLM’s sustainability policy. Owing to their advanced features, the Embraer jets burn less fuel, which means they emit less CO2. The fuel consumption of the new E175+ aircraft is an impressive 22% lower than that of the Fokker 70s they replaced.

Europe’s largest Embraer fleet
KLM Cityhopper has the largest Embraer fleet in Europe. Since KLC phased out its last Fokker aircraft, its fleet has consisted entirely of Embraers. KLM currently uses its “E-jets” to operate around 300 short-haul flights a day, mostly to European business destinations. The E190 has 100 seats, while the E175+ has 88 seats.

With the three new arrivals, the fleet will consist of a total of 48 aircraft.
