KLM to launch new Economy Class service

<pp:caseid>287925</pp:caseid><pp:summary>
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will offer a new Economy Class service concept aboard its intercontinental flights. At the start of an intercontinental flight, Economy Class passengers will receive a bottle of water, a refreshing towel and earphones, which means they can immediately get set for their journey. After this welcome service, passengers will be offered an extended choice of meals on flights out of Amsterdam.

</pp:summary>

On intercontinental daytime flights out of Amsterdam, the new meal service will include a choice of warm dishes, a large, well-filled salad, and a dessert. On medium-range and longer intercontinental flights the selection of snacks will be further extended with ice-creams, sweets, and savoury snacks. Passengers will also be welcome to collect these snacks in the galley.

Service schedule on intercontinental flights
The new service will be introduced on the following nine destinations on 1 July 2018: Bonaire (via Aruba), Entebbe (via Kigali), Fortaleza, Osaka, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Seoul, Rio de Janeiro and Houston. From the start of our winter schedule on 28 October, the service will be available on all our intercontinental flights. The flights are subdivided into daytime and night-time flights, but also into three different distance zones, namely:

Short-range intercontinental flights;

Medium-range intercontinental flights;

Long-range intercontinental flights.

The overall service will be adjusted per zone, so that it best coincides with the biorhythms of passengers. Passengers will, as always, be served a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages aboard every flight.

Why this new Economy Class service?
The new collective labour agreement for our cabin crew includes a clause that one less crewmember will be assigned on many intercontinental flights. Consequently, a more efficient Economy Class service is required. By better utilising the space on meal trays, trolleys can be stocked with more trays, ensuring that passengers are served more quickly. The new service is also more in line with passengers’ wishes, in that the amount of food and drinks served remains the same, while the quality of the service improves.

Sustainable catering
KLM strives to ensure that its inflight catering is as sustainable as possible. On all flights, UTZ-certified or Fairtrade chocolate and coffee is served. On all flights out of Amsterdam, KLM exclusively serves chicken and egg products that are certified and have been produced in an animal-friendly manner. For these efforts, KLM has won the Good Egg Award and the Good Chicken Award. Wherever possible, sustainable catering is provided on flights to Amsterdam as well.

The new intercontinental Economy Class concept has also been devised with sustainability in mind. The new trays and cutlery are lighter than before, which helps to reduce CO2 emissions. In addition, the paper placemat on the tray has been removed, which means millions fewer sheets of paper are required annually.

klm,economy class,Maaltijdservice,Press Release,new,Customer Satisfaction,Quality,Intercontinental Flights

About Minneapolis
Minneapolis is the largest city in the American state of Minnesota and has a population of around 400,000. This city has a unique system of skyways. These glass-enclosed pedestrian bridges link the buildings in the centre of Minneapolis, allowing you to walk through the city while sheltering from the winter cold or summer heat. The city is famous for the Minneapolis Sound. This pop music trend, pioneered by Prince, created a furore in the 1980s. The city also boasts numerous nightclubs, modern art, and a large number of theatres, which are barely surpassed by New York. In terms of commerce, Minneapolis is a centre for medical industries and financial institutions.

KLM’s flights from Oslo to be powered by new biofuel

<pp:caseid>111523</pp:caseid><pp:summary>
This spring, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will start a new series of flights from Oslo to Amsterdam powered by biofuel. The biofuel forms part of an ITAKA* project, providing sustainable fuel for worldwide’s first biojet supply via hydrant system at Oslo Airport. The biojet supply is funded by the European Commission and facilitated by SkyNRG.

With effect from today, biofuel will for the first time be available via hydrant instead of the usual refuelling truck and will use the existing infrastructure at Oslo airport. This is the result of cooperation between Air BP and Avinor, the Norwegian airport operator at Oslo Airport Gardermoen.

</pp:summary>

In addition to using biofuel from the hydrant system, some of the biofuel for KLM will be delivered by refuelling trucks. In cooperation with Embraer, biofuel efficiency will be assessed in comparison with kerosene. KLM previously conducted similar tests in cooperation with Boeing and Airbus.

KLM’s current aim is to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% in 2020 (compared to 2011 levels) through fleet renewal, using sustainable biofuel and increasing flight efficiency. KLM is best in class when it comes to fuel efficiency and is leading in using sustainable biofuel.

The flights have also been made possible by the partners of the Corporate BioFuel programme, which this week expanded to include ABN AMRO. The corporations that participate in the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme pay a surcharge that covers the price difference between sustainable biofuel and traditional kerosene. This investment is fully utilised by KLM to purchase sustainable biofuel, which is added to the fuel pumped into KLM aircraft at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and elsewhere, like Oslo. Consequently, the participating corporations reduce CO2 emissions resulting from their business travel, but also contribute to the further development of the biofuel market.
<pp:caseid>61564</pp:caseid><pp:summary>
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has welcomed its latest Boeing 777-300, which flew in from Seattle to Schiphol last Saturday.

KLM traditionally names this aircraft type after world heritage sites and nature reserves, with past examples including Iguazu Falls and Mount Kilimanjaro. KLM’s 24th Boeing 777, registration number PH-BVN, has been named “Tijuca National Park”. This national park is located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and covers a surface area of 32km².

</pp:summary>

This new Boeing is the first 777-300ER to be fitted with the new economy and business class configuration and to sport the new KLM livery. The PH-BVO, which will follow at the end of April, will also be fitted with the new configuration and livery. This will take the B777 fleet up to 25 aircraft.

New cabin interior Economy Class
The new economy class seats offer passengers more legroom. The smart design of the new economy class seats creates extra legroom, offering greater comfort. And there’s more; the ergonomically optimised headrest offers better neck support. Specially designed cushions, sustainable high-density materials and a power socket offer passengers relaxation and greater control. The fact that the new seats are the lightest in their class is yet another improvement. Less weight generates fuel savings, which will in turn reduce CO2 emissions.

Inflight entertainment system
The new cabin interior also boasts a new inflight entertainment system, offering bigger 9‑inch HD touch screens, interactive 3D-cards and the option of communicating with fellow passengers seated elsewhere in the plan using “seat chat”. The inflight entertainment system offers access to more than 150 films and 200 TV programmes in numerous languages, and includes a large number of local films.

Luxurious personal space in World Business Class
In tandem with the introduction of the new economy class, KLM also enhanced its new World Business Class in the Boeing 777. The key element here is the new full-flat seat. The way in which the new seats are positioned in the cabin, coupled with a range of smart design choices, now offer maximum privacy during sleep or work time. Aspects including warmer colours – that differ for each seat – and ample storage space ensure optimal comfort and more personal space for passengers. Combined with bigger, softer cushions and new luxurious blankets, the new World Business Class exudes a warm and friendly look & feel. Personal 16-inch screens operated using touch-screen handsets serve to complete the luxurious World Business Class experience. And a dual-screen experience is also offered, with passengers being able to play games and/or chat while watching a film.

777-300,boeing,klm,new

</pp:boilerplate>

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines starts weekly flights from John F. Kennedy Airport to Schiphol using sustainable biofuel. Flight KL642 is operated by a Boeing 777-200 every Thursday.

This is the result of a joint effort and expanded cooperation between KLM, Schiphol Group, Delta Air Lines, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and by contributions of KLM’s partners in the Corporate BioFuel Program. Cooperation is a priority for the future of sustainable biofuel in the aviation industry. By this initiative KLM demonstrates that sustainable biofuel in the airline industry is here to stay.

In addition to the participation in KLM’s BioFuel program, Schiphol Group has invested in the KLM flights using sustainable biofuel. The series of biofuel flights - from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport - will start on 8 March with a flight from Schiphol to JFK. The sustainable fuel is obtained from used cooking oil.

In June 2012, KLM’s longest biofuel flight ever travelled from Amsterdam to Rio de Janeiro. The flights to New York are the next step and proofs KLM’s pioneering role in the development of sustainable biofuel.

New Biofuel Partners
KLM has been working with the World Wide Fund for Nature the Netherlands (WWF-NL) since 2007. The cooperation aims to stimulate a more sustainable airline industry by reducing CO2 emissions, increasing fuel efficiency, and investing in innovations such as sustainable biofuel.

Last year KLM launched the world’s first biofuel proposition for contracted corporate accounts. This will allow them to fly on sustainable biofuel for a portion of their total flight volume, or on specific routes, thereby stimulating the further development of biofuels and reducing the aviation industry’s carbon footprint. The number of partners in the programme has more than doubled to fifteen. Since this year it includes the City of Amsterdam, Loyens & Loeff, PGGM, FMO, Delta Air Lines, Siemens, TomTom and CBRE Global Investors. They follow initial customers such as Ahold, Accenture, DSM, Heineken, Nike, Philips and Schiphol Group who have been supporting KLM’s BioFuel programme since June of 2012.

Sustainable Biofuel
KLM’s biofuel is supplied by SkyNRG, a company which KLM founded 2009 together with ARGOS (North Sea Petroleum) and Spring Associates. SkyNRG is now the world’s market leader for sustainable kerosene, supplying more than fifteen carriers worldwide and the operating partner in the KLM’s BioFuel program. For the JFK International Airport to Schiphol Amsterdam Airport route, SkyNRG is supported by its longstanding US Partner EPIC Aviation LLC to distribute the fuel.

For KLM biofuel is only an option if it does not have a negative impact on biodiversity, local development and/or the local food supply. As of March 2013, SkyNRG is the first fully certified renewable jet fuel supply chain by RSB (Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels).

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>
