<pp:caseid>680502</pp:caseid>

Every week, more than a million people fly from Schiphol to their destinations for vacation, work, study, or family visits. KLM plays an important role in this. Our carefully built network makes the Netherlands one of the best-connected economic and cultural centers in the world, with a favorable business climate for international organizations, companies, and scientific institutes.

KLM embraces the goals for reducing noise nuisance for residents around Schiphol. Therefore, we are investing 7 billion euros in quieter aircraft and have proposed significant measures in the Cleaner, Quieter, More Efficient plan. This shows that a smaller Schiphol is not necessary to achieve the noise targets. KLM finds it incomprehensible that the cabinet still intends to reduce to 478,000 aircraft movements.

Limiting the number of flights also carries a significant risk of retaliatory measures from other countries, which will not only affect aviation but also other Dutch companies.

We have serious doubts about the assumptions on which the ministry has based this number. The decision-making process does not meet the requirements of a careful Balanced Approach procedure, in which achieving the intended policy goal is central: noise reduction. Reduction of flight movements is not an end in itself and is expected to be legally unsustainable. We await the advice of the European Commission.

Aviation will always play a role in our lives if we want to explore the world, conduct business, and visit family. If the Netherlands is without a well-connected Schiphol, we are taking gigantic steps back in time. That is why it is so important that this decision is made on the right grounds.

Krimp,economie,schiphol,geluid

This sprawling network is now under pressure due to the Dutch government’s plans to reduce operational capacity at Schiphol. The cabinet has announced plans to pursue further cutbacks in aircraft movements at Schiphol to reduce noise and CO2 emissions.

KLM shares the ministerial goal of reducing noise and CO2 emissions. However, KLM argues that reduced airport capacity will benefit neither travellers, nor the broader network, nor the Netherlands in general. Moreover, it restricts the earning capacity of airlines wanting to invest in sustainability. Fleet renewal offers a better alternative than capacity reduction. It will ensure a greater reduction in noise and emissions and will allow travellers to keep flying. This will enable us to strike a better balance in the interests of Schiphol, the environment, the surrounding community and travellers. We would like to discuss this alternative with the Dutch government.

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

<pp:quotetext>I share the cabinet’s aim of striking a balance between the interests of a good airport, the surrounding community and the environment. To this I want to add the interests of (air) travellers. The cabinet’s current solution is to strike a better balance by reducing operational capacity at Schiphol. Calculations show that fleet renewal is a better alternative for reducing noise and CO2 emissions. This implies that it is better solution for all. This is the issue I would like to address with the government. Purely on the basis of facts and figures.</pp:quotetext>
