This year, the 101st edition of this international tournament will take place in the Netherlands under the name, the Dutch Open, with namesake KLM taking on a different role. If this prestigious event gets the greenlight, the Dutch Open will be played from 16 to 19 September at Bernardus Golf in Cromvoirt.

KLM is taking a step back but will remain affiliated with the tournament as a business partner. “The tournament has become a very effective and integral part of KLM’s commercial operations, just like running and the arts and culture,” says Harm Kreulen, Director of KLM Netherlands. “It’s a platform for dialogue with customers and business associates and will remain so, but KLM has decided to play a more modest role this year due to the situation in which we find ourselves.”

As Covid-19 is still a factor, the Dutch Open will of course be organised in compliance with the guidelines of the RIVM (the Netherlands’ national public health authority) as they apply in September. Organiser TIG Sports and Bernardus Golf are doing everything possible to guarantee a safe and successful tournament for players, visitors, partners and local residents.

]]>The first Dutch Open took place in 1912. In 1981, the tournament was supported by its first title sponsor making it the KLM Dutch Open. KLM served as the tournament’s title sponsor up to and including 1990. In 2004, the airline resumed this position. Since then KLM has served as the title sponsor of the biggest international golfing tournament on Dutch soil. The 2019 anniversary edition welcomed more than 50,000 spectators, who were able to enjoy four days of top golfing. It remained exciting until the last moment – only after the last put and ahead by only one shot, Sergio Garcia became the winner of the 100th tournament.

About the 2020 KLM Open

The 101st edition of the KLM Open will be held from 17 through 20 September 2020 at Bernardus Golf in Cromvoirt, close to Den Bosch. Since 2004, the KLM Open has been organised by TIG Sports and supported by title sponsor KLM and partner ING Private Banking.

The Chinese golfer planted his ball next to the flag with a phenomenal second stroke on a par 5. Thousands of golf fans gathered around the green held their breath as Wu just missed his eagle shot but a birdie was enough to win his third European Tour title with a score of -16. The KLM Open 2018 welcomed some 41,800 spectators to the tournament, slightly above the 2017 attendance.

]]>Third victory on European Tour

Wu is the first Asian to have a KLM Open victory under his belt. This was also his third triumph on the European Tour after previously winning the Volvo China Open and the Lyoness Open in 2016.

Playing in the penultimate flight, Wu’s birdie at the 18th hole put pressure on Chris Wood. Having led the field for much of the day, the Englishman was playing in the final group. He needed a birdie himself to tie with Wu but was only able to close with a par. Belgian Thomas Detry and Japanese golfer Hideto Tanihara finished in joint third spot with Ryder Cup vice-captain and triple Major Championship winner Padraig Harrington finishing fourth.

Max Albertus and Mark Reynolds best Dutch players

Mark Reynolds finished as the best Dutchman at this 99th edition of the KLM Open. Thanks to a solid final round of 69, he achieved an equal 53rd place. The 24-year-old Max Albertus from Oss put in another good performance, just like in the 2017 tournament, coming in at a shared 57th place. Out of the 14 Dutchmen who appeared at the start, Reynolds and Albertus were the only ones to make the cut. Two-time KLM Open winner Joost Luiten could not play at The Dutch due to an operation on his wrist in July. Luiten was, however, present over the four days of the tournament to promote the event and golf in general.

Harm Kreulen, Managing Director KLM The Netherlands, was proud to make this announcement on the occasion of the Golf Awards ceremony on Thursday evening in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. This means that KLM will continue to serve as the title sponsor of the biggest multi-day sports event in the Netherlands in 2019 and 2020. The KLM Open is widely recognised as the oldest tournament of the European Tour. The extension also means that at least three KLM Open editions remain on the cards. KLM has served as the title sponsor of the tournament since 2004.

The 2018 KLM Open is set to be held from 13 through 16 September 2018 and will be played for the third and last time at “The Dutch” golf course in Spijk (Municipality of Lingewaal). KLM and promoter TIG Sports are currently in discussion with various parties about the further details of the forthcoming tournaments in 2019 and 2020, including the choice of golf course.
