KLM presents these houses to World Business Class passengers on intercontinental flights. The 101st KLM miniature house is a replica of the 800-year-old building "Die Mariaen" (now known as "De Moriaan") in ’s-Hertogenbosch in the southern province of Brabant in the Netherlands.

]]>This stunning historical building is described in the city archives as "tcasteel op die Mariaen", the castle on the Mariaen. It's hard to say to what "Mariaen" referred exactly, but the name has been changed by vernacular speech over the centuries and is now known as "De Moriaan".

"De Moriaan" was chosen to be the 101st KLM miniature house because it was built as a mercantile house and because the province of Brabant is a major contributor to the Dutch economy today, with international commerce that brings many passengers to KLM. Since its establishment, KLM has created opportunities for international business relations between the Netherlands and the rest of the world. Even though the corona crisis has drastically reduced trade over the last few months, KLM still wants to mark its 101st anniversary. Not with celebrations, but with the unveiling of KLM's Delftware miniature house number 101. We hope that we will be able to present this house to many loyal passengers soon on board our flights.

About house 101

"De Moriaan" is one of the oldest brick buildings in the Netherlands. It was built in ’s-Hertogenbosch (also known as Den Bosch) over 800 years ago by members of the local nobility who settled in the new city, which had been granted a city charter in 1184. The enormous, 5-metre-high cellar was accessible at the rear from the quays of the inner harbour. Above this semi-underground commercial space was a huge hall, which was doubtlessly also used for trade. Behind this were a few smaller rooms and a kitchen.

The following historical text was found about the building:

„Die hartoghe van Brabant Henric, dede timmeren op die merct twee plaisante huzen, te weten Roijenburch ende tcasteel op die Mariaen.” 

(„The Duke of Brabant Henric commissioned to build two pleasant houses at the market, Roijenburch and the castle at the Mariaen.”)

"De Moriaan" was threatened with demolition in the 1950s, but was ultimately saved after years of protests by the people of Den Bosch. The city council eventually decided to preserve and restore the building, revealing once more the striking architecture of this "city castle". Today, "De Moriaan" is home to the VVV 's-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch) tourist visitor centre.

About KLM's Delftware houses

Since the 1950s, KLM has presented KLM Delftware miniature houses containing Bols Genever to World Business Class passengers on intercontinental flights. The houses are replicas of monumental buildings throughout the Netherlands and are eagerly collected. The number of houses in the collection has kept pace with KLM's anniversary since 1994, with new miniatures being added to the collection on or around KLM's anniversary on 7 October.

This auspicious occasion was celebrated with a spectacular event, attended by the Minister of Finance, Wopke Hoesktra. He, along with customers, partners, Air France-KLM executives, and staff from various divisions, looked back on 100 years of KLM history and forward to a sustainable future.

]]>Hangar 10 was the backdrop to the “KLM Experience”, where guests were treated to an impressive overview of KLM’s past, present and future. This included an in-depth look at KLM’s development over the decades and the role it played in international civil aviation.

KLM’s 100th Delftware miniature

In keeping with tradition, today KLM marked its anniversary with the presentation of a new Delftware miniature house; a moment eagerly awaited by faithful collectors all over the world. This year’s miniature is a replica of Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague, the home of King Willem-Alexander and his family. Today the first copy of KLM’s 100th Delftware miniature house was presented to Finance Minister Wopke Hoestra by KLM President & CEO Pieter Elbers.

Huis ten Bosch Palace was built in the mid-17th century at the behest of Prince Frederik Hendrik of Orange and his wife Amalia van Solms. It was extended in the first half of the 18th century by Prince Willem IV. After Willem I was crowned King of the Netherlands in 1815, the palace was regularly home to members of the Dutch royal family. Since January 2019, Huis ten Bosch Palace has been the residence of King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and their three daughters. The palace also serves as a ceremonial venue.

KLM will also mark its centenary with a special book titled Welcome Aboard – 100 years of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. The first copy was presented by KLM’s current Board of Managing Directors, Pieter Elbers, René de Groot and Erik Swelheim, to three former KLM presidents, Pieter Bouw, Leo van Wijk and Peter Hartman.

KLM festivities everywhere

Today, KLM staff worldwide shared special treats in honour of our 100th anniversary. There was cake and a special message from Pieter Elbers. In addition, all KLM staff will receive the coveted 100th KLM Delftware miniature house and have been invited to attend the “KLM Experience”. Over the past weekend, KLM staff in their thousands were immersed in 100 years of KLM history. Many thousands more will gather this weekend, to undergo an unforgettable experience, featuring a wide array of events, shows, and activities.

The latest addition to the series this year will be the first store of Douwe Egberts in Joure. The reason for this is that KLM will be serving Douwe Egberts’ sustainable UTZ-certified coffee on all its European and intercontinental flights with effect from Sunday, 28 October.

]]>The airline has opted for a special blend that tastes perfect when served at a high altitude. This ensures that the coffee tastes just as good in the air as it does on the ground. Customers will also be able to enjoy the sustainable coffee in both the European Crown Lounge and the intercontinental Crown Lounge. The coffee will also be available at work for KLM employees in the Netherlands as of October. KLM President & CEO Pieter Elbers presented the first house to Mayor Fred Veenstra at a festive meeting in Joure today.

About KLM's Delftware miniatures

KLM has presented its Delftware miniatures on board to passengers travelling in World Business Class on intercontinental flights since the 1950s. The houses are replicas of exceptional buildings in the Netherlands. The number of houses in the collection has corresponded with KLM’s age since 1994. A new house has been added to the collection on or around 7 October each year thereafter. Next year on 7 October 2019, KLM will celebrate – as the first airline in the world to operate under its original name - its 100th anniversary.
