All 22 Embraer 195-E2s will be fitted with four additional seats in Economy Class. This enables KLM Cityhopper to carry more passengers and generate increased revenue. At the same time, CO₂ emissions per passenger will decrease by 3 percent compared to the previous configuration of the E195-E2.

]]>A total of 22 aircraft will be converted by June 2026, increasing capacity from 132 to 136 seats. Aircraft currently parked in Twente will also receive the new cabin layout upon their return. This means that one aircraft will be converted every five working days.

The upgrade is made possible by reducing the size of the galley and optimizing the way it is stocked. This results in lower catering weight on every flight. KLM Cityhopper will now implement this new catering process across its entire fleet, which will lead to an annual reduction of 5 million kilograms in catering weight. This could save up to 160,000 kilograms of jet fuel per year.

KLM Cityhopper employees have been involved in this process improvement to ensure the new layout is practical for the crew. Passenger comfort and the onboard catering offering will remain unchanged.

The challenge is an initiative by SkyTeam to encourage airlines to conduct operations as efficiently and economically as possible. The participating airlines share the results of the tests so they can use this information to further enhance the sustainability of their overall flight operations.

]]>KLM recognizes its impact on the environment and climate and understands that there are limits to what our planet can handle, necessitating action if we want to continue operating within these boundaries. By testing various innovations during flight operations and onboard, KLM examines their outcomes with the goal of scaling them up and implementing them as standard practices. 

The KLM Cityhopper flight for The Aviation Challenge has landed in Valencia, the city designated as the European Green Capital for 2024 by the European Commission. 

Before and during the flight, KLM tests various initiatives. For instance, the implementation of a new climb procedure, OptiClimb, can save 1% fuel on KLM Cityhopper flights. This procedure advises pilots on the most efficient climb speeds based on weight, weather conditions, aircraft type, and route. This procedure is implemented on all KLM Cityhopper flights next week. Additionally, efforts are made to conduct ground processes at the airport—both at Schiphol and Valencia—using as much electric equipment as possible. 

Onboard, several changes are made, both noticeable and unnoticeable to passengers. Calculations ensure the aircraft is loaded with the minimum possible weight, and food waste is collected separately. Wine is carried in 'Wine Tubes' instead of small bottles, reducing both weight and waste. The trolleys are also updated to separately collect and process all waste. Porcelain is replaced onboard, and the Business Class cup is made from recycled agricultural waste. KLM's inflight magazine, Holland Herald, is available digitally via onboard WiFi. Lastly, the crew received uniforms made from a new, more sustainable fabric and wears the previously introduced KLM sneakers by Filling Pieces. 

As an airline, KLM aims to involve its passengers in the transition as well. Passengers who purchase alternative fuel (SAF) are given priority boarding, right after SkyPriority passengers. Tap water is made more accessible at Schiphol with water points, allowing passengers to fill reusable bottles provided by Dopper, reducing the need for plastic water bottles. Passengers are also encouraged to pack light before the flight. 

The idea for The Aviation Challenge originated from a group of enthusiastic KLM colleagues. They were inspired by the historic London-Melbourne race in 1934, which aimed to connect the world and bring people together. Today's aviation challenges are not about bridging distances but about sustainability. Hence, SkyTeam's concrete challenge in the form of The Aviation Challenge is to conduct a regular commercial flight with as little impact on the planet as possible.

Due to technical issues, KLM Cityhopper is having difficulty fully deploying the E2. KLM Cityhopper is consulting with Embraer and engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney to seek a solution for these issues, which have no impact on flight safety.

KLM Cityhopper has deployed alternative capacity by retaining E190s that were to be returned to lease companies. Several wet lease agreements have also been signed.

In June, KLM Cityhopper announced its intention to buy 35 Embraer 195-E2s, but this order comprised a fixed order for 15 aircraft plus an option for another 20. The fixed part of this order has therefore been raised by six. The first Embraer 195-E2 will be delivered in the first quarter of 2021.

]]>The Embraer 195-E2 will have 132 seats on board, which is 32 more than the Embraer 190, which is currently the largest aircraft in KLM Cityhopper’s fleet. The new aircraft will enable KLM Cityhopper to accommodate growing passenger demand without increasing flight frequency

Better customer experience

The new aircraft will be equipped with new Recaro seats, which are ergonomically designed and leave space for more legroom. They are lighter than the current seats. This is beneficial for fuel consumption and will reduce CO2 emissions. The Business Class seats have adjustable back and headrests. All seats will have a USB port and there will be Wi-Fi on board. The Recaro seats are already in use aboard KLM’s newest Boeing 737s. The cabin has atmospheric lighting and the newly designed overhead compartments offer more space for carry-on baggage. By adding a third cabin attendant aboard these flights, KLM expects to optimise the travel experience for its customers.

Sustainability

Although the new Embraers offer greater capacity, they are more sustainable and silent than their predecessors. The E195-E2 burns 9% less fuel per flight and emits 31% less CO2 per passenger than the E190. The Embraer 195-E2 is also 48% more silent than the Embraer 190. The replacement of older aircraft with newer types is in line with KLM’s initiative Fly Responsibly.

With Fly Responsibly, KLM has committed itself to creating a more sustainable future for the airline industry. Fly Responsibly encompasses all efforts KLM is undertaking and intends to undertake to improve the sustainability of its operations. However, true progress can only be achieved if the whole industry cooperates. With Fly Responsibly, KLM therefore invites customers and others to make use of available CO2 compensation schemes and urges businesses to compensate for staff air travel via the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme.

]]>More choice based on more individual elements

More individual elements have been added to the meal box. For example, granola and jam are now served separately to the yoghurt, and dressing and nuts separately to the salads, enabling customers themselves to determine how they would like to put their meals together.

Sustainable products

Until noon, our customers will receive a box containing a breakfast with fresh fruit and cold cuts consisting of cheese and meat with a hot roll. During the rest of the day, the EBC Box will contain a salad and side dishes including a slice of apple pie, for example. All of the products will be sustainable, and produce from local suppliers will be used as far as possible. The meat and eggs will carry “Beter Leven” certification and all products containing fish will bear the MSC stamp of approval. The cardboard used for the boxes will also be sustainable and recyclable.

Choice & control service on six flights

On KLC’s six longest flights (Cagliari, Helsinki, Ibiza, Porto, Split and Valencia), Business Class passengers themselves will be able to determine the time when they would like to eat. KLC thus meets the needs of its customers to have more control and choice. In addition to the meal box, customers will be able to enjoy a second service: a Dutch croquette snack or a spinach-and-feta pastry.

Luxurious look & feel and more refined format

Not only have the contents and look & feel of the meal box been revitalised, but the format has also been adjusted providing more space for something to drink, for example. The luxury box now also fits onto the tray table of the Embraer even better. This is a big plus point since KLC’s fleet now consist exclusively of Embraers. With 49 Embraer E-Jets, 32 E190s and 17 E175s, KLC now operates the biggest E-Jet fleet in Europe.

KLM has the ambition of being Europe’s most successful, customer-centric, innovative and efficient network carrier. This means creating memorable experiences for customers on the ground and in the air by pursuing the “Moving Your World” approach. KLC’s new meal concept contributes towards achieving this ambition.

]]>The delivery of KLC’s 15th and 16th Embraer E175+ and its 32nd Embraer E190 mark another milestone in KLM’s on-going fleet renewal programme. These new aircraft offer passengers greater comfort and more space, thereby helping to create memorable travel experiences.

The Embraer aircraft also perfectly coincide with KLM’s sustainability policy. Owing to their advanced features, the Embraer jets burn less fuel, which means they emit less CO2. The fuel consumption of the new E175+ aircraft is an impressive 22% lower than that of the Fokker 70s they replaced.

Europe’s largest Embraer fleet
KLM Cityhopper has the largest Embraer fleet in Europe. Since KLC phased out its last Fokker aircraft, its fleet has consisted entirely of Embraers. KLM currently uses its “E-jets” to operate around 300 short-haul flights a day, mostly to European business destinations. The E190 has 100 seats, while the E175+ has 88 seats.

With the three new arrivals, the fleet will consist of a total of 48 aircraft. In April 2018, KLC will take delivery of the 49th Embraer, which is the last of the current order.

]]>This is another important step in KLM Cityhopper’s fleet renewal programme. This year, KLC will phase out its last Fokker 70 so that the fleet will consist entirely of Embraer aircraft. In June, KLC announced that it had ordered two more Embraer 190s. The next Embraer 175+ is expected to arrive in November of this year. In Europe, KLC is the operator with the largest Embraer fleet.

More environmentally friendly
The Embraer 175+ has a large number of technical features that significantly reduce fuel consumption and, with it, CO2 emissions compared to the Fokker 70. By comparison, the new aircraft consumes up to 22% less fuel.

KLC unveiled the special farewell livery as the official launch of the Fokker 70’s phase-out. The special aircraft will fly during the coming months, making its last flight on 28 October.

]]>The farewell livery is a symbol of thanks to everyone involved in the Fokker’s operation and to all who made a contribution to this bit of Dutch heritage. With the help of this livery, KLM Cityhopper is celebrating the 97-year partnership between KLM and Fokker: KLM is a staunch Dutch company and aviation pioneer, and Fokker is the Dutch manufacturer of the aircraft with which KLM made its first flights. The livery was applied in Hangar 73 at Schiphol-Oost, where the Fokker company used to deliver its aircraft to a variety of airlines.

Right now, there are nine Fokker 70s still in KLM Cityhopper’s fleet. When the Fokker 70 is phased out, the last aircraft of Dutch origin will disappear from Dutch soil. It will bring a special period in aviation history to an end.

KLM Cityhopper announced its fleets renewal programme in 2008. In recent years, the Fokker 50 and 100 have been phased out and replaced by Embraer 175s and 190s. By acquiring this new aircraft type, KLM and KLM Cityhopper can once again contribute to more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly operations. Quality and comfort for passengers are extremely important in that process.

KLM Cityhopper is Europe’s largest regional carrier. Each year, it carries out more than 105,000 flights from Amsterdam Schiphol to sixty-seven European destinations. No later than 2018, KLM Cityhopper’s entire fleet will consist of thirty Embraer 190 and seventeen Embraer 175 aircraft. This will give KLM the single-largest Embraer fleet in Europe.

]]>The new addition, seating 88 passengers, will operate its first commercial service from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Stavanger in Norway on Sunday, 27 March 2016. It will subsequently fly to destinations such as Ålesund, Torp Sandefjord, Turin and Manchester. Ultimately, the E175+ will fly to all European destinations that KLM Cityhopper serves on behalf of KLM. Through 2018, KLM will add a total of 17 Embraer 175+ aircraft to its fleet. Combined with the 30 Embraer 190s already in service, KLM Cityhopper will then have Europe’s largest Embraer fleet.

]]>On 19 December, the thirtieth—and, provisionally, final—Embraer 190 will arrive in the Netherlands. Starting next year, KLM Cityhopper’s fleet will by supplemented by fifteen Embraer 175s. The first of its kind is scheduled to arrive in March. This signals a new phase in KLM Cityhopper’s fleet renewal programme.

As a result, KLM will have the single-largest Embraer fleet in Europe. Air Transport News has hailed KLM Cityhopper as the “Regional Airline of the Year for 2015”.

In 2018, the KLM Cityhopper fleet will consist of thirty E190 and fifteen E175+ aircraft. This represents an enormous efficiency gain since the entire fleet will then consist of Embraer aircraft. KLM Cityhopper’s cockpit crews operate both Embraer types. Additionally, KLM Cityhopper and Hop! have together signed an option for seventeen new Embraers.

Increased seat capacity
The seat capacity of the KLM Cityhopper fleet will increase with the acquisition of the new Embraers. The E190 is equipped with 100 seats and the E175+ boasts 88 seats. The Fokker 70 offers 80 seats; the middle seat cannot be booked in Business Class. The fifteen E175+ will be equipped with ultramodern slim seats. The two E190s will be equipped with the same comfortable seats as those in the existing Embraer 190 fleet.

Better fuel efficiency
The new Embraer fleet boasts far better fuel efficiency in comparison with the Fokker 70 fleet. The latest E175+ is the most efficient and economical aircraft in the Embraer series. And the aircraft will of course also be delivered in the new KLM livery.
