This is not a safety issue. KLM has a security management system that is used to analyse risks and determine safe flight routes. Analysis has shown that operations over Iran and Iraq are safe again. This analysis is based on information shared within a Dutch group of experts, consisting of all Dutch airlines, Netherlands intelligence services, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of the Interior & Kingdom Relations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NCTV and the Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management. In addition, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has no safety concerns about crossing Iraqi and Iranian airspace, as long as sufficient altitude is maintained. The French and American authorities have, however, not yet reopened Iraqi and Iranian airspace to French and American citizens. Owing to its code-sharing agreements with Air France and Delta Air Lines, KLM is compelled to refrain from flying over Iran and Iraq.

Substantiated by such analyses, it is once again safe to fly over Iran and Iraq. This decision is also based on the information shared within the Dutch group of experts that unites all Dutch airlines, the intelligence services, the NCTV counter-terrorism unit, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. The British and German governments have also issued a notice to airmen (NOTAM), stating that commercial airlines can once again fly safely over Iran and Iraq. Furthermore, on 16 January 2020, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued a notification that it would be safe to fly above Iran at an altitude of more than 25,000 feet (7,620 metres).

]]>As a result of the negative results and financial outlook for the Tehran operation, the last flight will take off from Amsterdam on 22 September 2018 and land at Schiphol on 23 September.

Passengers with a ticket for a flight from Amsterdam to Tehran or vice-versa on or after 24 September will be transferred to the most suitable alternative or financially compensated.
