Aviation sector will institute cassation proceedings

Numerous airlines will institute cassation proceedings against the judgement of the Amsterdam Court of Appeal regarding the proposed implementation of a temporary experimentation rule. The group includes KLM Group (KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, KLM Cityhopper, Martinair and Transavia), Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue, Air Canada, easyJet, Corendon, TUI fly, and trade associations IATA, which has 300 airline members worldwide, and Airlines for America (A4A), which represents 10 U.S. airlines. This step is supported by the airline industry associations BARIN, Air Cargo Netherlands (ACN), Airlines for Europe (A4E) and the European Regions Airline Association (ERA).

The current judgement by the Amsterdam Court of Appeal creates a lack of clarity and causes uncertainty for passengers and the aviation sector. This is because it is unclear how the experimental scheme will be applied, how it should be enforced and ultimately - how the ruling will affect the number of aircraft movements at Schiphol. Moreover, the judgement conflicts with national, European and international regulations. It is in the interests of all parties to obtain clarity.

Amsterdam host city of next IATA Wings of Change Europe event

The fourth edition of the successful IATA Wings of Change Europe event will next year be held in Amsterdam with KLM as host carrier. This was announced in Istanbul today. The two-day event will take place around the beginning of November and is expected to attract more than 400 invitees to discuss key themes for the airline industry, such as sustainability, diversity & inclusion, and infrastructure.

As a member of the IATA Board of Governors, KLM CEO Marjan Rintel is the voice of the Netherlands in this international trade association for the world's airlines. Her position is important for KLM, considering the enormous challenges facing the sector. The IATA, representing around 290 airlines from 120 countries, aims to shape a safe, secure and sustainable air transport industry.

Appointment of Pieter Elbers to the IATA Board of Governors

Pieter Elbers, President and CEO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, was appointed (back) to the Board of Governors during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on November 24, 2020.

Pieter Elbers served before on the IATA Board of Governors from 2016 until June 2019.

He will use his extensive experience in the airline industry, of which the last 6 years as KLM’s CEO, in supporting IATA to work together with airlines and other stakeholders on building back a better aviation industry after the COVID-19 crisis.

IATA unifies 260 airlines from 118 different countries. The organisation focuses on safeguarding and promoting a safe, profitable, sustainable and innovative airline industry. Each year, the industry leaders gather for the AGM, which was held in Dublin this year.

Important topics include the financial situation, standardisation, the innovation of sales channels and climate change.

Earlier this year, communication took place about the recommended appointment of Alexandre de Juniac as Director General & CEO of IATA. During the same IATA meeting, confirmation was also given of the appointment of Alexandre de Juniac to the post of Director General & CEO of IATA.

The Air France-KLM Group’s Board of Directors has prepared a plan to appoint a successor to Mr. de Juniac given his imminent appointment as the IATA Director General and CEO, from 1 August 2016 at the latest. According to the Air France-KLM Board’s internal rules, the Air France-KLM Appointments and Governance Committee - with the help of an international recruitment consultancy - has initiated the process of identifying the best executive able to continue the Group’s consolidation and development.

Members of the Air France-KLM Group’s Board of Directors would like to pay tribute to the outstanding work of Alexandre de Juniac in achieving the Group’s economic and financial recovery, enhancing its range of services and winning back customers. The Air France-KLM Board is delighted that these accomplishments have been recognized in the confidence of the IATA Board of Governors’ recommendation for Alexandre de Juniac to lead their global association. Alexandre de Juniac will be the first person coming from a French airline to lead IATA.
