KLM Group’s operating result in the third quarter of 2021 amounted to a profit of €168 million, compared to a loss of €234 million in 2020 and a profit of €511 million in 2019. </pp:summary>

With the summer holiday period from July through to the end of September, this is traditionally a strong quarter for the airline industry. Borders within Europe gradually opened up for travellers and the Caribbean part of the kingdom was assigned a green or yellow colour code by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Partly as a result of this, KLM welcomed 5.2 million passengers on board last summer, compared to 2.3 million in 2020 and 9.5 million in 2019. Transavia also reflects a positive trend. This shows that recovery has continued across the passenger business. Customers want to travel and the impact of borders opening up is directly visible in the bookings. For next winter, customers will be able to choose from 162 KLM destinations. What’s more, the range of destinations, with more emphasis on leisure, will return to its pre-Covid-19 level.

Cargo continues to perform well. Third-party turnover therefore amounted to €77 million, reflecting a decrease of 22%.

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

Consequently, the market continued to recover. Together with our effective and ambitious network strategy and focus on costs, this contributed towards achieving positive third quarter results. I’m proud of this and would like to thank our customers and KLM colleagues alike. It’s clear that we are climbing out of the doldrums and that further recovery is underway. Marking another important milestone, the US will also open up to European passengers in the fourth quarter. Especially during the first months of the year, recovery in overall passenger traffic was hampered by delays. At the same time, our cargo results have remained strong and we have focused on cost control, benefited from state support programmes (NOW), and we saw European passenger traffic recovering at the start of summer. The coronavirus pandemic has lasted longer and been more unpredictable than anticipated. It is therefore even more important to remain agile and innovative. We are achieving this, among other things, by expanding our network with destinations where we expect to see demand recovering first.
<pp:quotetext>The travel restrictions in place in many countries are hampering the airline industry’s recovery. What’s more, the specific test requirements in the Netherlands that also apply to transfer passengers at Schiphol are having a significantly negative impact on KLM. To a certain extent, the negative impact on passenger operations is being mitigated by effective cost control and extremely strong cargo volumes thanks to vaccination shipments, for example.

Swift implementation of the vaccination schedule is essential for travel to resume. Until such time as this is achieved, it is important to continue with effective, targeted measures. KLM supports the EU’s call to reopen the borders within Europe as soon as possible.

Specifically for the Dutch market, KLM is urging that a risk assessment for potential infection be carried out for each country and region and that pre-corona colour codings are therefore reintroduced. Countries and regions characterised by a low infection rate could then be assigned a green or yellow code. This would enable Dutch nationals to once again book flights to holiday destinations.
There is hope and I believe strongly in the resilience of the airline industry and KLM. Even after the crisis, KLM will continue to play a defining role in the Dutch economy and society as a sustainable, customer-centric and innovative airline.</pp:quotetext>

The EUR 3.4 billion loan package, consisting of a government loan and guarantees on bank loans, is crucial to securing the future of the airline and its network for the Netherlands. KLM has spent the past few months hammering out the details of this austerity programme with the trade unions for cockpit, ground and cabin personnel, in line with the required structure and percentages.

The outcomes of these negotiations have been formalised in outline collective labour agreements and incorporated as such into the restructuring plan that KLM submitted to the Dutch Government on 1 October. The outline agreements define the austerity measures that will apply until early 2022 (for cockpit crews) and late 2022 (for ground and cabin personnel). It was especially important to specify the contribution that all KLM employees would be making towards the airline’s cost-reduction efforts over the entire loan period.

To meet this demand without having to re-enter negotiations, a “commitment clause” was inserted into the agreements between KLM and the trade unions. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in March this year, we have asked a lot of all our employees, but for a common purpose: to steer KLM through this crisis. These unprecedented times call for unprecedented and unusual actions. The far-reaching measures we must take and the accompanying processes and procedures are new and complex for KLM and the trade unions.

The past few days have been incredibly tense for everyone. The company has been under enormous pressure, its reputation has suffered and there have been internal divisions. In the end, however, KLM and the trade unions got through it together, and that’s really what it’s all about. COVID-19 has undermined the good results of recent years. In order to secure the future of the company and its network for the Netherlands, the loan and government guarantees on bank loans totalling EUR 3.4 billion are crucial. KLM is very grateful to the Dutch government for its support and ability to provide financing at this time.

The government has set requirements for the granting of the aforementioned loan package. An important requirement in this respect is that all KLM employees must make a labour contribution during the term of the loan (expected until 2025). In recent months intensive negotiations have taken place with the trade unions in the three collective labour agreement domains (Cockpit, Ground and Cabin) about the fulfilment of the employment condition contribution of KLM employees, in accordance with the percentages and structure required by the government.

The results of these negotiations have been laid down in 'outline collective labour agreement agreements' and are included as such in the restructuring plan that KLM submitted on 1 October. These outline agreements give concrete form to this contribution until the beginning of 2022 (Cockpit) and the end of 2022 (Ground and Cabin).

In October, KLM and the trade unions worked on the main lines of these agreements in detailed agreements. At the same time, on behalf of the government, the Minister of Finance, with the help of a consultancy firm, is assessing the entire submitted by KLM restructuring plan. This evaluation should be completed by the end of October. Specifically in the area of employment conditions, the Minister emphasised to KLM that it should be more explicitly agreed and laid down that the contribution of all KLM employees should apply for the full duration of the loans.

In order to meet this requirement, without repeating the negotiations altogether, there is a 'commitment clause' which will be included in the agreements between KLM and the trade unions. In this clause, all unions must each commit themselves to continue to make the labour conditions contribution with all KLM employees in accordance with the requirement of the Ministry of Finance (whereby the exact details are up to KLM and the unions).

The management of KLM yesterday made an urgent appeal to the unions to agree to this. Today five trade unions CNV, De Unie, NVLT, VNC and VKP signed this clause. FNV (Cabin and Ground) is still considering the matter. The pilots' union VNV has not signed this clause. This means that KLM does not meet the requirements set by the Minister. This outcome was communicated to the Minister this afternoon.

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>
                    <pp:quotename>KLM President & CEO Pieter Elbers</pp:quotename>
<pp:quotetext>I realise that we have asked a lot from all parties with the aim of KLM surviving this COVID-19 pandemic; abandoning normal negotiations and procedures and, under great time pressure in this time of crisis, agreeing to hand in working conditions for a longer period of time than the current collective labour agreements. Last period, together with trade unions and the Works Council, we worked incredibly hard to reach agreements on the contribution of KLM employees in these difficult times. These are unprecedented times that also require unprecedented and unusual steps and approaches. The recent collective labour agreement agreements between KLM and the unions, as concluded on 1 October, show that this is also working together. That is commendable, as is the daily commitment of all KLM colleagues in these difficult times.

It is all the more regrettable that it has not been possible today to get all the unions to sign the 'commitment clause' by the end of October. This was the final step required for approval from the Cabinet. Without this loan, KLM will not get through this difficult time. This makes this impasse extremely worrying.

I would like to express my thanks to the five unions that signed the commitment clause and that have assumed their responsibilities. At FNV, we await the internal deliberations. For the time being, I can only call once again on the pilots' union VNV to take this final step and to fulfil its commitment by signing this clause. In the interests of its members, all KLM employees and the future of our company.

I have only one goal in mind and that is for KLM to survive this crisis. This will only succeed if we all keep the general interest in mind and are prepared to make a contribution that goes beyond our own position.</pp:quotetext>

The presentation of this restructuring plan was a key condition in obtaining a government loan and guarantees to the value of EUR 3.4 billion. The plan outlines how KLM intends to overcome the worst crisis in almost 101 years in operation, explaining how KLM intends to fulfil the conditions imposed by the Netherlands government. The plan is currently under review at the ministry.
</pp:summary>

The presentation of the plan is a very important milestone. Substantively, the plan includes elements such as the reassessment of strategy, cost-cutting initiatives, financial considerations and how KLM staff will contribute by way of reduced employment conditions.

The basic principle of the restructuring plan is that KLM’s existing business model is still valid and valuable, but that far-reaching, structural initiatives are required to ensure KLM’s future success. Owing to the effects of the corona pandemic, KLM is preparing for an extended period during which fewer flights will be operated. The organisation will become smaller and less costly, as well as more sustainable, economical and efficient.

As KLM plays such an important economic and societal role in the Netherlands, the government has offered the airline a loan package, to which it has attached certain conditions. One condition is that KLM staff should contribute to KLM’s restructuring by accepting reduced employment conditions, amounting to income-dependent, graduated cutbacks of up to 20%. These reduced conditions will apply for the duration of the loan period.

KLM has now reached agreement with all unions for ground, cockpit and cabin staff on key principles of this plan for the period through 2022. This includes the unions VNC and FNV Cabine in the cabin domain and the unions FNV Luchtvaart, CNV, De Unie, VKP and NVLT in the ground domain, as well as the Dutch Airline Pilots Association VNV in the cockpit domain.

One of the other conditions imposed by the government is a 15% reduction in controllable costs. The KLM Works Council has been asked to advise on the downsizing and further simplification of the KLM organisation. In addition, there are more than 70 initiatives that will mainly reduce external costs. Significant cost savings will be achieved by phasing out leased aircraft and deploying a more efficient fleet. KLM is also meeting with suppliers and chain partners to contribute to cost reduction.

In terms of labour costs, KLM has already achieved savings by shedding jobs. KLM has already downsized by way of various measures, including non-renewal of short-term contracts (1,500 jobs) and a voluntary resignation scheme (2,000 jobs). By the end of the year, KLM will employ around 4,500 fewer people than it did before the corona pandemic.

Regrettably, further cutbacks cannot be excluded in view of the magnitude and gravity of the crisis. KLM has also reached agreement on a social plan with trade unions for ground personnel and cabin crew. The existing collective labour agreement for cockpit crew already provides a social plan.

Furthermore, KLM will reopen a voluntary resignation scheme targeting specific divisions and departments in order to minimise involuntary dismissals.

The KLM Works Council has reviewed and evaluated 37 requests for advice. The restructuring plan is ambitious and pressure ran high leading up to 1 October. The constructive contribution of divisional staff representatives and the Works Council deserves high praise. The Works Council’s positive advice on restructuring plans was subject to the successful negotiation of a social plan.

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

<pp:quotetext>Today we took a major, exceedingly important step towards restructuring KLM. The plan we submitted to the Ministry of Finance today is a condition for obtaining a financial package, making this an important milestone in KLM’s recovery. The aim is to ensure that KLM survives this crisis and emerges stronger than before. The measures are far-reaching and painful for KLM staff, but they are necessary. I am grateful for the support of the Netherlands government and proud of the efforts of all involved – KLM staff, our Works Council and trade unions – who worked together to achieve this result.</pp:quotetext>

This is excellent news for KLM and for anyone who would like to become an airline pilot.

</pp:summary>

Within the new structure, the KLM Flight Academy promises students that, if they do not find a job as a pilot at KLM within five years after completing the programme, a guarantee fund will clear their study debt at the bank. KLM and the KLM Flight Academy have set up the new construction to ensure a sufficient influx of new pilots. This year alone, KLM has accepted 143 graduates from the KLM Flight Academy.

In September 2016, it became impossible for any bank to finance the cost of pilot training. Intensive talks between KLM, the KLM Flight Academy, and ABN AMRO Bank have resulted in this new opportunity for KLM Flight Academy students.

Want to become a pilot?
KLM gives preference to graduates of the KLM Flight Academy as it is a Dutch, high-grade school with a long history in training excellent airline pilots. Anyone who is interested can now sign up. The KLM Flight Academy is aiming to start its next class in November. This year, it is running two classes.
