KLM house no. 96: the Hamel House
The Hamel House was reconstructed in Hendrick’s birthplace. The house brings the historic tale of Gorinchem’s naval hero to life visually. It isn’t only a museum; it’s also a place where the Dutch and Korean cultures merge.

Hendrick Hamel (Gorinchem, 1630 - 1692) was a Dutch seafarer. In 1653 his ship, the ‘Sperwer’, became wrecked off the coast of the Korean island of Jeju. The survivors were not allowed to leave the country because the Korean king was afraid that information about Korea would get out to the rest of the world. Only after thirteen years, did Hendrick Hamel succeed in escaping, along with seven others.

Hamel kept a detailed journal of his time in Korea, which served as the only source of information about Korea at that time in Europe. Because of his stories the country became known in Europe; Koreans are still proud of this today. Hamel became well known in Korea and this earned him great respect.

The houses are given as exclusive gifts to KLM passengers travelling in World Business Class. They have become a much-coveted collector’s item worldwide.

KLM has presented its Delftware miniatures on board since the 1950s. The houses are replicas of exceptional buildings in the Netherlands. The number of houses in the collection has corresponded with KLM’s age since 1994. A new house has been added to the collection on 7 October each year thereafter. The houses are presented to passengers travelling in World Business Class on intercontinental flights.

KLM miniature: HEINEKEN Brewery
The HEINEKEN Brewery was built in 1913, replacing the old brewery that had stood on the Stadhouderskade in Amsterdam since 1868. The last beer was brewed on the Stadhouderskade in 1988.

At that time, around 90,000 people a year were visiting the brewery. Because HEINEKEN wanted to honour this tradition, the brewery on the Stadhouderskade was converted into a visitors’ centre. The building, which dates from 1913, is now the heart of the Heineken Experience, which annually attracts 600,000 visitors from around the world.

KLM has presented the miniatures since the 1950s. The houses are replicas of special buildings in the Netherlands. Since 1994, the number of miniatures has coincided with KLM’s age. A new miniature is added to the collection every year on 7 October. The houses are presented to World Business Class passengers on intercontinental flights.

KLM has had a special bond with the island of Texel since the 1930s. From 1 July 1937 until 22 August 1939, KLM operated a scheduled service between Schiphol and Texel Airport. By choosing the Oudheidkamer as its 94^th Delftware miniature, KLM reaffirms its ties with the island.

The Oudheidkamer was built as a poorhouse in 1599, providing shelter and support for those in need. People who were temporarily homeless or strangers to the island were allowed to stay in the house free of charge for three nights. The house was later used as a family home until it became a museum in 1954, exhibiting a variety of artworks and historical objects, most of which date from the 19^th century.

In replicating the Dutch Antilles’ House, KLM hopes to reinforce its historically strong ties with the Netherlands Antilles. On 15 December 1934, KLM operated its first transatlantic flight to Curaçao with the Fokker F-XVIII ‘Snip’ on the occasion of celebrating 300 years of Dutch administration on the islands of the Netherlands Antilles. KLM President & CEO Peter Hartman: “With this flight, KLM established the foundations for the route network to the Netherlands Antilles. The flights proved successful then and the same applies today. Each year, KLM carries more than 150,000 passengers to the islands of Curaçao, Bonaire and Sint Maarten. This just goes to show how popular the Netherlands Antilles are amongst our passengers.”
