Cabin crew unions FNV and VNC announce work stoppage

<pp:caseid>153550</pp:caseid><pp:summary>
FNV Cabin Crew and VNC have notified KLM that they have called on cabin crew to observe a work stoppage of 10 minutes directly after the cabin crew briefing. This industrial action will take place on Thursday 27 October and Friday 28 October from 05:00 to 23:00 hours. The stoppage could be observed on all flights departing from Amsterdam.

</pp:summary>

The work stoppage will have potential consequences for passengers in the form of delays or longer boarding times. What’s more, the action could cause significant financial damage to KLM.

FNV Cabin Crew and VNC are conducting industrial action again against the introduction of a productivity measure effective 30 October. This measure means that KLM has had to reach a decision to assign one cabin attendant less in Economy Class on its Boeing 777-200, Airbus 330-300 and Boeing 787 aircraft. This will affect approximately 40% of the airline’s long-haul flights. This solution will have the least impact on the client and will largely produce the necessary productivity gain of 4%.

KLM emphasises that it became necessary to introduce this measure because it has not been possible to enter into consultations with the cabin crew unions about KLM’s vision of the future and the necessary productivity measures. KLM has no choice but to introduce this measure in the interests of its continuity and healthy growth.

KLM finds it regrettable that FNV Cabin Crew has chosen this course of action and remains open to consultation to resolve the issues at hand.

</pp:boilerplate>

The pilot project saw around 100 cockpit and cabin crew using the iPad on board. Evaluation revealed that cabin crew using the iPad could respond more quickly and effectively to the personal wishes of passengers. For pilots, the iPad is an extra aid in ensuring smooth flight operations. Decisions can, for instance, be made more quickly because flight plans can be shared earlier. The full rollout of the iPads will take several months. By autumn of this year, all pilots, (senior) pursers and senior cabin attendants of KLC will be equipped with an iPad.

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

                    <pp:quotetext>Our customers greatly appreciate the personal service KLM offers on board, as was confirmed earlier this week when we were presented with the Skytrax award for Best Airline Staff Service in Europe. The iPad enables staff to offer passengers even more personal service and can, for instance, be used to update them more quickly on last-minute operational changes. Even in economically challenging times, it is very important to keep investing in our customers and personnel. Innovation is high on KLM’s agenda. Via this project we are investing in our customers and crew.

We also feel it is our responsibility to keep innovating in the area of sustainability. Ultimately, when the iPad replaces all the documentation that crew bring along on board, this will reduce weight and therefore fuel consumption”.</pp:quotetext>
