<pp:caseid>523877</pp:caseid>

KLM and the Dutch Airline Pilots Association (VNV) have reached an agreement in principle on a new collective labour agreement (CLA), effective 1 March 2022 through 1 March 2023, for pilots covered by the CLA for KLM cockpit crew. KLM is satisfied with the result. This will ensure calm and stability for the coming year and reflects KLM’s current circumstances. KLM and VNV will now finalise the protocol texts, which VNV will then present to their members’ council for approval.

KLM has ensured that the new CLA takes account of price developments in the Netherlands. A wage clause specifying a 2% increase effective 1 October 2022 and further 2% effective 1 March 2023 has been agreed. This reflects agreements recently reached with the trade unions representing ground personnel.

We also reached an agreement with VNV on productivity and flexibility in the coming period.

The existing international commuting arrangement for pilots has been discontinued. Pilots who live outside the Netherlands will now pay for their flights when commuting to work.

KLM employees will receive one-off payment when KLM no longer has a credit facility with government guarantees. This payment acknowledges the concerted effort made by KLM staff in the face of recent challenges.

Despite KLM’s successful recovery, the future remains uncertain due to factors such as high inflation, rising costs, uncertainties surrounding coronavirus and scarcity in the job market. KLM must therefore continue to cut costs structurally. The negotiating parties agreed to return to the table if the situation so demands in the coming period.

Workplace,cao,klm,KLM Royal Dutch Airlines,cla,cockpit,vnv,statement,statements

KLM has managed to achieve a great deal in recent years in terms of cutting costs. Simultaneously, the network has been expanded to include new destinations and older aircraft have been replaced by newer types in a rigorous programme of fleet renewal. As a result, KLM has achieved good results and will continue to implement its chosen strategy. This will now also be expressed in expanding the number of cabin and cockpit crew members.

A targeted recruitment campaign will be launched specifically to recruit cabin crew. Pilots will be approached directly within the group of newly qualified pilots attending the KLM Flight Academy.

</pp:summary>

When a pilot leaves the cockpit, it is standard procedure to close the door. The pilot remaining in the cockpit then opens the door to let his colleague back in. In the event that the pilot in the cockpit is unable to open the door, there is an emergency procedure that pilots can use to regain entry to the cockpit.

All KLM pilots are recruited on the basis of rigorous selection criteria and are trained in accordance with international standards that apply for all airlines worldwide. This includes mental and physical screening. During regular inspections and recurrent training on board and in simulators, the skills of KLM pilots are continually tested to ensure maximum flight safety. In addition, KLM pilots complete high-grade communication and behavioural training that is fully tailored to their job. KLM will await the full results of the investigation of the GermanWings accident.

cockpit rules,statement,cockpit,germanwings

TNO Reports Reassuring Results for Cockpit Air Quality Tests

<pp:caseid>20831</pp:caseid><pp:subtitle>TCP Levels Much Lower than in Previous International Study</pp:subtitle><pp:summary>
The Dutch research institute TNO tested the cabin air quality on 20 flights operated by nine different KLM Boeing 737’s, assessing the level of TCPs in the cockpit. TNO measurements, released today, confirm that there are only negligible quantities of TCP present aboard KLM aircraft. The ToCP type, for which health risk levels have been stipulated, was completely absent in cockpits. The levels measured were also much lower than those found in previous international studies (as conducted by Cranfield and others). These earlier studies concluded that it was highly unlikely that such low levels constituted a health risk. The TCP levels measured by TNO are even lower than the results of previous studies, which means that the findings of the Cranfield study also apply in this instance.

Measurements were also conducted when the aircraft was on the ground. TNO conducted its measurements in the breathing zone, but also gathered swipe samples from the glare shield.

The average TCP levels were 7 ng/m3. The most toxic type, ToCP, was entirely absent. The health risk level for this substance is 100,000 ng/m3. No health risk levels have been set for other TCPs. On average, the TCP levels measured by TNO were 14,000 times lower than the health risk level set for ToCP. In only one instance was an atypical value of 155 ng/m3 measured, but this is still 650 times lower than the stipulated ToCP norm.

Background
The TNO study was prompted by a court ruling in a case between a pilot and KLM, dating from 18 September 2013. The current study confirms that TCPs are only present in minimal concentrations in aircraft cockpits.

tno,tcp,klm,cockpit,boeing,737,reports
