KLM Delftware Miniature No. 104 is located in Valkenburg aan de Geul

The latest addition to the collection was presented to local mayor Daan Prevoo by KLM President & CEO Marjan Rintel at a reception held in front of the station building, attended by several hundred guests.

Beautiful, romantic setting
The castle-like station building was designed by architect Jacob Enschedé in early English Gothic Revival style, with corner towers and battlements, which was in keeping with the preferred style of the sumptuous spas for which Valkenburg is famous. The station was taken into operation almost 170 years ago, on 23 October 1853, as a stop on the first international rail link between Maastricht and Aachen. Fully restored in 2005, the station has continued to fulfil an important infrastructural role for the town of Valkenburg aan de Geul, which attracts tourists from all over the Netherlands and beyond.

Top three favourite stations in the Netherlands
According to a station experience monitor run by NS Dutch Railways and ProRail, Valkenburg Station is among the top three favourites in the Netherlands, based on scores given by passengers last year. KLM chose to add the station to its collection partly to celebrate the important role that railways have always played in the accessibility of the Netherlands. KLM is striving to make broader use of air-rail options.

The station is part of the building's collection of NS Dutch Railways and ProRail, consisting of 50 stations that each have their own unique architectural character, which is worth retaining and making accessible to the public.

Third Delftware miniature house in Limburg
The station in Valkenburg aan de Geul is the third building in the province of Limburg that KLM has added to its collection of Delftware miniatures. Presented in 2001, Miniature No. 82 is a replica of Huys op de Jeker located at No. 5 Bonnefantenstraat in Maastricht, while No. 84, presented in 2003, is a replica of De Oude Munt Tavern located at No. 7 Muntpromenade in Weert.

About KLM’s Delftware miniatures
Since the 1950s, KLM has presented Delftware miniature houses filled with Bols Jenever to its World Business Class passengers on intercontinental flights. These replicas of classic Dutch houses with a special history are prized collector’s items. Since 1994, the house numbers have kept pace with KLM’s age, with a new miniature being added to the collection every year to mark KLM’s anniversary on 7 October.

KLM’s 98th Delftware miniature depicts Anthony Fokker’s family home

The 98^th miniature house was presented at a festive event held in the St. Bavo Church in Haarlem. KLM President & CEO Pieter Elbers officially presented the first copy of the new miniature to Jos Wienen, the Mayor of Haarlem.

Anthony Fokker – aviation pioneer
The Fokker Family’s house in Haarlem was located on the Kleine Houtweg (then No. 41, now No. 65). The house is thought to date from 1791. The KLM replica is based on the current house located at Kleine Houtweg No. 65, which was the childhood home of aviation pioneer and aircraft manufacturer Anthony Fokker. His domain was the attic at the front of the house, on the second floor, which offered a view of the park. During the 1920s, Anthony Fokker became one of the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers, with factories in the Netherlands as well as the United States.

Farewell to KLM’s Fokker fleet
KLM will take leave of its last Fokker aircraft at the end of October 2017. The departure of the last Fokker 70 marks the end of Dutch-made aircraft in the KLM fleet, as well as the end of a historical 97-year partnership between KLM and Fokker.

History of the KLM miniature

The past
In 1966, two air lines were established: the Northern Line from Amsterdam to Groningen via Enschede, and the Southern Line from Amsterdam to Maastricht via Rotterdam and Eindhoven. The fleet consisted of two Fokker F27 Friendships that were rented from the Royal Netherlands Air Force and first had to be converted for civilian use. The NLM started out with a staff of 22.

In 1991, the airline’s name was changed to KLM Cityhopper, following a merger between NLM Cityhopper and NetherLines (established in 1984). In 1997, Air UK was also incorporated into the airline, bringing with it a fleet consisting primarily of Fokker 100s and 50s – a major expansion.

Today
Today, KLM Cityhopper operates around 300 flights a day, which amounts to around 100,000 flights a year, carrying more than 7 million passengers. The KLM Cityhopper fleet currently consists of 30 Embraer 190s, 3 Embraer 175s and 13 Fokker 70’s.

In 2017, KLM Cityhopper will bid farewell to its last Fokker 70. The airline welcomed its first two Embraer 190s in December 2008, and took delivery of its third Embraer 175 in August this year. By early 2018, the KLM Cityhopper fleet will consist of 30 Embraer 190s and 17 Embraer 175s. These new arrivals are not only more economical, but also produce fewer emissions.

In 2015, an international panel chose KLM Cityhopper as “Regional Airline of the Year”.

KLM recently announced its latest European destination: Dublin. KLM will begin serving the Irish capital at the start of the new winter schedule on 30 October, with KLM Cityhopper operating two daily flights.

KLM Celebrates 95th Anniversary on 7 October

Unveiling of “KLM 95 Years” logo
On 7 October, KLM’s anniversary, Camiel Eurlings will unveil the “KLM 95 Years” logo on an MD-11 aircraft. From this day on, for the duration of KLM’s anniversary, one aircraft of each type in the intercontinental fleet (Boeing 777-300/200, 747-400, 747 Combi, and Airbus 330-200/300) will display the “KLM 95 Years” logo on its fuselage.

First stone of KLM’s new lounge at Schiphol
Also on 7 October, a special guest will join Camiel Eurlings and Jos Nijhuis, CEO of the Schiphol Group, in laying the first stone of the new KLM World Business Class Lounge for intercontinental passengers at Schiphol.

By developing this new lounge, KLM fulfils the wishes of its passengers, who want comfort, rest, relaxation and entertainment. These requirements will be met in separate areas, each with their own unique atmosphere and furnishings, reflecting KLM’s “Journey of Inspiration” concept. Dutch Design is a key element of the lounge’s look and feel. The new design was developed in cooperation with the Amsterdam architectural agency Concrete, which also designed the W Hotel in London, the Citizen M Hotels, and the Supper Clubs. The new lounge will open in 2016.

Presentation of KLM’s 95^th Delftware miniature
