The agreement includes commitment to purchase Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which has the potential to reduce up to 80 percent of CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuel, across the lifecycle, when used on a large scale. Building on KLM’s Corporate BioFuel Program, Microsoft will purchase an amount of SAF equivalent to all flights taken by Microsoft employees between the USA and Netherlands (and vice versa) on KLM and Delta Airlines.

In addition, Microsoft and KLM intend to explore areas of cooperation that would further improve sustainability and reduce emissions associated with air travel. Our joint aim is to provide a blueprint that will engage other corporations to stimulate the demand for sustainable air travel solutions, and achieve ambitions to address their carbon footprint within their own supply chain.

This means KLM not only purchases sustainable biojet fuel for the route, it also compensates the total remaining carbon dioxide emissions of all flights through KLM's CO2ZERO service.

]]>Biojet fuel on the Växjö route
KLM has been using sustainable biojet fuel since 2009 and uses it in part for all flights from Los Angeles because it is the only place with a refinery. To make flights to Växjö as sustainable as possible, KLM is investing in 120,000 litres of biojet fuel per year to the new Swedish destination. KLM guarantees that it will purchase 5% biojet fuel based on all flights to and from Växjö. By expanding the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme in Sweden, local companies will be able to invest in sustainable biojet fuel.

Sustainable biojet fuel contributes significantly to making aviation more sustainable, but is still two to three times more expensive than fossil fuel. Södra, Sweden’s largest cooperative of forest owners, based in Växjö, will be the first non-Dutch partner in the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme. Together with Södra and the City of Växjö, KLM and SkyNRG will also investigate the feasibility of producing biojet fuel in the region around Växjö.

CO2 compensation on the Växjö route
As it is not yet possible to fly entirely on sustainable biojet fuel, KLM and Växjö Småland Airport are joining forces to pay jointly for the total CO2 compensation for flights to and from Växjö. The money will go to the reforestation initiative CO2OL Tropical Mix in Panama, a ‘Gold Standard for the Global Goals’ project. The project converts degraded meadows into mixed forests by planting a mix of native tree species and some exotic species. In addition, the project’s activities create long-term employment thereby providing a sustainable source of income for the local population.

Over the coming months, they will research the possibilities of flying from San Jose using bio-based jet fuel. Right now, sustainable aviation fuel is the most effective way to reduce CO2 emissions and, in so doing, to make civil aviation more sustainable. On 31 October, KLM and the Costa Rican government signed a letter of intent to ratify the cooperation. This is the first time in the world that an airline has entered into an agreement of this kind with a country.

]]>In the months to come, KLM will share its knowledge and expertise with the Costa Rican government in close cooperation with its partner SkyNRG. In 2009, KLM operated its first flight using biofuel, with observers on board. In 2010, KLM became the world’s first airline to operate a commercial flight using sustainable biofuel. But, soon after in 2010, the first commercial flight followed. KLM has operated more than a thousand flights using bio-based jet fuel to such places as Paris, Rio de Janeiro and from New York, and Oslo.

80% less CO2 emissions

KLM founded SkyNRG and initiated the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme to stimulate the demand for sustainable biofuel. With the help of this cooperative effort, KLM has been operating all of its flights from Los Angeles partially with sustainable biofuel since 2012. KLM is the only European airline operating intercontinental flights using biofuel.

By using sustainable biofuel, KLM can reduce its CO2 emissions by as much as 80% compared to fossil fuels. The market for sustainable biofuel, however, is far from mature, so the price is still three times higher than that of fossil fuel. KLM only purchases biofuels made from raw materials that have no negative environmental impact on biodiversity or food production. KLM is currently using sustainable biofuel made from used cooking oil (UCO).

Through the Corporate BioFuel Programme, the Dutch airline hopes to promote the market for sustainable biofuel in the ultimate aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. 

]]>Three times the price
By participating in the Corporate BioFuel Programme (CBP) the university wants to contribute actively to the introduction of more environmentally friendly jet fuel. By participating in the Programme, the university can reduce CO2 emissions among its staff’s business travel by about 10% per flight. KLM will use the investment by participants in the CBP to bridge the price difference between standard fuel and sustainable biofuel. Right now, biofuel is three times as expensive as traditional jet fuel.

Using sustainable biofuel in large quantities can result in an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions in the airline industry. For this reason, there is a worldwide need for technological development and further research into sustainable raw materials. Right now, the production, and the market, for sustainable biofuel is extremely limited. KLM has been working to develop the market for biofuel since 2011 and is stimulating more companies in the airline industry to follow its example.

Reducing CO2 emissions
KLM is aiming to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 20% in 2020 (compared to 2010). In addition to introducing biofuel, it is also employing a fleet renewal programme and more efficient flight operations to achieve its goal. Other partners in the Corporate BioFuel Programme include ABN AMRO, Accenture, FrieslandCampina, the City of Amsterdam, Loyens & Loeff, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, PGGM, and the Schiphol Group.

KLM only purchases biofuels made from raw materials that have no negative environmental impact on biodiversity or food production. Sustainable biofuels are purchased through SkyNRG and are tested by the SkyNRG Sustainability Board. SkyNRG is certified by the Roundtable of Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB).

Collaboration between KLM and Delft University
In March, KLM and the Delft University of Technology signed a cooperative agreement under the name of Design Doing at Royal Dutch Airlines. The aim of this particular effort is to develop new products and to optimise existing KLM processes in a live operational KLM environment – that is, involving real passengers at a real airport in real aircraft. In this way, KLM will show its deep dedication to applying Design Thinking.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment Sharon Dijksma announced the move at the National Climate Summit in Rotterdam. By participating in the programme, the Ministry is enabling its employees to travel on flights using biofuel whenever possible.

]]>As a result, the Ministry will be able to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions from air travel by about 50%. Renewable biofuel contributes significantly to making air travel more sustainable.

Why the programme is so important
As a result of low production capacity, the availability of renewable raw materials, and the mandatory delivery of biofuels for road transport, there is no stable production of biofuel for the airline industry in Europe. KLM believes that medium- and long-term production of biofuel is extremely important if the airline industry is to achieve its carbon dioxide reduction goals. The Dutch government’s participation in the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme emphasises its importance. If biofuel could be made widely available, it could reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80%.

 

About the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme
The KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme enables companies to do some of their air travel using renewable biofuel. Participants pay a fee to bridge the difference between the price of traditional fossil fuel and sustainable biofuel. KLM uses that fee to purchase renewable biofuel.

Together with the CBP’s partners, KLM is stimulating the development of a market for sustainable biofuels which, in turn, will create ongoing production so that the price for biofuels drops to an acceptable level. KLM only purchases biofuels made from raw materials that have no negative environmental impact on biodiversity or food production. This means that KLM will purchase sustainable biofuel for all its flights at this airport for a period of three years. The biofuel will be produced by the local biofuel refinery AltAir Fuels and supplied by SkyNRG. Los Angeles is the world’s second airport that has incorporated biofuel into its regular refuelling process. The airport in Oslo, Norway, was first to do so in March this year. KLM was also involved in that initiative.

Biofuel – how does it work?
The biofuel is pumped directly into the airport fuel reservoirs, which also hold the airport’s conventional kerosene supply. This implies it is delivered into all aircrafts that are refuelled in Los Angeles. In this way, biofuel contributes to reducing CO2 emissions from all flights taking off from Los Angeles.

Reducing CO2 emissions
Together with its partners in the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme, KLM buys sustainable biofuel in Los Angeles and can therefore assign the reduction in CO2 emissions to all KLM flights departing from this airport. These biofuel flights contribute to KLM’s ambition to achieve a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions per passenger by 2020 (compared to 2011).

Biofuel producer and supplier
SkyNRG supplies the sustainable biofuel, which is made from used cooking oil by AltAir Fuels in Los Angeles. AltAir Fuels is the first and only refinery in the world that continuously produces biofuel for aviation, making it the first that supplies biofuel to the airline industry on a commercial basis.

KLM and sustainable biofuel
KLM is a pioneer in the use of sustainable biofuel and has earned the status of “best in class” in terms of fuel efficiency. In 2011, KLM operated its first commercial flight using biofuel. Since that flight to Paris, numerous KLM flights using sustainable biofuel have been operated by various KLM aircraft types.

The remaining flights will be operated over the forthcoming period of five to six weeks, marking yet another step in the right direction towards making aviation more sustainable. What’s more, Embraer will be conducting measurements during these flights to gauge the efficiency of biofuel in comparison with kerosene.

]]>The flights will depart from Oslo Airport (Avinor), the first airport to supply biofuel directly from its hydrant system since January this year. In addition to biofuel supplied from the hydrant system, biofuel will also be delivered by separate fuel trucks for the series of flights operated by KLM Cityhopper. Biofuel has to be supplied by fuel trucks for these flights in order to measure the efficiency of biofuel in comparison with kerosene during the Embraer flights.

The biofuel for this series of flights is produced from 100% RSB (Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials) certified camelina oil and in full compliance with the EU RED standard. The biofuel is produced within the ITAKA (Initiative Towards SustAinable Kerosene for Aviation) project and supplied by Air BP and SkyNRG. The ITAKA consortium was founded by leading companies operating in the airline and fuel industries. Together, they are working on producing and testing sustainable biofuel in the airline industry. In achieving this goal, they receive financial support from the European Commission.

The biofuel flights are partly funded by the partners in the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme: ABN AMRO, Accenture, CBRE Global Investors, FMO, FrieslandCampina, City of Amsterdam, Heineken, Loyens & Loeff, PGGM, Perfetti Van Melle and the Schiphol Group.

KLM’s aim is to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% per passenger in 2020 (compared to 2011 levels) through fleet renewal, using sustainable biofuel and increasing flight efficiency. Because affordable sustainable biofuel is not always available, KLM also aims to stimulate the market for sustainable biofuel. KLM is “best in class” when it comes to fuel efficiency and leads the field with respect to using sustainable biofuel.

KLM’s recent inclusion of the E175 from Embraer in its fleet ties in with the airline’s aim to further reduce CO2 emissions. This aircraft type is significantly more fuel-efficient in comparison with the current Fokker 70 equipment, and is therefore more environmentally friendly. Using 18% less fuel, it also generates an 18% reduction in CO2 emissions.

The biofuel forms part of an ITAKA* project, providing sustainable fuel for worldwide’s first biojet supply via hydrant system at Oslo Airport. The biojet supply is funded by the European Commission and facilitated by SkyNRG.

With effect from today, biofuel will for the first time be available via hydrant instead of the usual refuelling truck and will use the existing infrastructure at Oslo airport. This is the result of cooperation between Air BP and Avinor, the Norwegian airport operator at Oslo Airport Gardermoen.

]]>In addition to using biofuel from the hydrant system, some of the biofuel for KLM will be delivered by refuelling trucks. In cooperation with Embraer, biofuel efficiency will be assessed in comparison with kerosene. KLM previously conducted similar tests in cooperation with Boeing and Airbus.

Consequently, the participating corporations reduce CO2 emissions resulting from their business travel, but also contribute to the further development of the biofuel market.
 

* ITAKA: Initiative Towards SustAinable Kerosene for Aviation. ITAKA, a consortium of leading aerospace and fuel companies, was established to produce sustainable biofuel for use in aviation. ITAKA is a cooperative project funded by the European Commission. This is the result of a joint effort and expanded cooperation between KLM, Schiphol Group, Delta Air Lines, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and by contributions of KLM’s partners in the Corporate BioFuel Program. Cooperation is a priority for the future of sustainable biofuel in the aviation industry. By this initiative KLM demonstrates that sustainable biofuel in the airline industry is here to stay.

In addition to the participation in KLM’s BioFuel program, Schiphol Group has invested in the KLM flights using sustainable biofuel. The series of biofuel flights - from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport - will start on 8 March with a flight from Schiphol to JFK. The sustainable fuel is obtained from used cooking oil.

In June 2012, KLM’s longest biofuel flight ever travelled from Amsterdam to Rio de Janeiro. The flights to New York are the next step and proofs KLM’s pioneering role in the development of sustainable biofuel.

New Biofuel Partners
KLM has been working with the World Wide Fund for Nature the Netherlands (WWF-NL) since 2007. The cooperation aims to stimulate a more sustainable airline industry by reducing CO2 emissions, increasing fuel efficiency, and investing in innovations such as sustainable biofuel.

Last year KLM launched the world’s first biofuel proposition for contracted corporate accounts. This will allow them to fly on sustainable biofuel for a portion of their total flight volume, or on specific routes, thereby stimulating the further development of biofuels and reducing the aviation industry’s carbon footprint. The number of partners in the programme has more than doubled to fifteen. Since this year it includes the City of Amsterdam, Loyens & Loeff, PGGM, FMO, Delta Air Lines, Siemens, TomTom and CBRE Global Investors. They follow initial customers such as Ahold, Accenture, DSM, Heineken, Nike, Philips and Schiphol Group who have been supporting KLM’s BioFuel programme since June of 2012.

Sustainable Biofuel
KLM’s biofuel is supplied by SkyNRG, a company which KLM founded 2009 together with ARGOS (North Sea Petroleum) and Spring Associates. SkyNRG is now the world’s market leader for sustainable kerosene, supplying more than fifteen carriers worldwide and the operating partner in the KLM’s BioFuel program. For the JFK International Airport to Schiphol Amsterdam Airport route, SkyNRG is supported by its longstanding US Partner EPIC Aviation LLC to distribute the fuel.

For KLM biofuel is only an option if it does not have a negative impact on biodiversity, local development and/or the local food supply. As of March 2013, SkyNRG is the first fully certified renewable jet fuel supply chain by RSB (Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels).

Sustainable biofuel
The fuel KLM uses is supplied by SkyNRG, the company KLM founded in 2009 with North Sea Group and Spring Associates. SkyNRG is now the world’s market leader for sustainable kerosene, supplying more than 15 carriers worldwide.

KLM is open to using different kinds of raw materials for the end product, as long as they meet a range of sustainability criteria, including a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions, and minimal negative impact on biodiversity and food supply. Likewise, all biofuels used by KLM meet the same technical specifications as traditional kerosene – no adjustments need to be made to aircraft engines or the infrastructure.

For seven consecutive years, KLM together with Air France has been sector leader of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.

]]>The purpose of this series of flights is to demonstrate that it is possible to mix sustainable biofuel on a serie of scheduled flights. Herewith, KLM wants to stimulate the developments in the field of sustainable airtraffic. This is done in collaboration with the WWF. KLM believes that only a sustainable alternative to current fossil kerosene actually leads to reduction of CO2 emissions in the medium term.  For this purpose,  since late 2007 KLM is doing research for sustainably produced biofuels * and hopes that more parties will follow its example in order to decrease the price of biofuel.

The four daily flights are operated on fuel mixed with some biofuel. The biofuel is made from discarded frying oil and developed and delivered by SkyNRG, from which KLM is co-initiator. Already 7 years in a row AIR FRANCE KLM is sector leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.


 
* A biofuel is considered durable when its cultivation is not at the expense of food production, biodiversity and does not lead to deforestation, overuse of water and pesticides. In addition, there are also various social criteria.

All biofuels used by KLM also have to meet precisely the same technical specifications as traditional kerosene and must not require any adjustments to aircraft engines or infrastructure. 

The fuel is produced by Dynamic Fuels and supplied by SkyNRG, the consortium launched by KLM and North Sea Group and Spring Associates in 2009. SkyNRG is actively developing a sustainable production chain for aviation biofuels. The sustainability of alternative kerosene depends on many factors and is assessed on a case-by-case basis. In order to be able in future to reach the right decisions in this area, SkyNRG is advised by an independent Sustainability Board, consisting of the Dutch wing of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Solidaridad, and the Copernicus Institute of the University of Utrecht. A positive recommendation from the Sustainability Board carries a lot of weight for KLM. 

KLM also supports the view published in the WWF’s Energy Report which indicates that alternative fuels made from biomass are the only appropriate replacement for fossil fuels for such sectors as the airline industry. Eurlings: “The route to 100% sustainable energy is enormously challenging. The costs of biofuels need to come down substantially and permanently. This can be achieved through innovation, collaboration and the right legislation that stimulates biofuel in the airline industry, but with an eye on honest competition. We really need to move forward together to attain continuous access to sustainable fuel”. 

KLM has been committed to developing sustainable biofuel since 2007. Air France KLM is also an industry leader in the field of fuel efficiency. Air France KLM has been sector leader of de Dow Jones Sustainability Index for six successive years.
