This augmented-reality (AR) travel channel – the first of its kind – is designed to get passengers in the mood for their trip.

]]>Using the Facebook camera on their smartphone, passengers waiting at the airport have easy access to this new addition to KLM’s AR services on social media. With the camera on the back, passengers can explore various travel landscapes, following animated characters dancing to music. With the camera on the front, passengers can apply all sorts of entertaining face filters, allowing them to interact with images, music and sound effects activated by their own movements.

KLM at the forefront of AR applications

This AR technology presents a world of opportunity that KLM is putting to good use for its passengers. Having recently launched the AR hand baggage check in the KLM app and in KLM Messenger, “Tune into Your Travel” is the latest addition to KLM’s range of AR services.

Head over to KLM in Messenger to get in the mood for your trip. You’ll find “Tune into your Travel” in the menu under “Fun Stuff”.

]]>From now on, the service is widely available for iPhone users (6s or above) in KLM’s Messenger. KLM’s AR hand baggage check uses a transparent, virtual KLM suitcase that is placed in reality on an actual suitcase to indicate whether the dimensions are appropriate for overhead compartments. This makes it easy for passengers to check, in the comfort of their home, whether their hand baggage is of the correct size. Earlier this month, the service was launched in the KLM App (iOS).

AR technology next step on Messenger

Earlier this year, Messenger announced that it would make AR technology available in closed beta on its platform. KLM is now one of the few companies worldwide to build an experience using AR in Messenger. KLM will continue to develop and improve the service in the future, so that it grows in line with the latest AR technology available.

]]>KLM App downloaded millions of times

The KLM App has already been downloaded millions of times and has more than 100,000 active users each day. No fewer than 70% of the app users are logged in permanently and use the KLM app several times a month. The app’s features are designed to enhance overall comfort before, during and after the trip.

The AR hand baggage check has been added to the existing functionalities of the KLM App, including up-to-date flight information, booking a flight, checking in online, downloading boarding passes or reserving specific seats. The app was also recently launched in the Airport Map, a digital map of no less than 24 different airports enabling passengers to find their way around quickly. With “Milestones”, passengers can use the KLM App to find out all sorts of useful information and tips with respect to their personal KLM flight history. Should a flight from Schiphol be significantly delayed, users also have the option of activating a digital snack or meal voucher. What’s more, the app even makes it possible for you to rebook your flight yourself.

This handy new service follows on from other successful KLM AR initiatives, such as the 360-degree display of a Dreamliner aircraft in the KLM App. The KLM Houses App has also gone live with a new AR application. Using iOS11, it is now possible to experience the story of Anthony Fokker’s House 98 through Augmented Reality! Click on the blue aircraft icon and fly along “in reality” with different Fokker model aircraft.
