Transavia Netherlands saw a decline in growth compared to the same month last year. A decrease in passenger kilometre traffic and a decrease in capacity resulted in a slightly lower load factor. KLM Cargo’s load factor increased by 1.9%^pts with slightly lower traffic and decreased capacity.

Freight carried by KLM Cargo decreased by 2.6% in April 2016. The decrease, combined with an increase in available capacity, resulted in a 1.8% drop in cargo load factor.

Traffic highlights

• 6.5 million passengers, down 2.0%
• Increased pressure on unit revenue in the month of April including Easter calendar effect. Unit revenue per available seat kilometer (RASK) ex-currency down compared to April 2014, reflecting the expected capacity/demand balances in the different regions, in line with the expected outlook for the year: almost all of the expected savings on the fuel bill could be offset by unit revenue pressure and negative currency impacts

Recent Developments

• On April 10th, following a very high level of interest, Air France-KLM has increased the size of the perpetual subordinated bond issue realized on 26 March, raising an additional 200 million euros at a yield of 5.5%.
• On April 29th, Air France-KLM and Air France signed a 1.1 billion euro revolving credit facility with 13 international banks, finalizing the early refinancing of the credit facility which was due to mature in April 2016.

• On the Americas network traffic rose by 3.2% for capacity up by 4.3% (opening of Minneapolis in the United States and Montevideo in Uruguay as well as strong increase in capacity to Rio de Janeiro), leading to a one point decline in load factor to 87.0%.
• The Asia network also saw significant capacity development with routes to Fukuoka (Japan) and Kuala-Lumpur (Malaysia) as well as added capacity to China. Overall capacity therefore increased by 8.8%, a rise which was almost matched by traffic (+8.2%).  The load factor stood at 84.9% (-0.4 points).
• On the Africa and Middle East network, traffic declined by 0.9% for capacity up by 2.0%. The load factor gave up 2.3 points to 78.3%. 
• The Caribbean and Indian Ocean network recorded a 6.8% decline in capacity. Traffic was down by 5.7%, leading to a one point rise in load factor to 84.7%.
• The European network saw traffic up by 0.8% for capacity up by 0.5%. The load factor stood at 76.4%, up by 0.3 points. 

Cargo
In April 2013 the decline in cargo traffic was inferior to the reduction in capacity (-4.6% and -5.0% respectively).  The load factor gained 0.3 points to 64.4%. Unit revenue per available tonne kilometre (RATK) ex-currency was down versus April 2012.

Recent developments
 Air France-KLM and Etihad reinforced their code sharing agreements for the Summer 2013 season on flights to Australia for the group, and certain European destinations for Etihad.

Air France became the first airline to launch a digital press service via iPad, giving passengers access to free downloads of a selection of newspapers and magazines.

Activity during the month saw three phases. Up until the ash crisis, traffic continued the positive trend of the previous month, with a 1.1% rise for capacity down by 1,4%. Unit revenue per available seat kilometer (RASK) excluding currency was strongly up on a year earlier. Traffic collapsed during the seven days of the crisis. Once flights resumed, the recovery was gradual due to the number of cancelled journeys during the crisis. Traffic therefore fell 15.9% for the month as a whole, while capacity was down by 15.3%. The load factor declined by 0.6 points. Total passengers amounted to 5.0 million (-20.3%). However, despite this significant disruption, RASK excluding currency impact was up on last year. Forward bookings for the next few weeks are showing a positive trend.

On the Americas network traffic fell 15.9% with capacity down by 15.5%. The load factor declined by 0.4 points to 85.0%.
Traffic on the Asia network declined by 13.0% with capacity down 10.3%. The load factor gave up 2.6 points to 83.5%.
The Africa and Middle East network was similarly affected with a 14.2% drop in traffic, while capacity was down by 15.7%. The load factor gained 1.3 points to 80.1%.
On the Caribbean and Indian Ocean network, traffic declined by 10.2% with capacity down by 8.2%. The load factor dropped 1.7 points to 78.9%.
The European network was the longest affected by the airspace shut down, and saw traffic drop by 23.5% for capacity down 22.8%. The load factor stood at 69.7%, down 0.6 points.

Cargo business

The shut down of European airspace led to a 14.7% reduction in capacity. However, cargo was relatively lightly affected because the majority of goods were able to be stocked until flights resumed. Moreover cargo flights resumed earlier than passenger flights. Traffic therefore declined by just 2.0%, while the load factor gained 9.1 points to 70.5%. Unit revenue per available ton kilometer (RATK) was up strongly compared with April 2009.
