This – the tenth E175+ – brings the total number of Embraers to forty. PH-EXP will make its first commercial journey on 28 July.

]]>This is another important step in KLM Cityhopper’s fleet renewal programme. This year, KLC will phase out its last Fokker 70 so that the fleet will consist entirely of Embraer aircraft. In June, KLC announced that it had ordered two more Embraer 190s. The next Embraer 175+ is expected to arrive in November of this year. In Europe, KLC is the operator with the largest Embraer fleet.

More environmentally friendly
The Embraer 175+ has a large number of technical features that significantly reduce fuel consumption and, with it, CO2 emissions compared to the Fokker 70. By comparison, the new aircraft consumes up to 22% less fuel.

The EIB and KLM N.V. are in contract negotiations for the financing of the KLM Cityhopper regional fleet renewal programme, which are expected to close in the coming weeks. An initial tranche of the financing would be arranged through Crédit Agricole.

]]>The fleet renewal programme of KLM Cityhopper covers the replacement of the Fokker 70 with Embraer 175/190s. These Embraer 175/190s are considerably more fuel efficient compared to the Fokker 70, thereby making them more environmentally friendly. The new aircraft will support KLM Cityhopper in operating internal EU regional services as cost and environmentally efficient as possible while contributing to improved accessibility to Europe’s regions.

 

The transaction for the first three aircraft is scheduled to be closed in the coming weeks.

The well-known KLM Blue is being combined with orange highlights. The transition between the two colours features aspects of the Dutch flag. The combination emphasises KLM’s Dutch roots and pride in the national colour of the Netherlands.

]]>The introduction of the special aircraft was partly prompted by a social media post KLM published on King’s Day 2015. At the time, KLM’s followers were presented with a picture of an orange aircraft, along with the question: “Should we colour orange next year on King’s Day? #OrangeExperience”. 30,000 likes and 2,500 positive responses later, KLM rolls out its only orange aircraft today.

KLM will deploy the orange Boeing 777 on routine flights within the network and, whenever possible, during events that offer opportunities to promote the Netherlands. The aircraft will debut this summer and will be in operation on the Rio de Janeiro-Amsterdam route during the Olympic Games. On 22 August, KLM will use its orange Boeing to operate the “Medal Flight” that brings the Dutch Olympic heroes home.

Painting procedure
335 litres of paint were used to spray the aircraft orange fading into KLM’s distinctive blue. Applying the colours in multiple, thin layers, requires less paint and the sustainable, chromate-free paint can be easily washed off. The colours of the Dutch flag have been incorporated in the transition between orange and blue, completing the aircraft’s Dutch image. It took a team of 35 people four days to spray on the orange livery.

More about the KLM Boeing 777-300
The KLM version of the Boeing 777-300 has a completely revamped interior, with full-flat seats in World Business Class and more legroom in Economy Class, ensuring greater comfort for passengers. In addition, the inflight entertainment system has been fully renewed and adapted throughout the cabin. By the end of this year, KLM will have replaced more than 80% of its intercontinental aircraft cabin interiors.

]]>Under the control of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), this working group aims to provide long-term standardized solutions among governments for the monitoring in real time of the flight paths of commercial passenger and cargo aircraft.

Air France-KLM is currently leader in the field of reporting its aircraft position in flight, thanks to the development of several initiatives in this field. Since 2009, Air France has implemented a particularly efficient aircraft traceability system.

The exact position of the aircraft is transmitted every ten minutes to the Air France Operations Control Centre (20 minutes on average in the airline industry). In the event of an abnormal deviation from the originally intended flight path, the automatic reporting interval of the position is reduced from ten minutes to one minute. KLM has just decided to make changes to its automatic position reporting system in the same way as Air France.

Furthermore, as recommended by the French Air Accident Investigations Bureau (BEA) for the Safety of Civil Aviation, the Air France fleet is now equipped with ULB-type (underwater locator beacon) flight recorders (more commonly known as “black boxes”) with 90 days autonomy (instead of 30 days as stipulated in the regulations) during which the aircraft can be located at any time anywhere in the world in case of immersion.

The Group is also exploring the possibility of equipping its aircraft with an even more suitable transmitter, which would emit at a more easily identifiable frequency when immersed.

Finally, Air France-KLM is showing interest for a proposal by the telecommunications company INMARSAT which is currently under study. This envisages the possibility of ensuring more frequently (every fifteen minutes) correct communications between the aircraft and the company’s satellite communications network.
