<pp:quotetext>KLM’s revenues increased by 1.7%, rising to over EUR 11 billion in 2019, a new record. The KLM Group also broke a second record in its centenary year, carrying more than 44 million passengers, with KLM welcoming 35 million and Transavia 9 million.

KLM’s operating income amounted to EUR 853 million, with a margin of 7.7%. Owing to higher fuel costs and a challenging cargo market, this result was lower than that achieved in 2018.

Thanks to our good operating results, we were able to invest more than EUR 1.3 billion in customers, staff, fleet, digitisation, lounges and other facilities in 2019, as was the case in 2018. We also further reduced our net debt and strengthened our equity capital position. Customer satisfaction was high once more, with an average Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 41 for the year. We are proud of and deeply grateful for the loyalty of our customers.

Our results reflect our investment in innovation and sustainability, as well as the hard work of all KLM staff. For this I thank all KLM colleagues whole-heartedly!

There is uncertainty about growth outlook at Schiphol, declining results compared to 2018 and the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak, confirming once more how sensitive our industry is to geopolitical and other factors beyond our control. We must therefore continue to focus on our costs, our agility in making changes and the improvement of our margins, so that we can pursue our ambitious investment programme for the benefit of our customers and the future of our company.</pp:quotetext>

<pp:quotetext>KLM’s operating income for the third quarter of 2019 amounts to € 512 million. In absolute terms, this is a good result for our important third quarter thanks to all the hard work put in by many KLM employees during the busy summer months. However, it does represent a decrease of € 61 million in comparison with Q3 last year, due to higher costs – especially those related to fuel – and lower revenues per seat. Other factors contributing towards lower Q3 earnings include significantly reduced earnings and load factor for KLM Cargo.
Against a backdrop of rising costs and increasing pressure on revenues across the entire KLM Group, focusing on costs remains a top priority. This is vital in order to continue investing in the quality of our product, our people and our sustainability objectives.</pp:quotetext>

<pp:quotetext>Similar to the first quarter of this year, KLM’s results in the second quarter were affected by a combination of higher fuel costs, pressure on revenues per unit, a decrease in cargo transport, and higher operating costs. In the second quarter, we achieved an operating result of EUR 258 million (compared to EUR 336 million last year). The operating result for the first half of 2019 dropped almost by half, from EUR 388 million to EUR 202 million. The lack of room for growth in the Netherlands and a variety of operational disruptions, at Schiphol and in the airspace, had a further negative effect on results. This is a significant break with the positive developments in the results of recent years. So it is all the more important that we continue our successful course of cost savings paired with investment. This way, we will remain healthy and fit for our customers and employees, even on our one hundredth anniversary.</pp:quotetext>

Harm Kreulen, Managing Director KLM The Netherlands, was proud to make this announcement on the occasion of the Golf Awards ceremony on Thursday evening in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. This means that KLM will continue to serve as the title sponsor of the biggest multi-day sports event in the Netherlands in 2019 and 2020. The KLM Open is widely recognised as the oldest tournament of the European Tour. The extension also means that at least three KLM Open editions remain on the cards. KLM has served as the title sponsor of the tournament since 2004.

The tournament provides a valuable platform to achieve the envisaged level of ‘KLM exposure’ and presents a great opportunity for us to welcome a large number of business relations. The year 2019 promises to be an exceptional one, especially since KLM will be celebrating its 100th anniversary and the Dutch Open will be held for the 100th time. These are unique, remarkable milestones that matter,” says Harm Kreulen.

KLM Open Tournament Director Daan Slooter: “The partnership between the Dutch Open and KLM is one of the longest-standing cooperative relationships in the history of Dutch sport and the European Tour.
