That is a 4.5% increase compared to 2017. The growth was greatest in Europe and in North and South America. The strong passenger growth resulted in a record load factor of 89.1% for the entire year, which is 0.7%pt higher than in 2017. At KLM Cargo, the load factor increased by 1.4% to 67%.

The slight drop in passenger numbers at Transavia was the result of the closure of the Munich base. Transavia Netherlands welcomed 5.2% more passengers than in 2017.

KLM will continue to focus on emerging markets in South America where, after a successful start in the summer season of 2018, we will continue to fly to Fortaleza. This third direct connection to a Brazilian destination strengthens our position as a major European airline in the Brazilian market, where we serve business and leisure passengers and cargo customers. We continue to watch the North Atlantic market with a keen interest and are increasing flights to the Canadian cities of Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto.

From January 2019, KLM’s entire intercontinental fleet will be fitted with our full-flat seats in World Business Class. We will also continue to invest in our passengers’ comfort. Starting this winter season, we are introducing a number of lovely new products, including Douwe Egberts coffee and Rituals spa and cosmetic products.

The total number of passengers carried increased by 1.9% to more than 3 million. This growth was mainly achieved in Europe and North, Central and South America. Network-wide capacity growth was restricted to 1.8% in August, while traffic was up by 2.3% overall, lifting load factor just above 91.8%. 

]]>KLM Cargo achieved a load factor of 65.9% in August. Capacity remained virtually stable, but cargo traffic was up 4.1%. KLM Cargo transported at total of 53,131 tonnes of freight to and from Schiphol, which is 3,7% more than in August last year.  

Transavia’s passenger figures declined by 3.6% in August, with traffic decreasing faster than capacity, resulting in slightly lower load factor (93.9%) than in August last year.

KLM will be offering service to four new destinations throughout the 2018 summer season. The long-haul network will expand to include Fortaleza and Mumbai, where the latter will be a continuation of the 2017 winter schedule. And Nantes and Växjö will be included in the medium-haul network.

The new destinations will create more travel options for our passengers.
