The greatest rise was in Europe. The high passenger growth led to a record load factor of 88.4% over the year as a whole, which is 1.2% higher than in 2016.

]]>Transavia also achieved significant passenger growth in 2017 against a higher load.

At KLM Cargo, traffic fell by 0.6% over 2017, against a 0.2% decline in capacity. This caused the load factor to drop 0.3%pts. However, a positive trend has been seen in recent months and a degree of recovery in the cargo market.

This, the twelfth E175+ brings the total number of Embraers in the KLC fleet to forty-two, which includes thirty E190s. This is the last delivery of 2017. We are expecting the forty-third Embraer in January.

]]>The delivery is another important step in KLM Cityhopper’s fleet renewal programme. Now that KLM has said goodbye for all time to the Fokker 70, the KLC fleet consists entirely of Embraer aircraft. In Europe, KLC is the operator with the largest Embraer fleet. At the end of 2018, the KLC fleet will include no fewer than forty-nine aircraft built by the Brazilian manufacturer.

More environmentally friendly

The Embraer has a large number of technical features that significantly reduce fuel consumption and, with it, CO2 emissions. Compared to the Fokker 70, the new E175+ burns 22% less fuel.

In total, KLM (including Transavia) carried more than 8 million passengers in the two summer months. At Cargo, traffic declined by 2.8%, which was lower than the decline in capacity of 3.6%, resulting in a 0.5-point increase in load factor, as was the case last month.

With available capacity up by 6.7%, passenger load factor once again increased to a record high of 87.4%, representing a 2.6 percentage point increase compared to the same month last year.

]]>The greatest increase in passenger numbers was driven by the European market – in addition to Central and South America – where KLM and Transavia are consistently regaining market share.

KLM Cargo also shows favourable traffic figures. On the whole, traffic volumes rose by 1.3% in May against a capacity increase of 0.8%, generating a marginal cargo load factor increase of 0.4 percentage points.

This was further helped by the Spring Holiday. In April, KLM welcomed 10.2% more passengers year-on-year and achieved an increased load factor at a record 89.5%.

]]>Flights to South America and Africa showed the greatest growth. Thanks to the holiday period, European destinations – mostly notably Germany and Italy – also showed an increase in passenger numbers. Transavia is doing well and managed to profit from its added capacity in the Netherlands.

Freight carried by KLM Cargo decreased by 2.6% in April 2016. The decrease, combined with an increase in available capacity, resulted in a 1.8% drop in cargo load factor.

Starting this summer season:

  • By popular demand, KLM is increasing the number of flights to London City Airport from 12 to a maximum of 28 each week this summer.
  • Malaga is KLM’s sixth non-stop destination in Spain. The other five are Bilbao, Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Alicante.
  • Cagliari and Catania are the ninth and tenth non-stop destinations in Italy. The other eight are Rome, Florence, Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa, Turin, Venice, Genoa, and Bologna.
  • All Boeing aircraft operating on long-haul routes will be furnished with full-flat seats. The World Business Class cabins in all Airbus A330 aircraft are also scheduled for refit. Travellers can expect to see the new World Business Class completed in the course of 2018.
  • And, every three months until October 2018, our World Business Class passengers can enjoy new dishes created by leading Dutch chef Jonnie Boer.
  • World Business Class passengers can now choose from three different breakfasts – savoury, sweet, or delicious yogurt with granola.

KLM will also suspend direct service to Doha (Qatar) from 26 March 2017. This service has proven unprofitable since Qatar Airlines launched direct service to Schiphol in June 2015. Discontinuing service to Doha brings an end to KLM’s 33-year presence in Qatar. KLM’s flights to Dubai remain unchanged.

]]>The flights to Bahrain, now operated in combination with Doha, will be continued six times a week (currently five times a week). Bahrain is served after a short stopover in Kuwait and back.

KLM serves six destinations in the Gulf States from Schiphol: Dubai and Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), Muscat (Oman), Dammam (Saudi Arabia), Manama (Bahrain) and Kuwait City (Kuwait). Flights are also offered via Paris to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) and Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).

KLM Cityhopper is renewing its fleet, which will consist entirely of more economical Embraer 190s and 175s by the autumn of 2017.

]]>KLM Cityhopper is Europe’s largest regional carrier, operating approximately 100,000 flights a year out of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to 57 European destinations.

Fokker
KLM operated its last commercial flight with a Fokker 50 in 2010, and the last Fokker 100s were phased out in 2012.

The Fokker 70 was deployed by 15 airlines worldwide. KLM began flying Fokker 70s in 1996 and is the biggest user of this aircraft type. The average age of our Fokker 70s is almost 20 years, with each aircraft racking up around 38,000 flight hours and a similar number of take-offs and landings for the entire fleet. There are currently 14 Fokker 70s in the KLM fleet.

Embraer
KLM welcomed its first E190 aircraft as early as December 2008, and the first E175 arrived in April this year.

Once the Fokker 70s have been replaced with Embraers, KLM’s fleet will consist of 30 E190s and one E175. A further 16 E175s will join the fleet through 2018, giving KLM the largest Embraer fleet in Europe.
